Dear Members of IAMM, I begin by wishing one and all in e IAMM family a very happy and fruitful May is year prove to be better an e be at you have had so far in life wi many happy and memorable reflections to fall back upon. I also take is opportunity to express my gratitude to e Executive Council members and e General Body for unanimously agreeing to beow e responsibility of such a preigious po on my shoulders. I am quite aware at is is no small honour and I accept it in all humility. I welcome all e new members of e E.C. and particularly congratulate ose who along wi me have been elected to shoulder fresh responsibilities. I ank e outgoing members for leaving behind a very congenial atmosphere and promise to take forward e good work done by my predecessors, many of whom were my teachers. The outgoing President, Dr.Reba Kunungo and her team have laid down andards at will have to be met wi, if not surpassed and I am sure at e new team will make all endeavours to do so. There have been many decisions taken at e E.C. and e G.B.M. which will need to be brought to eir logical conclusions. This year as per e decisions of e EC and e GBM, Dr. (Mrs.) Urmil Sharma has contributed towards e initution of e Be IAMM Junior Paper Award in e name of Dr.Kulbhushan Sharma, who was in 1976 not only one of e mo active Founder Members of e IAMM but also, till e end, remained a conant source of inspiration and a pillar of reng for e Association. Those who knew him will vouch for e fact at he was an excellent teacher, committed researcher and an able adminirator, whose life time mission was to take Microbiology in India to global andards and beyond. On behalf of all e members I express my gratitude to Dr. (Mrs.) Urmil Sharma for is geure. For any organisation to progress we need aspirations and inspirations, a vision at can be translated into a goal wi relentless focus, deep devotion and hard work. The goal of e association is to ensure eical practice in providing e be of services wi andard procedures bo inside and outside e laboratory, encourage more and more people to join e speciality and promote research at would benefit patients and humanity at large. We need to be enusiaic, exhilarated and energised. I would welcome any suggeions from all quarters, from my seniors and oer members of great wisdom and would be happy if e younger generation sheds its inhibition and comes for wi whatever is ere in eir minds. It may or may not be accepted but I promise to take it up for discussion. I am aware at sometimes suggeions from lea expected quarters get e be response. Therefore, I want e younger generation to apply eir mind and put for eir problems/suggeions. (contd. on page 2) 1

2 I also wish to inspire e younger generation to come forward and join e speciality of Microbiology. It is e only speciality on e pre and para-clinical side at is conantly dealing wi e living organisms and not wi its results in e form of dead tissue. Only living creature can pose challenges and we have witnessed em in e recent pa in e form of many emerging infections. To ose who want to transform life into an exciting adventure and discovery, Microbiology is e platform. Microbiologis have e large share of Nobel Prizes. There is no reason why we cannot add to at share. Those who attended e MICROCON 2013 at Hyderabad will and by me in congratulating Dr.V.Lakshmi and her team for eir commendable achievements in satiating not only our appetite but also our brains by providing vibrant academic milieu to swim in. The next conference is being organised by Dr.Bharti Malhotra at Jaipur. She is already a ep ahead and has circulated e fir brochure inviting everyone to attend. I add to her invitation. The awardee will receive e award at e valedictory function of e IAMM. 6. Mumbai-Belgaum Prize for e be poer in Medical Mycobacteriology. 6. Belgaum-Mumbai Prize for e be paper in Bacteriology. Nominations are invited for e above said prizes. Abracts for e award papers from intereed members mu be submitted to e IAMM Secretaries office on or before July These will be subjected to peer review and only selected abracts will be allowed to be presented as a paper at e respective oral/ poer sessions. 4 Minutes of GB meeting held on November 2013 at NIMS Hyderabad At e outset, Dr. Mahantesh B Nagamoti, Secretary of IAMM, welcomed all e members and Pa Presidents of e association to e General Body Meeting at Novotel HICC rd Hyderabad on 23 Nov He requeed e President of IAMM Dr. Reba Kanungo to chair e meeting and conduct e proceedings. The president called e meeting to order 1. Minutes of e General Body Meeting held at Lady Hardinge Medical College 2012 was read and confirmed by e GB (proposed by Dr. V Ravi and seconded by Dr. A Chowdhary). 2. IAMM Secretary report for 2013: Dr. M B Nagamoti presented e secretary's report and expenditure report for e year. It was accepted by e GB (proposed by Dr. Satish Patil and seconded by Dr. Arunaloke C) 3. IJMM Editor's annual report and expenditure: Dr. Arti Kapil presented e report and announced e name of e award winners for e be published papers (IAMM 2012). Dr. Ravi congratulated e editorial team for improving e financial and publications andards. He suggeed to present e full report and also to add photo quiz for betterment of e journal. He also requeed e editor to contact oer fellow editors for adopting measures towards furer improvement of IJMM. Dr. Priya Abraham and Chand Wattal requeed to publish IJMM supplements and special issues respectively. Editor welcomed and accepted ese suggeions. (Proposed by Dr. S Sharma, seconded by Dr. Priya Abraham) 4. IAMM Treasurer's report: Dr Deepak M, IAMM Treasurer made e Power point presentations of e audited report of e association for e year (proposed by Dr. V Ravi and seconded by Dr. A Chakraborty). Col. Nagendra enquired about e unaudited amount and e treasurer replied at he will present e same along wi e updated report in e for coming IAMM 2014 conference. Dr Arunaloke C congratulated him and suggeed e GB at IAMM should have permanent office and permanent Assiant Treasurer in order to reamline e IAMM accounts. Many members supported is view and furer added at e Treasurer's office should be located in a metro city. GB accepted e suggeion and proposed e name of Dr BS Sherwal was requeed to shoulder is responsibility. Dr. Sherwal accepted e responsibility and said at he will art e office on rental basis and en look for a permanent office around Delhi. Dr. Deepak M, suggeed e GB at around 25 lakhs can be used for e office conruction from e treasurer's office. Dr Sherwal proposed e name of his colleague Dr. Sonal Saxena (Delhi) for e As Treasurer po. The GB approved e same (proposed by Dr. Savitri Sharma seconded by Dr. Arunaloke C). 5. EQAS report: Dr. Mary Jesudasan read e EQAS report and informed e GB at around 800 labs are participating in IAMM EQAS. The GB congratulated Dr. Chand Wattal for eablishing EQAS centre at New Delhi, which will cover Nor and Nor-Eaern ates of India. Dr. Chand Wattal anked e GB and promised to art EQAS centre at New Delhi from Jan 2014 onwards. EQAS committee proposed to increase e subscription from Rs to Rs The GB approved e same (proposed by Col. Nagendra and seconded by Dr. V Ravi). Members requeed to add a Feedback Form along wi queionnaire to all e centers. Dr. Rama Chowdhary proposed to include EQAS for anaerobic bacteria. She said at she will initiate is in collaboration wi Dr Chand Wattal. President assured her to consider e issue. 6. IAMM Symposium: Secretary read out e various topics proposed by e members and ey were analysed in leng and finally e topic Role of Microbiologi in public heal was approved and e Moderator for is was Dr. Chand Wattal. 7. Outsourcing conference: Dr. Abhay C suggeed to accept grant of funds from e corporate companies for hoing e conference like oer national associations' conferences. He also suggeed to formulate e rategy for e management of funds. President Dr. Reba Kanungo informed e GB at as is issue was discussed in detail and was approved by EC members and she requeed GB to analyse e same before consideration. Dr Arunaloke C opined to invite for bidding of e conference while e President formed a committee consiing of Dr. V Ravi, Dr. Abhay Chowdhary, Dr. B. L Sherwal, Dr. Arunaloke C along wi Secretary to work on it. This was approved by GB (proposed by Dr. Anuj Kagal and seconded by Dr. B L Sherwal). 8. Student symposium: Secretary described about his difficulty to get e topic for IAMM udent symposium 2013, even after announcing it in e news letter. Considering is,gb proposed e Dr. Vijay Kumar of Mysore as a coordinator for IAMM udent symposium He has readily accepted e responsibility. 9. Selection of Venue for e IAMM conference 2014 and 2015: G B approved e reque of Dr. Bharati Malhotra of SMS Medical College Jaipur regarding hoing 2014 conference. Dr. Reba Kanungo, President IAMM has handover e letter of approval to Dr. Bharati Malhotra. Dr. Harish of JIPMER Puduchery explained at JIPMER is celebrating golden jubilee year in In view of is, he requeed e GB for hoing 2015 IAMM conference at JIPMER Puducherry. GB approved e same and asked him to submit e letter rough Dean JIPMER to e Secretary IAMM. 10. Election of office bearers: Dr. M B Nagamoti informed e house at Dr. Vijay Kumar of Mysore (EC Member) and Dr. D K Mendiratta (Treasurer) completed eir tenures. The GB appreciated eir role as office bearers of IAMM for 3 Years and anked em for eir valuable inputs. The 4

Dr. Sherwal has contacted e family members after e EC meeting and ey have agreed for e proposal and will donate Rs. 2.5 laks for e same. (Proposed by Dr. C S Patil and seconded by Dr. D S Agarwal) b. Secretary has received a reque letter from Dr. Pronabeshwar Chakraborty, regarding award for e be published paper on e subject of Enterobacteriaceae. The EC and GB did not approve e reque. Inead, GB felt at e travel grant for short/long term in India and abroad can be given to e young scienti for (1mon/3mon) training in reputed labs. Accepted by GB. Dr. C S Patil raised e doubt regarding acceptance of IAMM suggeions by MCI. Dr. B L Sherwal explained about present inable atus of MCI. d. Website Maintenance: President informed to GB at, Dr. V Balaji of CMC Vellore and Joint Secretary have been approved as e In charge officers for IAMM website maintenance for two years by EC. This responsibility was accepted and GB approved e same. MICROCON 2013: XXXVII NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF INDIAN ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGISTS EVENT REPORT MICROCON-2013, e premier Annual National Conference of Medical Microbiologis was organized by e Department of Microbiology, Nizam's Initute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), at Novotel, HICC, Hyderabad from 20 November to 24 November Dr. V Lakshmi, Professor and Head of Microbiology was e Organizing Secretary. His Excellency, e Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. ESL Narasimhan, formally inaugurated e event on 21 November Dr.VM Katoch, e Director General of ICMR, was e Gue of Honor. The eme of MICROCON 2013 was Clinical & Applied Microbiology Future Trends to emphasize e need to bridge education, research and practice to rough collaboration to ensure effective control of infectious disease prevention and grow across e globe. As pre-conference events, a CME on Case udies in Infectious diseases at NIMS and a total of nine workshops were held at various hospitals in e city. Sessions and topics included, advances in HIV diagnosis, full Microbiology lab automation, active learning rategies for microbiology, Molecular Microbiology, infection control, scientific writing, making of a microbiologi, CSSD and Ocular Microbiology. The conference was a successful one wi a large participation of over 1150 delegates. The conference program included ree orations, parallel award sessions, two symposia, a mini workshop by e American Society of Microbiologis (ASM), one plenary Session by Dr. Madhukar Pai on TB and 30 scientific lectures by eminent and experienced scientis and clinicians (International Speakers - 11 and National - 19), 506 paper presentations (32 oral and 474 poer) by young Microbiologis and 26 inrument/manufacturers exhibits. The Student symposium was on education and late research in Medical Microbiology. The symposium on public heal response to epidemics and emerging infections by eminent scientis was well received. 8 Notification of Elections of Executive Council (EC) Members of e IAMM. The Executive Council of e IAMM has ONE vacancy in e year 2013.As per e conitution of e IAMM, notice is hereby issued by e Secretary IAMM, inviting e nominations to ese position in EC of e IAMM. The following rules apply as per Conitutions of IAMM.(details visit IAMM website) Rules : a) Members, who have already served e Executive Council of e IAMM in e pa are not eligible for reelection until after e lapse of two years, b) Members, who have completed five years as Life members of e association are eligible and c) Any conteant found advertising for elections in any form shall be disqualified.( GB Decision at New Delhi 2012) Nominations for e memberships of Executive Council may be made by any two founder/life members and shall be sent to Secretary's office. Such nominations mu be accompanied by written undertaking from e nominee at he/she is willing to serve Executive Council.
