Lomastro, AP Sarasota suebudfl@verizon.net Your new District Commander is sending Spring greetings. What a paradise we live in. Congratulations to all the Spring Conference award recipients. D22 had four of the ten highest ranking Squadrons in the Nation; Peace River Sail and Power, Sanibel Captiva Sail and Power, Sarasota Power and Sail and Venice Sail and Power all were recognized with National s Distinguished Squadron Civic Service Awards. District 22 was awarded Top District by Boat US Civic Service Award in recognition of exceptional service and public boating safety education to the boating community. Congratulations goes to the collective efforts of all the Squadrons in D22. D22 also was First Place in the USPS 2016 Growth Award for achieving 100% retention. Fantastic work is being done in D22 to grow and retain members. 1 April 2017 was my Change of Watch and I totally enjoyed the evening. Thanks to all who were involved. I shared my message of the District wants every Squadron to be successful and that s the only way that District will succeed. As your DC, my Bridge and I will be here for you to offer assistance where ever it is needed. The Spring Conference was such an enjoyable few days. The hospitality Squadrons, Clearwater, Manatee, St. Petersburg and Venice did a great job. This Joint Hospitality event was at the Boat Club in Punta Gorda. That was followed with a delicious dinner including many home-made desserts thanks to Peace River. 2 EXECUTIVE OFFICER D/Lt/C Donald Cook, SN First, I want to thank you for electing me as your Executive Officer for the watch year. I will do all in my power to perform the duties of the office and be worthy of the confidence you have displayed trusting me with this responsibility. The Executive Department includes many functions generally described as external affairs. Boating Safety, Cooperative Charting, Vessel Safety Checks, Homeland Security, Public Relations, Environmental, Radio Technical, and Government interaction being the most prominent. Fortunately, some very talented and knowledgeable members have volunteered to chair and be members of the committees necessary to accomplish the aforementioned functions. For complete information on all the departments download the District Directory from the District web site. It lists all the officers, committees, and other useful information including addresses etc. for all included. Nothing is ever perfect. I must report that some of my committees and people were inadvertently omitted from the previously mentioned directory. I m not sure if only the Executive Department was affected. The following should have been included: Sea Scout Liaison; Neil H. Kempf, P, Squadron Development; Wayne F. Partie, SN, Constance H. Beckman, SN, Visitation Program and Certification; Berry Rush, SN, and Coast Guard Auxiliary Liaison; A. Andre Spalvins, AP. If other departments also have omissions or errors I m sure they will be communicated to you. We will have a busy year, with all the usual activities. Plan to attend the District Conference in the fall as well as the C&R in November. All can have a lot of fun at these events. We do plan the usual Officers Training event shortly into the New Year as well as further DB2000 instruction. Other events will be announced as they are finalized. Don t forget the fall Governing Board in Dallas in September. These are not only for the higher ups, any member can obtain valuable information, have fun, and enjoy your district s Happy Hour and the district dinner at a nice restaurant. If you come you will meet a lot of great people from other squadrons and districts. Make a vacation out of it, there are many great sights and activities in the area. Remember, the only reason myself and my fellow District Officers and the related infrastructure exist is to serve your needs. Let us know what we can do for you and we will try to assist you in any way we can. Thanks again for your support. I hope to see all of you at our functions and hope to visit as many of your squadrons as possible. COMMANDER, Continued from page 1 D/L/C Sandy Krupa, P again captured our imaginations with some fun games. The evening ended with a spectacular sunset over Charlotte Harbor thanks to our Creator. I have wonderful memories of the weekend. Another goal was to visit the Squadrons and participate is their activities. I m happy to report that I have 4 such outings planned. I ll be visiting Lakeland, Cape Coral and, of course, Sarasota. In Venice, They have invited me to participate in a Turkey Fry not sure what it is but it sound delicious. In Lakeland I ll be attending their boat safety class and meeting new potential members. Sarasota is having a new member evening and I ll be representing the District. Of course attending Tampa s Kite Flying at the beautiful Fort De Soto Park in Tierra Verde was enjoyable and what a beautiful place. Some dates that you might want to get on your calendars: Looking ahead, the New Bridge Officer training will include a segment on Leadership and is scheduled for 10 February Location TBD. Again there will be a DB2000 training on 10 March 2018 and locations TBD. Yes, just reaching my first 30 days as your DC and liking the job. Thanks again. Thank you, DC Sue Lomastro, AP - 2 -

3 ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER D/Lt/C Ted Reiss, SN-CN Who is your new District Administrative Officer? That would be me. Over the past 19 years in squadrons in New Jersey, Maryland and now Marco Island, Florida, I have made many friends, learned much related to safe boating, and shared my experiences as a squadron instructor and as a delivery captain for new boats. I am involved with VSC, Co-Op charting and am a BOC Inland Navigator Certifier. I have held squadron Bridge positions as Commander, Executive Officer, Administrative Officer and Educational Officer and now am primed to help you and District 22 have fun and become even better boaters. one more America s Boating Course, finishing a course, taking another seminar, checking member s boats, something for Safe Boating week, increasing your membership as just a few areas to pursue. Let me know how I can help you. In the meantime let s go boating, have fun and be safe. Tampa Squadron Kite Flying Contest 26 March 2017 The Administrative Department addresses several main areas; District Conferences, Membership, Cruise & Rendezvous. Boating Activities, and Operations Training. Thanks to the great contributions from at least 20 volunteer members from nine of our district s 17 squadrons these areas will continue to provide assistance running these many activities. If you have questions, just ask me. After many successful years heading up the Conference Committee P/C Julie Mc Garr, S, has turned the reins over to P/D/C Myles Gee, SN, and D/ Lt Sami Lucas, JN. With their dedication and behind the scenes leadership the upcoming conferences will continue to be informative and support you. The Fall D-22 C & R was rescheduled to start on 31 October at the South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island with a departure date of 3 November. This is an excellent opportunity to socialize with members from all our squadrons and enjoy a wonderful resort area. Host squadrons Cape Coral, Clearwater, For Myers and Sarasota are busy planning activities, parties and meals. Look for more details in flyer and future Beacons. Come by boat or car. Book early. Are you ready to pick up your awards at the Fall Conference? If not there is still time to contribute accomplishments in the areas of education, vessel safety checks, membership, social, civic etc. - maybe Cdr. Jan Keller, P, DC Sue Lomastro, AP and PC Don Parrish, SN (Sue awarding winning trophy to Jan Keller) - 3 -

4 EDUCATIONAL OFFICER D/Lt/C Jack Purse, SN Happy Springtime everyone! This is the time of year that many across the country are getting their boats ready for the summer season and tuning up their boating skills that took on a little rust over the winter months. For those folks and for any of us that are visual learners and need a little recurrent training let me recommend and perhaps introduce you to the USPS Digital Media Library, DML for short. This online catalog of professionally produced videos covers topics ranging from life jackets and vessel safety checks to preparing for arrival and docking. Take the time to look at a few of these and you ll find they become addicting to watch. The best news is that the stars in the videos are USPS members from across the country including our friends from the Marco Island and Naples squadrons as well as folks from New England and the West Coast. You can easily find the DML video portfolio at or also online at YouTube just search for USPS DML. New this year under the Educational Department is a seminar-style education program on boating safety that complements youth programs with education and hands-on training for children in 1st through 6th grades on essential boating safety practices. The instruction is aided by the Boating Safety for Kids manual and companion online instructor manual which can be found in the Kid s Zone section of the Educational Department Home Page departments/ This is a great program for youth activities and may be presented along with education for mom and dad found in our USPS University courses and seminars for a whole family boating safety experience. A reminder to all our SEOs and Squadron leadership please begin thinking now about your nominee for the upcoming Chapman Award evaluation season. Squadron nomination packages are due in the District by 15 July. Our goal is to have a nominee from each D22 squadron. Please remember that Squadrons may submit the same nominee more than once and even a Squadron that won last year can submit a new nominee for this year. I hope to see many of you at our National meetings in Dallas and our D22 fall conference at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center. Until then, my best to you and yours for safer, smarter boating! BREAK THE PLASTIC HABIT Reprinted from an article by Cdr. Cheryl Matheson P, of Anna Maria Island Sail and Power Squadron As your Safety Officer, I am offering some advice about how to help keep the Earth safe. The Earth cannot digest plastic. Plastic things are bought and used and that s it the Earth is burdened further. This issue has reached a critical point and we ALL HAVE to act. Because WE are the issue. The Earth cannot digest plastic. Once it exists, it s never going to be gone. Every bit of plastic that s ever been made still exists on the planet. Plastic in the ocean now outnumbers sea life six to one. All examined sea turtle species have been documented with plastic in or around their bodies. One million sea birds are killed annually from plastic in our oceans. Properly recycle what you have and I highly suggest following this advice: Six Plastic Habits to Change Now: STOP USING AND/OR REPLACE WITH REUSA- BLE/WASHABLE: 1. Plastic cutlery 2. Plastic straws 3. Bottled water 4. Takeaway coffee or drink cups 5. *Plastic shopping bags These bags are now banned in California, Hawaii, South Australia, and Tasmania. Do this: Keep reusable bags in your car or soft nylon ones in your purse. 6. Take away containers Do this: cover dishes with a plate (stop using plastic wrap, too!). Use, and re-use, your Ziplock bags. Think of it as April s spring cleaning except for life! *See more about plastic bags:

12 D Panama Canal Cruise First of all, THANK YOU to the D22 members that recently completed a 10 day cruise on the Coral Princess (26 Feb 8 Mar 2017). The total number in our group was 140 and I m told a good time was Our ship-the Coral Princess had by all. For many in the group, it was their first time to see and experience the magnificent Canal lock system as our ship went through the Gatun Locks and into LaKe Gatun. Our cruise began in Fort Lauderdale and visited the island of Aruba first. Members took part in various shore excursions they chose respectively. From there, we cruised on to Cartagena, Columbia where many took an Old City tour which included a visit to Castillo San Felipe de Barajas designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Next was what we d all been waiting for, the entering of the Panama Canal via the Gatun Locks. After that spectacular event, our ship moored in Lake Gatun and passengers disembarked via tenders to their various excursions. Later, Old City our ship began its outbound transit through the Gatun Locks and docked in Colon to receive passengers back onboard. Our next stop was to have been Limon, Costa Rica but the Captain broadcast that Puerto Limon had extremely adverse weather conditions, therefore that stop was cancelled. We later were told that Grand Cayman was also cancelled for the same issue (12-15 swells). Thankfully, due to quick work by Princess, we were able to stop at Belize which was a great save. Many of us took various tours and enjoyed this impromptu visit. The cruise was much more than just the ports of call-there is always a great variety of activities on board for passengers to Cartagena, Columbia participate in. Part of our group perks were 2 exclusive, open bar cocktail parties where our members got to meet one another and exchange information about the various entertainment, shows, wine tastings and more. This cruise was also a fundraiser for the District so thanks to the 52 D22 members, a check for $4,972 was presented to D/C Maciag and D/Lt/C Anderson during the Spring Conference. We d LOVE to have you join us again next year for the 25 Feb 4 Mar 2018 Western Caribbean cruise on Holland America s beautiful ms Eurodam. The Bridge has decided next year s cruise will be a fundraiser to both D22 and to Squadrons (provided they book at least 8 cabins). Please contact Lt Dawn Eckhart at: dawnstraveldeals@gmail.com or (727) to sign up today! Krupas & Eckharts
