3 Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron Commander Commander s Report Cdr Marge Maciag, SN Another Watch Year has begun and it s time to welcome our new Bridge Officers and Executive Committee Members to their new (or renewed) positions. I want to thank all of you for your commitment and service. Our Change of Watch ceremony took place on February 16 th. I would like to give a BIG Thank You to our crew of volunteers responsible for such a lovely venue: Pam and Ron Tichy, Christine and John Zimmerman, Paul Moses, Moe Gaccione, and Steve Gustafson. I also want to thank Chef Dan Peranich from Fowler Street Grill for a fabulous dinner. Everyone I spoke to raved about their dinner selection. As I mentioned during the ceremony, the greatest thing about our squadron is our members! We re so fortunate to have people who pitch in without being asked. Who volunteer to do something that they feel they re capable of doing. We ve got great instructors, a terrific list of volunteers for our Farmer s Market Booth, a smooth running Co-Op charting group, dedicated VSC volunteers, hard working committee chairs and helpful members who attend their meetings and carry out squadron activities, numerous volunteers for the Oktoberfest Fundraiser, people who write boating articles, give interviews, work office duty and produce a Fantastic Newsletter! I also want to thank all of our members, members from other squadrons, and District Officers who attended our ceremony. District Commander Sue Lomastro, AP read the following quote from Elizabeth Andrew: Volunteers DO NOT Necessarily Have The Time; They Have The Heart. Thank you for your dedication! THE BUOYS THE BUOYS publishes issues monthly except for July and August, by the Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron, Inc. 4 United States Power Squadrons Executive Department KIDDIE FIRE EXTINGUISHER RECALL Kiddie recalled most of the fire extinguishers with plastic handles and push buttons due to failure to discharge and nozzle detachment. has a pop up window that will assist you in determining if you have one of the recalled fire extinguishers and the procedures for obtaining a replacement. The following was obtained from an article on the Wink News website. Lee county Florida has over 47,000 registered boats. This makes our county a prime location for boats thieves. According to the Lee county Sheriff s office the thieves are targeting 25 foot boats and larger, with multiple high performance engines. The boats are used for human trafficking and smuggling. Deputies advised the thieves are sophisticated and scout high end residential areas for boats to steal. The Lee County Marine Patrol also believes the thieves perform counter surveillance to detect marine patrols. Sheriff s deputies suggested boat owners equip their boat with GPS tracking devices or a security system. EPIRB - Emergency Position indicating Radio Beacon The EPIRB electronic beacon, when activated will send out a signal to satellites that monitor for these signals worldwide. The satellites use a variety of sources to track the location of the beacon, the most accurate are the ones that use GPS, and doppler from the satellites. The nearest search and rescue facility are notified for response. The EPIRB S are available in a variety of forms for personal wear, or attached to a vessel. While I was employed as an emergency medical service helicopter pilot, I worked with two retired Coast Guard pilots who had worked on both coasts and Alaska. Both of them told me they never found a survivor alone in the water without a signaling device, even in the day time. I mentioned to one of the pilots I was moving to Florida. He suggested I obtain an EPIRB. I said I did not plan on boating in the ocean. His response was most of the people I rescued did not either. I asked how accurate the EPIRB S were. His response I followed a boat on a trailer up I-95 while flying a Coast Guard helicopter until I could get the police to stop the vehicle. If you travel in the ocean perhaps you may consider an EPIRB. Safe boating everyone Steve Parris Executive Officer

6 United States Power Squadrons Administrative Officer Administrative Officer Report The building repairs and remodels on the second floor are nearly complete and the updates look fabulous! We are still working on the rear entrance staircase, making the treads a little bigger and covering them with new surface material that will be easy to clean and not slippery when wet. On the first floor, new front doors have been installed. Additionally, new flooring has been placed in room 101, the front foyer and the hallway. Soon we will update the office and conference room as well, and complete the hallway tile. Lt./C Jill Berger, S We have 22 great new members so far this year, so if you see someone you do not know at a meeting or outing, introduce yourself and welcome them to our squadron. Several new members are already getting involved in social and boating activities and volunteering in various capacities. We truly appreciate the hard work and dedication of all of our volunteers. CCSAPS could not operate without you! We are currently working on some changes to our website, ccsaps.org, to update and streamline information and aid in navigation. We will be linking some parts of our site to the USPS website, and updating text and pictures to freshen up our public face. A big thanks goes to Harold Garrels for his work on these updates. We also have some interest in creating a Facebook presence for CCSAPS. Cathy Corey, Linda Seaton and I will be meeting soon to get started. If you are active on Facebook, and interested in helping set up and maintain a Facebook site, please contact me at jillbergerrn@gmail.com. Entertainment Committee The Entertainment committee deserves a standing ovation for providing two great dinners in February Merit Mark dinner and Change of Watch. Fowler Street Grill catered both parties. There were 72 people at Merit Mark dinner, enjoying great food, drink and fellowship. Marge had a sweet award ceremony, which everyone appreciated and enjoyed. Change of Watch was a more formal affair, with 62 in attendance. The tables were beautifully decorated and the food and service were wonderful. Sue Lamastro, District 22 Commander, swore in new bridge officers and Executive Committee members. See more pictures in this issue.

7 Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron The Kayak Group The kayak group had a magnificent day on the water last month. The gentle breezes and comfortable temperatures were a part of it, but the scenery was the special treat at SHELL CREEK, The prettiest creek you never heard of. There were eighteen paddlers, seventeen kayaks, including six folks who were new to the group four of whom had never before tried kayaking. The new people took to the water just fine, and might have discovered a new way to have fun. The kayak rental company was very helpful in getting everyone set up and feeling comfortable on the water. The kayakers were out about 3½ hours, including their lunch stop, and traveled upstream about 2½ miles. They like to go upstream first so they can do some drifting on the way back. Kayak outings are the third Tuesday of the month, so the next trip will be March 20 destination TBA. If you want to be on the list, contact Gary Brooks: guppy42@embarqmail.com. This outing was proof that you don t need to know a thing about kayaking to get started. You just need to enjoy being on the water in the beautiful backcountry of the real Florida. Fishing Group The guest speaker for the February meeting, Mike Shelton, entertained the Fishing Group guests while providing some great information and answering questions about local angling. Check out the Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron Fishing Group Facebook page to see what s biting and who s catching. Weekend Boaters The weekenders went to The Three Fishermen in February. It was a drop-dead-gorgeous day on the water, not a cloud in the sky. The large group took over the deck and had a great time. Quite a few new members joined the outing and made some new friends. There were three winners of the split-the-pot drawing, totaling $150! If you would like to be on the list for this group, contact John Farmer: johnfarmer09@aol.com Cruise and Rendezvous The C&R group cruised to the Pink Shell at Fort Myers Beach in February. The next trip is March at South Seas Island Resort. Check now for any remaining space!!! Keeping members involved! Lt./C Jill Berger, S Sunrise at Pink Shell Marina

C&R, Weekenders, Kayak Group, Fishing Group, Scuba are groups within the Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron. You don t need to join in the activities of just one group. You may have a day boat and figure that the C&R is only for sleep -aboard boats. Not true!!! There are some cruises where members stay in the available lodging such as T ween Waters, South Seas, Pink Shell. or drive over for the day. There are also monthly luncheons with the C&R just a short drive or take your boat. It s a great way to meet up with friends, learn the local waterways and try out some new restaurants. The Weekenders usually have an informational meeting each month followed by a Saturday cruise to a local restaurant. Even if you don t have a boat, you can still attend the meeting and make sure you are receiving their blast about the upcoming trip. You may drive your car to the restaurant or maybe able to go on someone elses boat. Don t have a kayak? The kayak group usually meets at a location where you can rent a kayak. What better way to learn than with a bunch of safety minded boaters. You will find contact information throughout this newsletter. If you want to learn about fishing in the local waters, get in touch with the fishing group. Same with Scuba, just make contact to explore what the Squadron has to offer. Feel free to attend the meetings for any group.

12 United States Power Squadrons Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron Presents Our Small Boat Maneuvering Courses You get both classroom and On-The Water Training No matter what kind of boat you have our Seamanship On-The-Water course or the new Small boat maneuvering Course will teach you how to boat safely, and have more fun on the water. We now provide a combination of classroom and On-The-Water (OTW) training programs designed to teach you the basics of boating safety on the water. You will learn and practice docking, boat handling underway, and much more. Option 1. For new squadron members who have a boat and desire some basic boat maneuvering skills, we now offer On -the-water training for our Seamanship class graduates. Take Seamanship and sign up for the On-The-Water training and we will provide hands-on training on any of the skills you learned in Seamanship on you in your own boat. This training is designed for boat owners who would like a little hands on boat maneuvering training following the Seamanship course. There is no additional charge for this training and it is open to all Seamanship class graduates. Option 2. For squadron members who do NOT already own a boat, OR might be uncomfortable training in their own boat, but still desire hands-on boat training the Squadron now offers a 3-4 hour classroom "What to Expect" training session in preparation for a 3-4 hour on-the-water hands on session. Once members have completed our classroom training session they are partnered with a Captain from the Freedom Boat Club (FBC) for the on-the-water training session. The on water training is carried out on a FBC vessel that is fully insured and under the guidance of a qualified boat Captain. Membership in the FBC is not required for this training. Fees Including workbook, the classroom preparatory session and the on-the-water training session; Single Student Charge $125 Couples charge = $230 Note: FBC does not provide this training to the public. You must be a member of the Power Squadron to qualify for this training. For more information contact Randy Headrick, RDHeadrick@usa.net, or sign up in the Squadron office Mon-Sat

19 United States Power Squadrons In an effort to keep our facility ready for parties and health inspectors we would like to put a few teams together to work on our kitchen. 2-3 people per team would work well. Time involved would be 2-3 hours per cleaning. We would like to schedule clean-ups twice a month, dates and times are flexible. The more volunteers we get, the fewer times a team will be on the rotation. Please send your name and contact information to me ASAP. Feel free to form a team and let me know you would like to work together. It s also a good way to earn Merit Mark Credit. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. Lt.
