1 Paediatric First Aid Level 3 This qualification provides theoretical and practical training in emergency first aid techniques that are specific to infants aged under 1, and children aged from 1 year old to the onset of puberty. Learners undertaking this qualification will be able to provide support to the paediatric first aider to maintain the welfare of infants and children. Learners will become familiar with the role of the paediatric first aider and be able to assess and react appropriately to an emergency situation, such as a child or an infant who is unresponsive, has an airway obstruction, has breathing difficulties or is suffering from shock or anaphylaxis: This qualification consists of one mandatory unit and is typically delivered over a period of 1 day with a minimum contact time of 6 hours. All successful students will be issued with an Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate. Introduction Role of the Paediatric First Aider Primary survey Secondary assessment Resuscitation and epilepsy Airway obstruction Wounds, bleeding and shock Anaphylaxis Assessment: Practical assessments and a multiple choice exam paper will need to be passed in order to gain this qualification Certification: A certificate which is valid for 3 years is awarded to all successful students

2 First Aid at Work FAW This First Aid at Work FAW (3 Day Course) is ideal for those already working or preparing to work within industry wishing to become a qualified First Aider in the workplace for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (NI) The recommended course duration is 3 days and the following topics covered including: the roles and responsibilities of the First Aider: assessing an incident, recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness, assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury and illness, chest injuries, spinal injuries and anaphylaxis. Understand the role of the first aider including reference to the use of available equipment and the need for recording incidents and actions. Understand the importance of basic hygiene in first-aid procedures. Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency. Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious and/or in seizure. Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding and/or in shock. Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking. Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries. Recognising the presence of major illness and applying general first aid principles in its management. Soft tissue injuries. Injuries to bones including suspected spinal injuries. Chest injuries. Burns and scalds. Eye injuries including how to irrigate an eye. Sudden poisoning and anaphylactic shock. Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries. Assessment: Practical assessments and a multiple choice exam paper will need to be passed in order to gain this qualification Certification: A certificate which is valid for 3 years is awarded to all successful students

3 Emergency First Aid at Work EFAW This Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is recommended for nominated emergency first aiders in workplaces with lower health and safety risks. It is ideal for smaller workplaces that present few health and safety risks where a nominated or appointed person is required to take charge in the event of an illness or accident. This course complies with current UK and European resuscitation guidelines. We guarantee compliance, quality and assurance that this course is fit for purpose and recognised by industry regulators. Understand the role of the first aider including reference to: the importance of preventing cross infection the need for recording incidents and actions Use of available equipment Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency. Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious(including seizures) Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters) Assessment: Practical assessments and a multiple choice exam paper will need to be passed in order to gain this qualification Certification: A certificate which is valid for 3 years is awarded to all successful students

4 First Aid at Work Refresher FAWR Our First Aid at Work Refresher (FAWR) updates the first aid skills for people who need to renew their statutory first aid at work certificate and whose existing certificate is still in date. Who should attend? This First Aid at Work Refresher course is for people wishing to renew a valid first aid at work certificate. Please note: If you allow your certificate to expire. You will then have 28 days after the expiry date to book onto this course or you will have to attend the First Aid at Work (3 day). The First Aid at Work Refresher (FAWR) course includes an update of first aid knowledge and skills and a revision of workplace requirements which include: Understand the importance of basic hygiene in first-aid procedures. Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency. Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious and/or in seizure. Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding and/or in shock. Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking. 5 First Aid Annual Refresher Course First Aid Annual Refresher Course is strongly recommended by the HSE for all qualified first aiders whether it is the First Aid at Work Course or Emergency First Aid at Work Course you sat this course should be in your diary every year. It is seen that this will help qualified first-aiders maintain all their basic skills and keep up to date with any changes to first aid procedures. 6 Basic Life Support Automated External Defibrillator The course is suitable for anyone, whether or not they have received some form of first aid training but may need to use a defibrillator. By the end of this course, students will know why and how a defibrillator works and will also be able to successfully carry out basic life support when in an emergency situation. Update and reflect on the Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines for Basic Life Support (BLS) The ABCDE approach Risks to the rescuer Respiratory and cardiac arrest Recovery position Choking Lay person -v- healthcare professional Professional and legal responsibilities Practice with manikins Heart Conditions and treatment of an unconscious casualty Basic life support & CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) UK Resuscitation Council Guidelines Safe use of an AED Understand the principles of BLS and relate them to the work environment How to safely operate an AED

7 Anaphylaxis & EpiPen Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can develop rapidly and should always be treated as a medical emergency. This Anaphylaxis & EpiPen training course is suitable for anyone who needs to be aware of the diagnosis and how to treat someone who may suffer from an anaphylactic shock. It is a must for those involved in the administration of rescue medication. Accident prevention (understanding the difference between an intolerance and allergy) Recording incidents and accidents Planning for medical emergencies Communication and casualty care Dealing with the unconscious casualty Resuscitation Severe Allergic reactions Anaphylaxis signs, symptom and treatment Auto-injector Anapen, Jextpen and Epipen (Practical demonstrations) Primary Survey

8 Safeguarding of Vulnerable Children This Safeguarding of Vulnerable Children training course is a mandatory for anyone who works with children. An ideal half day introduction to the basics of child protection. The course looks at what child abuse is and how to spot potential signs of abuse. The course raises awareness to delegates as to the long term harm caused to child victims and the need for us to be aware of signs and symptoms and when and how to take action. Who is this course for? Anyone who works with children: for instance, project workers, youth departments, youth programmes, family support, hostel workers, child minders, parent and toddler groups, play groups, volunteers, teachers and anyone else who wants to understand the importance of child protection awareness. Upon completion students will be able to define child protection, look at the different types and signs of abuse including neglect and how to responding, record & report. They will know who to approach, who to report to and what actions to take to best safeguard the children. Subjects covered include: Child protection defined Legislation Types of neglect and abuse Warning signs and symptoms & consideration of other possibilities Key behavioural changes Managing disclosure- recording and reporting How to react and listen Whistle blowing Who needs to know and who can help Case studies Assessment: The tutor will assess understanding and involvement of all students throughout the duration of the course. Certification: On successful completion of the course learners will be awarded a certificate which is valid for one year.

9 Food Hygiene & Safety This is a Food Hygiene & Safety training course for all staff working in and around food who work in a health & social care setting.
