He has had the good fortune to work a variety of assignments in both County Jails, North Patrol, South Patrol, Community Policing, Investigations, Sheriff s Training Academy, Homeland Security and Sacramento International Airport. Captain Torgerson is a strong proponent of Community Policing and looks forward to networking with residents and the business community to address criminal and nuisance activities throughout the North County. Lieutenant Maples Lieutenant Greg Maples is a 27 year veteran of law enforcement, having spent over twenty four years with the Sheriff s Department. He previously worked in the Rocklin Police Department and Sierra County Sheriff s Department. He has worked in numerous assignments, including as a Deputy Sheriff and Watch Commander in the North Area. Other assignments include Air Operations, Canine, Regional Transit, Corrections, and the Airport. He is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm. Lieutenant Maples was raised in Carmichael and was graduated from El Camino High School. He later attended American River College, Sierra College, and Grand Canyon University. With deep personal and career roots in the North Area, this new assignment amounts to a true homecoming. Sergeant Guerrero Sergeant Chris Guerrero is a 24 year veteran of Law Enforcement and was graduated from the Sacramento County Sheriff s Department Academy. Prior to promotion as sergeant he served in several assignments which included Court Security, Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center, Main Jail, Patrol Services where he was promoted to Field Training Officer, and detective with Special Investigations and Intelligence Bureau prior to his promotion to sergeant. 1

2 Sergeant Guerrero was born in Los Angeles and was graduated from Roseville High School and attended Chico State University. His wife is a deputy with the Crime Scene Investigations Bureau and they have two children, both in college; one in sports medicine and the other in the Marine Corp Officers Candidate Program United States with an Aviation Contract. Sergeant Guerrero views his assignment with High Impact Patrol unit as a new opportunity to provide Service with Concern to the citizens of Sacramento County. Sheriff s Community Meeting Series Meetings are scheduled for January, March, May, September and November. We will take a break for the summer and return in the fall. The High ImPact Team facilitates the meetings in your neighborhoods. The purpose of these meetings is to open the channels of communications between The Sheriff s Department and the entire community and to hear the concerns you have in your neighborhood. We hope to see all of you at these meetings. 3 Neighborhood Watch Startup Meeting for New Groups May 21, Monday 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Marconi Stationhouse, 2500 Marconi Ave, Community Room National Institute of Mental Health's National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day 2011 Panel Webcast on May 9, Need facts/data: As part of Awareness Day 2011, NIMH sponsored a webcast panel of children's mental health experts who discussed the science of children's mental health. How You Can Be A Hero of Hope What is a Hero of Hope? A Hero of Hope is a caring adult who provides a child or youth with kind of positive support and influence that can help the young person develop or enhance resilience. You may not think one person can make a difference, but the data shows otherwise. For children and youth receiving services through SAMHSA grantees, data show that the effects of trauma can be reduced when there is a connection with a supportive adult. Through this connection, children are much more likely to: show improved behavioral and emotional skills show improved academic performance engaged in less criminal behavior had greater ease with building attachments Reactions to traumatic experiences vary by individual, and with help from families, friends, providers, and other Heroes of Hope, children can enhance their resilience so they can be prepared for future challenges. You may not know whether a child or youth has faced trauma; what you should know is that you really can make a difference just the same. You can be a Hero of Hope to a child or youth! If you only have a minute, be a Hero for a minute: Offer a word of encouragement or praise to a child or youth, especially one who has been bullied or feels alone. If you have an hour or two, be a Hero for a few hours: Coach a youth sports team, especially one that involves youth who may have a parent who has been deployed in the military. Volunteer at an organization that provides activities or mentoring for children or youth, especially youth whose families are in a homeless shelter. If you have longer, be someone's lifelong Hero: Resolve to be a continuing positive influence in the life of a child or youth, and touch base regularly just so they know you're there. You don't necessarily know whether someone has been through a traumatic experience, and you can be just the extra support a child or youth needs. Pledge to be a Hero of Hope for a child or youth in your life. 3

Value of volunteer service in Sacramento County during 2011 is a record-breaking $18 Million. Since 2004, more than 75,000 volunteers and interns have donated approximately six million hours of s ervice to Sacramento County. The monetary value is estimated at $113 million. 5 --Tuesday, August 7, NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to: Meet the newest neighbors and get the established neighbors together to talk about crime Share some food and talk about neighborhood concerns and have a Neighborhood Watch meeting Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods 'celebrate' NNO with a variety of events and activities such as: block parties cookouts visits from local Deputy Sheriffs parades flashlight walks contests youth programs NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. Plus, the benefits your community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night. Talk it up with your neighbors and plan your event.
