No. Title Credits/Mode I. Bulletin Description Includes CPR and first aid care. American Red Cross certification for first aid and CPR can be earned. II. Prerequisites None III. Rationale for Course Level IV. Textbooks and Other Materials to be Furnished by the Student 1. Text: American Red Cross. First Aid: Responding to Emergencies, 3rd Ed., Staywell, Optional: one roller bandage (2-4 gauze or elastic (ace wrap) one triangular bandage (made from 40 square of cloth cut diagonally) IV. Special Requirements of the Course The multiple-choice exam will be taken at the CLAS testing center. Part of these tests will be used to determine eligibility for CPR certification and qualification for first aid certification. V. General Methodology Lecture, demonstration, audiovisuals, skill practice, and problem solving.
2 VI. Course Objectives After completing this course, the student will be able to: 1. Understand the basic structures, functions and interactions of human body systems, and how health behaviors impact them. [1.1.1] Recognize the interrelationship of body systems and are able to explain what happens in the body if one or more body systems fail to function properly. 2. Demonstrate strategies used to recognize, avoid and manage health and safety risks.[1.2.2] Recognize the signals of a possible heart attack, and describe how to care for someone who is experiencing persistent chest pain. Identify and care for choking and other breathing emergencies. Identify the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease and describe how to control them. Identify the signals of cardiac arrest, and demonstrate how to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until advanced emergency medical care arrives. Identify life-threatening bleeding, and demonstrate how to control it. Identify the signals of shock, and describe how to minimize the effects of shock. Identify the signals of various soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, and demonstrate how to care for them. Identify the signals of medical emergencies, and describe care for the medical emergencies. Describe when and how to move victims. Be familiar with procedures for assisting with childbirth and caring for both the mother and the newborn following childbirth. Plan how to respond to and provide care for a person in a situation where help is delayed. 3. Determine the availability of information, personnel, time, and equipment needed to implement the program for a given student population. [4.3.3] 4. Match a health need with valid information sources.[7.1.1] 5. Access valid information sources. [7.1.2] 6. Provide guidance to students for selecting valid health information and services. [7.3.2] 7. Assemble educational material of value to the health of children, youth and families. [7.4.1] 8. Explain how the EMS system works and the citizen responder s role in the EMS system. 9. Recognize differing needs of diverse groups of people and apply special considerations required in an emergency.

4 IX. Evaluation NOTE: YOU MUST PASS BOTH THE MIDTERM AND FINAL EXAMS WITH A SCORE OF 60% OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO PASS THE COURSE. The following will be used be used for determining the grade you earn for the course: Lab Quizzes seven; each worth 8 points = 56 points 22% Final Lab Quiz = 12 points 5% Midterm Exam = 50 points 20% Final Exam = 40 points 16% Authentic Assessment 20 points 8% CPR Practical Exam = 40 points 16% First Aid Practical Exam = 25 points 10% Participation/Attitude = 7 points 3% 250 points possible 100% (Added Authentic Assessment to Evaluation % as required by MDE assessment matrix) Authentic Assessment Teaching strategy K Students will access first aid curricula, internet sites, and course materials to develop a teaching strategy for one first aid/emergency procedure for a specific age groups (elementary, middle or high school). Strategy must be ageappropriate, designed to meet the needs of specifically stated age group. Listed with the lesson/strategy will be information/content and skills taught, time needed for delivery and assessment of learning, and equipment needed. Target age group will be provided with at least two valid extension internet sources to enhance learning. Using first aid curricula, internet sites, and course materials, students will develop a teaching strategy for one first aid/emergency procedure for a specific age groups (elementary, middle or high school). Strategy must be age-appropriate, designed to meet the needs of specifically stated age group. Listed with the lesson/strategy will be: information/content skills taught, time needed for delivery assessment of learning, equipment needed source for information/lesson sited provide at least two, age appropriate, valid extension internet sources for target audience.
