Thomas H. Winters, MD, FacoeM Chief Medical Officer and President, OEHN An introduction or refresher course that provides an overview of medical surveillance and monitoring, including a brief discussion of human biohazards and biosafety programs, post-offer preplacement exams, serum banking, internal blood donor programs, vaccines, and post-exposure prophylaxis and treatment. Basic Microbiology/Infectious Disease Robert Siegel, MD Associate Professor, Stanford University Medical School The more that occupational health and biosafety professionals know about the diseases with which researchers are working, the better they will be able to protect them. This session, taught by an instructor who has won Stanford s highest award for excellence in teaching will cover the basic science of emerging infectious diseases, influenza, HIV and lentiviral vectors. photo courtesy Fred Murphy and Sylvia Whitfield H o t e l i n f o r m a t i o n The Hotel Marlowe is a four-diamond boutique hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on the Charles River and across from downtown Boston. 4 Monday, June 11, :30 Welcome/Introductions Mary Ann Sondrini, EdM Executive Director, Eagleson Institute James M. Welch Executive Director, Elizabeth R. Griffin Research Foundation 8:50 Bio/Chemical Exposure Risks Panelists: Elizabeth Gilman Duane, MS, RBP, CBSP Associate Director, EH&S and Biosafety Officer, Pfizer, Inc. Thomas H. Winters, MD, FacoeM Chief Medical Officer and President, OEHN Lois Zitzow, MS, DVM, DACLAM Clinical Veterinarian, Animal Resources Center, Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, The University of Chicago Research involving hazardous materials administered to animals, such as chemotherapeutic drugs, MPTP, and RU486; biological toxins; and vivarium decontamination chemicals pose problems for environmental health and safety (EH&S) and occupational health professionals. For many of these substances there are no established protocols or great differences in dealing with compounds of known and unknown toxicity. This roundtable session will use selected examples to focus on the roles of the veterinarian, EH&S and occupational health professionals, the benefits of a team approach, and the methodology that can be used to address issues. Topics to be addressed include the risk assessment process, the need for balancing safety with the research goals, and the hierarchy of controls in the laboratory and vivarium settings. 10:00 BREAK 10:30 The Science of Viral Vectors: What We Do and Don t Know Robert Siegel, MD Associate Professor, Stanford University Medical School Many of the viral vectors in use today such as replication competent lentivirus vectors, non-replication competent lentivirus pseudotyped with rabies viral glycoproteins; replication incompetent lentivirus vectors carrying oncogenes, attenuated vaccinia vectors, and Adeno-associated viral vectors are derived from pathogenic viruses that are themselves still the subject of much research. This session will describe what we know and what we still don t know about these viruses. 11:15 Occupational Health Considerations for Working with Viral Vectors in Research Laboratories Gary Fujimoto, MD Palo Alto Medical Foundation This session will examine appropriate pre-exposure screening, immune surveillance, and post-exposure prophylaxis for viral vectors commonly used in research laboratories. 12:00 LUNCH 1:00 Mock IBC Moderator: Elizabeth Gilman Duane, MS, RBP, CBSP Associate Director, EH&S and Biosafety Officer, Pfizer, Inc. 3:00 BREAK IBC Members: Robert Siegel, MD Associate Professor, Stanford University Medical School Lois Zitzow, MS, DVM, DACLAM Clinical Veterinarian, Animal Resources Center, Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, The University of Chicago Gregg Kasting, MD Director of Occupational Health, Amgen Karen Byers, MS, RBP, CBSP Biosafety Officer, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Mary J. Corrigan, CIH, SM Associate Director, Harvard University Environmental Health Safety & Emergency Management Two case studies one involving viral vectors in animals and another involving vaccinia will be presented. For each, an explanation of the basic science and the research protocols will be followed by a discussion involving the IBC members and the audience. 3:30 Occupational Health Risks of Nanotechnology Michael J. Ellenbecker, ScD, CIH Professor, Department of Work Environment and Director, Toxics Use Reduction Institute, University of Massachusetts Lowell The use of nanoparticles in biological research is becoming more common, yet occupational health physicians and biological safety officers may not be completely aware of the potential hazards posed by their use. This presentation will focus on what current research tells us about the effects exposure to nanoparticles may have on the body, and how to deal with the risks of this exposure. 4:30 Questions and Open Discussion This session provides an opportunity to ask questions of all speakers in the previous sessions, as well as exchange information and ideas. 5:00 CONCLUSION 6:30 DINNER
5 Tuesday, June 12, :30 AAALAC s New Occupational Health Requirements Christian E. Newcomer, VMD, DACLAM Executive Director, AAALAC International The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) has recently adopted the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Eighth Edition as a primary standard for accreditation. The Guide revised and expanded its occupational health recommendations, which will be detailed in this session. The information presented will be valuable for individuals from institutions that will be hosting an AAALAC site visit in the near future, or anyone who wants to know what an international organization regards as the key components of a sound occupational health program for an institution involved in research animal care and use. 9:15 Prevention of Laboratory Animal Allergy Gregg M. Stave, MD, JD, MPH Assistant Consulting Professor, Department of Community and Family Medicine, Duke University Medical Center This presentation will address approaches to dealing with laboratory animal allergy, a common but preventable occupational illness. 10:00 BREAK 10:30 Hot Topics Moderator: T. Warner Hudson, MD, FacoeM, FAAFP Medical Director, Occupational Health Facility, UCLA Health System This session will include a variety of hot topics and items of particular interest, such as the use of IGRA TB testing versus tuberculin skin testing in employee TB surveillance, and issues involving research involving H5N1, and the use of carfentanyl. 12:00 LUNCH 1:00 Employment Law Issues and Biological Exposures Carolyn S. Langer, MD, JD, MPH Medical Director of Medical Management and Quality, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Working in biomedical research settings and exposures to biological agents raise a number of employment law questions. This session will review the law that holds the answers to such questions as: Can receiving a vaccination or participating in a medical surveillance program be a condition of employment? Can workers decline a vaccination or surveillance exam and still work with an agent? Who decides what is sufficiently safe the institution or the worker? When can an institution ask about employee personal health information, and who at an institution might have a legitimate need to know it? Who owns serum specimens that are part of a serum banking program? 2:00 BREAK 2:30 Employment Law Case Studies Panelists: Gregg Kasting, MD Director of Occupational Health, Amgen Carolyn S. Langer, MD, JD, MPH Medical Director of Medical Management and Quality, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Thomas H. Winters, MD, FacoeM Chief Medical Officer and President, OEHN The topic of employment law and biological exposures will continue. After discussion of panel-developed case studies dealing with the employment law implications of research with vaccinia and influenza, attendee generated case studies and questions will be addressed. 4:00 Wrap-up and Ideas for Future Directions Attendees are encouraged to share suggestions and ideas for future programs and ways to further communication among those dealing with occupational health in the biological research setting. 4:30 CONCLUSION R E g i s t r a t i o N i n f o r m a t i o n COLLOQUIUM FEES: Colloquium fees include attendance at colloquium sessions, dinner on Monday evening, and lunches on Monday and Tuesday.
