1 National Rural Heal Students Network Executive Report Hello everyone! Welcome to e July edition of e NRHSN Update. Wi e cold weaer now settled in and exam period at its peak, we d like to gently remind everyone at amongst e chaos of university study and extra-curricular involvement, it s of primary importance to take care of yourself and make sure you re doing ok! We have been a busy exec over e last mon. Heidi and Tara headed to Adelaide Heidi to present on e NRHSN s activities at e Future Heal Leaders (FHL) stakeholder forum, and Tara to represent e NRHSN at e Rural Doctors Workforce Agency (RDWA) conference. Tara and Heidi also represented e NRHSN at e RDWA Awards dinner, where RDWA recognised some truly inspirational long-serving rural doctors. Jerry represented e NRHSN at e Rural Doctors Association of Queensland (RDAQ) conference in Brisbane. All of ese events proved a success and an inspiration for ose in attendance. We look forward to continuing a strong relationship wi ese organsations into e future, particularly in e support of FHL as ey become an independent organisation (after being an initiative of Heal Workforce Australia). The network as a whole has been alive wi activity a number of visits have been made to e Norern Territory as part of e Norern Territory Medicare Local s Rural High School Visit Program, e Go Rural program administrered by RHWA, and some indigenous festival visits by clubs emselves. Rural high school visits and clinical skills events were numerous across e country, and e wonderful world of rural heal has now reached more students, wi a spike in memberships in e last mon. Keep up e good work everyone! 2 Portfolio Reports Allied Heal Portfolio Keep an eye out for e student networking event at e SARRAH conference in September. The allied heal portfolio will be running is event, and we would love to see as many students ere as possible to join e student dinner, especially SARRAH scholarship holders. Please encourage your club members to apply for CoNS funding in order to attend is awesome conference! Indigenous Heal Portfolio indigenous_heal@nrhsn.org.au NAIDOC week July. NAIDOC week is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise e contributions at Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Keep an eye out for furer social media tips from e portfolio. Medical Portfolio medical@nrhsn.org.au The final stages of developing e MRBS and BMP survey are well underway. This members survey is set to be released in e coming weeks and presents an opportunity for NRHSN members to put forward eir oughts on e MRBS and BMP scholarship schemes. Keep an eye out for is one! The portfolio have also been busy as part of e GPSN Working Group, and were also represented by David at e RDAQ conference in Brisbane in June. PROVINCIAL SURGEONS OF AUSTRALIA CONFERENCE, DARWIN, August The 50 anniversary conference will be a collaboration between e PSA and e College Trauma Committee/s and Indigenous Heal Committee. This year s conference will feature e Trauma Symposium on Saturday 23 August Injury in Indigenous Populations - Learning from each oer. Scholarships st CRANAplus Undergraduate Scholarships closing 31 July These scholarships provide $1,000 of financial assistance to a student interested in working remotely, to assist wi e cost of a remote placement. To be eligible you must be a CRANAplus student member. NSW Rural Resident Medical Officer Cadetship closing 25 August 12 cadetships are available to medical students interested in undertaking a medical career in rural New Sou Wales. Cadets receive up to $15,000 per year for e final two years of eir medical degree and spend two out of eir first ree post-graduate years in a rural NSW Hospital west of e Great Dividing Range. NSW RDN Rural Resident Medical Officer Indigenous Cadetship closing 25 August Up to two cadetships are offered to Indigenous medical students. $30,000 during degree, spend two out of eir first ree post-graduate years in a rural NSW Hospital west of e Great Dividing Range. Western Australia: Country allied heal student travel grants WA Country Heal Service and e Mental Heal Commission are pleased to provide grants to undergraduate and graduate entry students to assist wi travel costs for country placements of four weeks or more. Rural vocational experiences are an important part of e training program and Rural Heal West is pleased to work wi bo agencies to support students undertaking rural placements. 5 Oer Opportunities RDAA Medical Student of e Year Award 2014 entries close Monday 7 July Are you a medical student who is dedicated to rural heal and are a great member of your Rural Heal Club? If so, en why not apply for e RDAA Medical Student of e Year Award?
