1 Flight Captain: Joe Fitzpatrick Vice Flt. Capt: Vacant Adjutant: Walt Dietrich Treasurer: Chris Goff Provost Marshall: Dave Devendorf CFIP: Steve Borden Flight Captain s Corner What a sad and shocking we all got on December 1 st, the passing of Brig Gen Bob Norman. I couldn t believe it. Whether you called him a fellow general officer, fellow pilot, fellow QB, fellow Daedalian, Gen Norman was a friend to us all. When I took over as Flight Captain, he was right there assuring me I have his total support. He was one of the main driving forces for the flight to get into the, Daedalians Flying Training program. I could count on him to step in for me when I was away, he truly enjoyed inducting new members. He was a mentor to me I m really going to miss him. Thank you to all the members who came out for his memorial service, as we learn more about his burial plans we ll let everyone know. Bob turned 83 the day before he passed away and would have been a Daedalian for 50 years on the 21 st of December. We started a tradition with Lt Gen Springer and Peyton Cook when a member celebrates 50 years as a Daedalian we present them with a Daedalian coin. I presented Bob s daughter Christina a coin at the memorial service. In addition, Doug Rowe did a nice print of a US Flag shadow box with Bob s name on it. It was displayed on a table with other family memorabilia. At the end of the newsletter are a collage of photos of Gen Norman doing what he did best, having a good time and talking! The flight donated a $100 in Gen Norman s name to the Moore County chapter of MOAA. I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry and Holy Christmas with family and friends. It was great having some of our active members, and their guests, at our November meeting. Having a luncheon instead of dinner has proven a benefit to our Pope and Ft Bragg members to come by for a quick lunch and meeting. Once again Walt Dietrich not only planned the luncheon but for the 2nd year in a row he s been the program. Speaking of Walt, he is stepping down from being our Flight Adjutant so we need someone to step up. We all were very happy to see Mark Gilles in attendance, he celebrated his 98th birthday on December 11 th, June must have had a big cake to hold that many candles. This month our program Kyle Snyder from the NC State to talk about the state regulating drones etc. We ll also have our fall ROTC scholarship winner, Cadet Ambrose from Campbell University, attend to receive his check and be recognized. Starting this month, our treasurer Chris Goff will be sending out to each member who made donations to the flight this year a summary so you can use while preparing your taxes. I will send it out via . As we were finalizing the Newsletter we learned of the passing of Ken Spring, he was a proud and loyal member of Daedalians for 20 years. Here is info from his obituary, the Flight sent a $100 in Ken s name to Disable American Veterans. Visitation for family/friends will be held on January 10, from 12:00 to 1:30 PM at Adcock Funeral Home in Spring Lake. A graveside service/interment with military honors will follow at 2:00 PM at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery on Fort Bragg, NC. I m always open to suggestions for a program, so if you have a topic or you d like to do a presentation yourself please let me know. Our next member to turn 90 will be Ron Davis this December and we will request Senator Burr have a US Flag flown over the US Capital in Washington DC in honor of Ron s Birthday. Ron will be our 9 th flag recipient since we started this program in 2008 and Peyton Cook will follow in March I look forward to what holds for the Harley H Pope Flight in 2018! Volabamus Volamus Joe

5 Robert Arthur Bob Norman, 83 of Pinehurst, passed away Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at his home. He was born in Rapid City, S.D., and spent his early years living on Sioux Indian Reservations while his father worked for the Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs. During World War II while his father served in the Navy, the family settled in Rye, N.Y., where Bob graduated from Rye High School in He earned a bachelor of arts degree in international relations with honors from Brown University in He was a member of Air Force ROTC and Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He received a Masters of Business Administration degree from George Washington University in Upon graduation from Brown, Bob was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and attended pilot training. His first assignment was at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla., as an instructor pilot. It was during this tour that Bob met his future wife, Christa, from Berlin, Germany, while she was working as an international stewardess for Pan American Airlines. To make up for her mistake of accidentally spilling coffee on his lap while on a transatlantic flight, he convinced her to leave her glamorous jetsetting career to become a military wife and move to Oklahoma! They married in November 1961 and took advantage of her Pan Am benefits to travel around the world on their honeymoon. Their daughter, Christina, was born in Enid in In 1964, he was sent as an advisor to the Republic of Vietnam working as an air liaison officer and forward air controller in support of the Vietnamese army and air force. The family reunited in 1965 and moved to England, where he flew F-4s. The next 20 years saw multiple moves between the U.S. and Europe, with assignments at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Seymour Johnson AFB; the Pentagon; and Ramstein and Sembach Air Bases in Germany. His final assignment was as deputy defense adviser to the U.S. Mission to NATO in Brussels, Belgium. He served in the USAF for 30 years and retired in 1987 as a brigadier general and command pilot with more than 5,700 flying hours. Following his retirement from the Air Force, the family remained in Brussels, where Bob headed the European office of E Systems and then Raytheon Industries. He and Christa enjoyed their years in Europe, participating each year in the NATO Political Industrial Conferences, which afforded them the opportunity to visit many of the beautiful countries of Europe. He retired from industry in 2000 and they moved to Pinehurst, where he could indulge in his hobbies of tennis, golf and flying his small airplane. Bob was active in the Military Officers Association, the Republican Men s Club, Daedalians and the QB s, two fraternal aviation societies. Robert was in charge of the MOAA Empty Stocking Fund for many years, providing Christmas cheer for many needy families in Moore County. Robert s pride and joy were his family: his daughter Christina, her husband Jeff and their three children: Katie, Stephanie and Caroline. Christina followed in her father s footsteps and joined the Air Force and married an Air Force pilot. Bob and Jeff enjoyed many discussions about flying over the years. Katie became the third generation to join the military, commissioning in the Air Force
6 upon her graduation from Creighton University. Bob encouraged and supported all the girls to excel in education and explore the world. Both Stephanie and Caroline joined in his passion for international relations and history graduating with those degrees from the University of Denver and Tulane University respectively. They all will miss their greatest champion. He is survived by his wife, Christa H. Norman (nee Krafft); daughter, Christina Norman Thompson and her husband, Jeffery, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; granddaughters, Katherine (Tokyo, Japan), Stephanie (London, England) and Caroline (Denver, Colo.); also survived by one sister, Carolyn Crenson and her husband, William, of Omaha, Neb. A memorial service will be held Monday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Pinehurst. Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to MOAA- Moore County Chapter, P.O.
