AMERICA S PREMIER FRATERNAL ORGANIZATION OF MILITARY PILOTS Flight 99 Officers Flight Captain s Remarks Proceedings 8 May 2014 Regel, and signed by both Jen and Mackie, is reproduced on page five of these Proceedings. Flight Captain PAUL SNYDER Home: /Cell: ptsnyder2@msn.com Vice Flight Captain REX TANBERG Home: /Cell: rtanberg@hotmail.com Treasurer / Membership DUANE HEDAHL Home: /Cell: dhedahl@bresnan.net Adjutant / Editor / Historian MIKE BUCK Home: /Cell: mikeandsheridanbuck@gmail.com Provost Marshal JIM BURMAN Home: /Cell: jwjlburman@3riversdbs.net Scholarships ED MANGIS Home: /Cell: edmangis@hotmail.com Paul Snyder, Flight 99 Flight Captain The dinner and meeting in honor of Mother s Day was very well attended. With us were a large number of wives, three officially new members, and almost all of the Big Sky Flight members from the Helena area. Though it was good to see so many of our new friends from the 40 th Helicopter Squadron, we were all sad to say goodbye to Mackie --Mathew Contreras-- as he now departs for Honduras. A copy of a very special note to Flight 99 received from Mackie s girlfriend, Jen The very interesting and wellreceived program by Dr. Art Alt is just one of several planned for the near future. For our next meeting, on June 12 th, we urge everyone to bring their wives or girlfriends to come and hear Lieutenant General Nicholas Kehoe, the Daedalian National Commander, speak to the Flight. August and September meetings will have a retired USAF test pilot and the manager of Air Traffic Control from Great Falls. Both promise to be very interesting! Please plan to join us at the June meeting to show General Kehoe what Big Sky Flight 99 hospitality is all about! Volabamus, Volamus! Paul
May 2014 Meeting Minutes Mike Buck, Flight 99 Adjutant At 1700 hours on 8 May, 29 Big Sky Flight 99 Daedalians and twenty guests met for a Social Hour at the Grizzly Bend Club on Malmstrom Air Force Base. Flight Captain Paul Snyder convened the formal meeting at 1800 hours. Ed Mangis then gave voice to another excellent historical invocation supplied by Sam Birky, this one written by President Thomas Jefferson. A Prayer for the Nation Washington D.C., March 4, 1801 Almighty God, Who has given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. Bless our land with honorable ministry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people, the multitude brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endow with Thy spirit of wisdom those whom in Thy name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that through obedience to Thy law, we may show forth Thy praise among the nations of the earth. In time of prosperity fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in Thee to fail; all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Mike Morrison led the room in the Pledge of Allegiance. Flight Captain Snyder called attention to the Missing Man table, toward which Ken Inabnit then led the members in a toast in water to all those who had gone before us. Ken then offered a toast in wine to the Commander-In-Chief. Guests introduced and toasted included our guest speaker, Dr. Art Alt, and our lovely ladies. The Flight meeting was then briefly adjourned for the duration for the outstanding meal. 48 Members, Ladies Present Wayne Ballantyne, Vince and Myra Bakke, Jim Barfknecht and his daughter Dee, Donn and Julia Borden, Mike and Sheridan Buck, John and Mandy Beurer, Dave and Tanya Cameron, Ted Cogswell, Mat Contreras, Joe and Bonnie Erickson, Blair Hamer, Duane Hedahl, Tom Higgins, Homer and Dorothy Holman, Pete and Traci Hronek, Ken and Kris Inabnit, Ray and Jean Koby, Ed Mangis, Mike and Carleen Milburn, Harry Mitchell, Preston and Katrina Moon, Mike Morrison, Buck and Nancy O Brien, Jerry and Janice Ostrem, Will and Sarah Perry, Shane and Amy Sanders, Jerry and Carol Shanahan, Paul Snyder, and Rex and Marlene Tanberg were all present. Treasurer s Report Flight Treasurer Duane Hedahl reported that Flight 99 currently has 54 members, proudly noting that we have added three new members in just the last few weeks. The Flight bank balance is $7, Flight dues received thus far total $600, and donations to our scholarship fund total $956, with some individual donations as high as $100. Please note that there are only 3 Flight 99 neckties remaining from our latest Flight tie order. Duane stressed that the purchase and the wear of the both the Flight ties and the world-famous green Daedalian blazers is optional. Election Results 29 Ballots were returned in the election of Flight 99 Officers for There were no write-in candidates on the ballots. The Flight membership has voted to retain the current list of officers in their respective offices. Membership Applications Duane also pointed out that application for membership in the Order requires neither a sponsor nor a recommendation from an existing member. Any military pilot can apply for membership. The application and payment of National fees and dues can be made via the Daedalian website
Adjutant s Report Upcoming Guest Speakers On 14 August our guest speaker will be Lt Col Robert "Critter" Malacrida, a retired USAF Test Pilot and Edwards AFB Test Pilot School instructor. Bob will speak to us about the world of military Flight Test. Our 11 September meeting will feature Mr. Tony Nunez, who is the Manager of the Air Traffic Control operations for the Great Falls airport. He will describe the impact of the September 11 th, 2001 attacks on U.S. air traffic operations. Kudos Great thanks to new Big Sky Daedalian Captain Will Perry! He spearheaded a project which has produced a fine, customized Big Sky Flight 99 gift for General Kehoe. To see it for yourself, be sure to join us on 12 June! Blazer Crest Project The Daedalians Crest blazer patch produced for Flight 99 by the Vanguard Corporation will soon be available on the Order s National website store. At $35 plus shipping, the profits will go to the Flight s scholarship fund. The patch was popular with the National Staff; two of the Board members have already placed orders. Because the patches are handmade, the manufacturer has set no minimum order for the patches. An initial batch of ten patches is on its way. As this initial quantity is depleted, the Flight membership can decide whether it wishes to support the purchase of additional stock. Big Sky Cadet Flight Indoctrination Program (CFIP) Col Ed Sheeran, the manager of the National CFIP program, affirms that Flight 99 has all the components required to begin our own CFIP scholarship and flight training program. Flight 99 would screen candidates and select its own recipients for the training. The cost to the Flight would be less than $2,000 per cadet, with the National Order s program matching the funds. Big Sky Daedalian Vince Bakke would serve as our CFIP officer. He and Mike Buck would provide flight Instruction. Vince will make a presentation on the program at an upcoming Flight meeting. Daedalus Flyer Article The next issue of the National Order s magazine, the Daedalus Flyer, should include a "Flight Line" article, complete with photographs, describing Big Sky Flight 99 s recent activities. Coffee Mugs Paul Snyder reported that our new Flight 99 coffee mugs will be shipped to the Flight on 19 May. These mugs will serve as gifts of appreciation for our future guest speakers, and will also be made available to Flight members for purchase, somewhere in the neighborhood of five dollars. MTANG Redesignation Big Sky Flight 99 Daedalian Col Pete Hronek provided an update on activities at the 120 th Fighter Wing. On 31 May the Wing will be redesignated the 120 th Airlift Wing. All Flight 99 members are invited to attend the ceremony. The wearing of a black armband is optional. The Wing currently has 4 Hercules aircraft on its ramp, and plans to have all 8 of its assigned C-130s by the end of June. Maintenance training is underway, and some local flying training sorties will begin in June. Wives Invited for June In recognition of the special occasion of General Kehoe s upcoming visit in June, Mike Buck inquired whether the Flight members wives or girlfriends should be invited to that meeting. Paul Snyder asked the wives present if any of them would like to attend, and roughly half of them indicated that they would. Joe Erikson noted that a motion
May 2014 should be made. Harry Mitchell moved that the wives should be invited to the June meeting. The motion was seconded by Vince Bakke. Despite the presence of numerous wives in the room, the motion still carried unanimously. Change of Command At 1430 hours on 16 May, 2014 Big Sky Daedalian Lt Col John Beurer assumed command of the 40th Helicopter Squadron from his fellow Flight 99 member, Lt Col Mat Contreras. A sizeable gathering was in attendance, including eight more Big Sky Flight 99 Daedalians. The fine ceremony featured a pass in review by a 40th HS helicopter. th 40 HS Commander Lt Col John Beurer, Flanked by His Fellow Daedalians Your Flight 99 Officers From Left to Right: Duane Hedahl, Treasurer. 5 A Note From Jen and Mackie
May 2014 May 2014 Program LOOK AT THE SKY! It s not unusual for Dr. Art Alt to suddenly halt a lecture and then dash out of the classroom, calling for his students to follow him. Once his students are outside, he continues his lecture on the atmosphere by pointing out exotic cloud formations in the skies above Great Falls, explaining their causes and significance. He states that None of them have ever looked at the sky, so they never see any of this stuff. Dr. Alt provided the membership with a highly educational and enjoyable presentation borrowed from his lectures at the University of Great Falls. Featuring numerous images of fascinating cloud formations and atmospheric phenomena, he painted an image of Earth s atmosphere as a complex physical system: Blue Sprites faintly dancing above thunderstorms, clouds shaped like Flying Disks, Ice Crystal Prisms splitting the sunlight into its component colors, Inversions, Undulating Waves- all had the audience spellbound. Great thanks to Dr. Alt for another terrific presentation!
NEXT BIG SKY FLIGHT 99 MEETING: Thursday, 12 June 2014 Social Hour: 1700 Dinner: 1800 National Commander s Visit - Wives Are Invited! Nicholas B. Kehoe is the National Commander of the Order of Daedalians. A retired United States Air Force Lieutenant General, he served as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War. He is also the President and CEO of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. The Daedalian Foundation The Daedalian Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Order of Daedalians. A 501(c)(3) organization, the main purpose of the organization is to provide encouragement for young men and women to become military pilots. The Foundation provides scholarships through a variety of means. The requirements for our scholarships are that you must want to be a military pilot and have a financial need.
