Lt Gen Owens hit a homerun with his speech; he had a tough act to follow after the evening opener of an outstanding performance by the 82nd Division All American Chorus. The chorus sang a medley of their hit songs with my favorite Blood upon the Risers. Speaking of the chorus, we auctioned off 2 of their CDs which brought in $80.00 toward our scholarship fund General Owens gave an update on the national membership and initiatives. He stressed the importance of our heritage of our founder members and some challenges ahead. He said he enjoys visiting the Flights because it gives him an opportunity to learn more and meet the members as well as an opportunity for him to serve as an ambassador for National. He said, "Each generation stands on the shoulders of those who have gone before them, so he stood on his grandfather's shoulders and his active duty sons now stand on his, just as the current Daedalians stood on the shoulders of the founding Daedalians." He had many positive comments about our flight and our Flight Officers, I am proud to be the Flight Captain, but we all know that an organization is only as good as the folks who make it up. I was very pleased to hear him announce our flight was selected as the top flight in our size category (letter is at end of the Newsletter) and will now compete for the top Daedalian flight for 2016 to be announced at the National Convention. I received this very nice thank you note from General Owens after he got home: Joe, Thank you for the invitation...that was one of the nicest and most enjoyable Daedalian events I've been to. Ya'll have a great Flight and it was a pleasure meeting everyone. Walt and Inge were wonderful hosts too...we talked till midnight after the dinner. General Springer gave us a short talk about how the flight came about starting in late 1976 and up to the charter date of 26 March 1977, forty three years to the day that National was chartered at Maxwell Field. Our April meeting brings us future aviators; we'll have our AFROTC cadets from Duke and NC State, with their commanders, plus our CFIP high school students. There is a write up in our NOTAM section on the CFIP cadets. There is a future meeting you don't want to miss, I am pleased to announce our guest speaker for August is Joe Dittmar, a 9/11 World Trade Center survivor. I recently heard Joe speak and he gives a very moving and emotional talk, therefore we plan to have spouses or other guests attend. March Meeting Adjutant Report At this meeting the Flight celebrated the 40 th Anniversary of the Flight being chartered on March 26, Flight attendance was 27 members and 20 guests. The large number of guests consisted of spouse or significant other in attendance to celebrate this historical occasion with us. The 82 nd All American Airborne Chorus performed many patriot songs prior to the meeting. The Flight was honored to have Lt. Gen. (ret) Doug Owens, National Commander, attend as our guest speaker. He gave us a comprehensive briefing on the status of the National organization covering mission, objectives, membership, finance and programs. Reminder new membership application and instructions can be found at ship_application Membership is done mostly online now using the website: There are many small jobs required to operate the flight. Most do not require a lot of time, but would greatly relieve those who commit a good deal of time to meeting the expectations and requirements

3 needed to run the flight. This month the Flight needs assistance for members to volunteer to present JROTC award medals at various area High Schools awards ceremonies. The total collected was $ and he won $ Cadet Flight Indoctrination Program (CFIP) The flight will support 2 high school cadets this year and am happy Steve Borden is running it again. The students are; Cadet Pieter Enkema from Union Pines High School NJROTC and Cadet Wendell "Mack" Roberson from Pinecrest High School AFJROTC. Steve has met both cadets who are both planning to attend the April meeting. The flight school has been outsourced at Moore County and Steve has talked to the school who are excited about supporting our cadets and the CFIP initiative. 4 Meet your Flight #48 Wingmen Mark Gilles was our 2 nd member to receive a US Flag flown over the US Capitol in honor of his 90 th birthday in He received his wings at Lemoore AAF, CA and then went onto fly B-17s during WWII in the 95 Bomb Group out of England. He flew 30+ missions mostly over Germany. He came back to the States on 3 Sep 1944 and married June, on 21 Oct After the war, he flew B-29s in the Pacific then returned stateside to fly B-50Ds and B-47s for the 509 Bomb Wing. He commanded several Bomb Squadrons the 393 rd and the 661 st. He proudly served our country for twenty-two years retiring in Pete Vetters is one of our newest members, a 2 nd generation Daedalian, was born at Dow AFB (Bangor, ME) in He was commissioned thru AFROTC and entered active duty in He received his Navigator wings from Mather AFB and went onto Little Rock AFB to train in the C He has over 4,700 hrs. as a Nav and over a 1,000 hrs. in general aviation aircraft. The military aircraft flown include T-37B, T-43, C-130E, EC-130E, WC-130E, WC-130H, C-160 (Transall) and as a civilian pilot has flown numerous GA type C-150, C-152, C-172, PA-28R-200, C-182, BE-76, BE-20, BE-350, P46T, AA-5B, DA-40, DA-20, C-90, CE-550, PA-44, PA-28, PA-28R. His assignments included Pre-Nav - Laughlin AFB, Nav & Adv Nav - Mather AFB, C-130 RTU - Little Rock AFB, C-130 TAC Nav - Little Rock AFB, C-130 IN - Little Rock AFB, and C-130 Requal - Little Rock AFB. Operational Assignments: 7th ACCS - Keesler AFB, 53d WRS - Keesler AFB, 37th AS - Rein-Main AB, 86th OSS (37th AS) - Ramstein AB, 41st AS - Pope AFB, Det 1 4th ASOG - Caserma Ederle (TALO), 41st AS - Pope AFB.
