2 WELCOME 2013 UNIVERSITY BIOSAFETY WEEK PRESENTATIONS Dear Colleagues, It is with great pleasure that I introduce the University s Biosafety Program and Biosafety Website, which will be launched on 23 October. These are important resources which will strengthen the foundations of Victoria University. Our Biosafety resources are designed to: protect University personnel, the community and the environment from biological agents and toxins that are stored or handled within our laboratories and clinical facilities; reduce the risk of unintentional release of, or exposure to, biological agents and toxins; comply with all legal requirements and meet the relevant Australian Standards, Codes and Regulations applicable to the biological agents and toxins; and inform all University personnel, relevant third parties and individuals of their obligations with regard to biosafety. The implementation of proactive biosafety policies and programs at VU, including an internal lab certification program, will ensure better and safer labs. All personnel who work with biological agents and toxins must ensure they are familiar with these resources and with their obligations. To celebrate the launch we will be hosting Biosafety Week from October. The week promises to provide a range of exciting opportunities to educate and inspire researchers, students and lab support staff. It will also provide lab personnel with an invaluable networking opportunity to share and learn from each other. The official program for the week is attached. To secure your place, please the Biosafety team on ibc@vu.edu.au by Friday 11 October. I extend my warmest congratulations to the University s Biosafety Committee and the dedicated staff within the Office for Research biosafety team, particularly Dr Faten Zaibak & Ms Elizabeth Hill, for all their work in the development of the University s biosafety resources and the Biosafety week activities. I would also like to formally welcome and congratulate Professor Greg Blatch on his appointment as the Chair of the University s Biosafety Committee. I look forward to seeing you at the Biosafety Week events. Regards Warren Professor Warren Payne Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Research Training) Victoria University Phone BIOSAFETY WEEK 21 st 25 th OCTOBER VICTORIA UNIVERSITY
