I know we will have many challenges in the upcoming year and I know I can t do it alone, that s why we have a great Bridge and a great membership with a lot of talent so that we can continue to keep District 22 one of the best and largest Districts in the country. And may I add we will reach our goals and accomplishments having fun. Several years ago we all heard the hype that the Boomers were retiring and Florida was one of the states that they were going, and then the economy collapsed, the housing bubble burst. Well we now have had a couple of great years and we are now seeing the Boomers retiring and where are they coming, right here on the west coast of Florida. So I ask the Squadron leaders to help us as individuals to become better recruiters so our District and your Squadrons will continue to grow. We can also accomplish this thru communication with each squadron, spreading your ideas as you did in the Commanders meeting. I have been to nine of these meetings and this was truly one of the best, Commanders, please share this meeting with your members. It s been overwhelming to me for all of you offering your support and help; and as I said at the Change of Watch I will roll my sleeves up and work as hard as I can for each of you. Your new Bridge will be tackling the continuing Conference losses; we will be offering educational round tables pertinent to boating, and alternate venues. This isn t going to happen overnight but plan on change in the future years. Remember the District Conferences are for all of the members so we need you to show up. 4 ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER D/Lt/C Waren Maciag, JN I first want to thank the Nominating Committee and all those that supported my election to DAO. I have been impressed with the hardworking, can do attitude of the D22 Bridge and committee members. They all want to do it right. Let me now provide a little info about myself. My wife Marge and I raised 3 children on a farm growing corn, soybeans and cattle near Cincinnati. They are now adults residing in Davenport Iowa, Cincinnati Ohio and Washington D.C. well it could be Maine, Texas and Alaska. As I write this, Marge is an elementary school teacher working with special education students. I do hope that she retires soon but I know she loves her work. I have been boating all my life. Marge and I and the kids sailed Lake Erie for over 20 years. Today we are primarily power boaters and kayaker s living here in Florida the past 6 years. I need to mention my almost 40 years working at GE s jet engine factory in engineering and then management. My takeaways speed, simplicity, cost and innovation. And above all, without change GE will not be around for the next 100 years! I am the most recent past commander of the Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron (CCSAPS) having over 550 members upon the end of my Watch. The Squadron owns its building and has a few assets to carry out the mission of the USPS. Education is heavily promoted having some excellent instructors who are very knowledgeable of the local waters and with years of boating experience. About 45% are retires, 35 % working full time and the remainder 20% part time. There are a number who have families teenagers and a number involved supporting the Sea Scouts Troop which is sponsored by the Squadron. There are numerous boating activities including Kayaking, Scuba Diving, Fishing, Sailing, C&R and Weekend Boating with many participants in the events sponsored by these groups. CERT is in formation, Coop Charting and Vessel Check has excellent Squadron participation. CCSAPS has many challenges today as one would expect but is hopeful at finding and trying new solutions. Vessel Examiners are reminded to complete the recertification prior to 30 June It s easy, educational, and does not take a lot of time. Get with your VSC Chairman and schedule your class. On that note, besides the typical items that may fail a vessel to qualify for a new Inspection Sticker, what is probably the most important electronic feature that is not hooked up? If you said the NMEA connections from the GPS to the Radio, you are very correct. One of the things I always ask: Do you have an MMSI? Secondly, is your GPS hooked up to your Radio? Some will say yes and yes, and some will give you the deer in the headlights look. I would venture to say that some 90% of vessels I inspect the owner has no clue what an MMSI is or will tell me the wiring is too difficult. Explain to the boat owner the importance of that little red button on the VHF radio. To the Chairmen and members of the Executive Department, I give you all a personal thank you for taking the task to hand. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER (Continued) I am very proud of what the Squadron accomplished and the changes it has made. On to USPS, Sail and Power Boating, and my D22 duties. I have been told that I have some challenges before me. I am excited to begin to address them. 5 EDUCATION OFFICER D/Lt/C Donald Keith Cook, SN First I want to thank you for reelecting me as your District Educational Officer. I will do my best to justify your trust and expectations. It was great meeting so many of you at your changes of watch. All of you made me feel welcome. It was a great honor to present the Instructor of the Year award to the individual you chose to receive the honor. In each case the selected instructor performed above the norm. While this is an honor within the squadron I believe the rest on the district should be aware of their identity. (Rank and Grade reflect the time of selection As you all know by now, P/R/C Ken Beckman, SN was a Chapman Award winner recognized at the National Meeting in Jacksonville this January. This was the second year in a row for our District. To keep the string alive we must have nominations from as many squadrons as possible. In late spring each SEO will receive a package from national with full instructions for making the nomination. We have the talent let s make it known. More detailed info will follow when the packages arrive. Now is the time to prepare your class schedule so members can make their educational plans for the fall semester. Everyone give some thought to what class(s) you would prefer. SECRETARY D/Lt/C Sandra Krupa, P kruof2@tampabay.rr.com This year s Change of Watch has brought changes to the Secretary Department. Sadly For D22, D/Lt/C Carol Musco s 3 year term as Secretary ended this year and oh, what a legacy she leaves! There are several committee changes throughout the District committees, so make sure to check your 2014 District 22 roster to find all your new contacts. The roster also includes dates for upcoming events and squadron responsibility for the events please take the time to check if your squadron will be involved. P/D/C Ken Guscott sent out a message just prior to the conference with instructions to help you obtain the roster online, if you did not save it, suggest you contact him for help.
