5 COURSE INFORMATION Initiator: Shawn Lawless Date of proposal to Curriculum Sub-Committee: Feb. 3, 2012 Effective Semester/Year Fall Spring 2012 Summer Prefix & Number: EMS 125A Full Title: (100 character limit) Emergency Medical Responder Short Title: (30 character limit) EMR Catalog Course Description: Introductory course for the student who aspires to become a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Responder. Student learning will focus on initial assessment and patient stabilization, proper use of equipment such as automatic external defibrillators, as well as legal issues, scope of practice, documentation, communication, and ambulance protocols. This course is designed to meet all State and National requirements and follows the current National Standard Curriculum and Arizona State Department of Health Services-EMS Division State Statutes to prepare in testing for EMR Level via the National Registry Written Examination. SUN Course Number: Credit Hours: 3 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 3 Prerequisite(s) 18 years of age at completion of the program Appropriate score on assessment test or successful completion of PCS 021 Completed Application Packet and acceptance into program. Students must also complete a physical, drug screening and background check prior to acceptance to the program. Student must also have proof of immunizations outlined in the application Packet. Co-requisite(s) None Intended Course Goals By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1. Describe the roles of EMS in the health care system. 2. Demonstrate the professional attributes expected of EMR s. 3. Perform the roles and responsibilities of an EMR with regard to personal safety and wellness, as well as the safety of others 4. Perform the duties of an EMR with regard for medical-legal and ethical issues, including functioning under medical direction and within the scope of practice. 5. Apply principles of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, life span development, and therapeutic communications to the assessment and management of patients.
6 6. Identify the need for and perform immediately lifesaving interventions to manage a patient s airway, breathing, and circulation. 7. Assess and manage patients of all ages with a variety of complaints, medical conditions, and traumatic injuries.
7 Course Competencies and Objectives By the end of the semester, students will be able to: Competency 1 Apply emergency medical responder level of care to patients with airway, breathing and cardiology problems. Objective 1.1 Provide ventilatory support for a patient Objective 1.2 Attempt to resuscitate a patient in cardiac arrest Objective 1.3 Provide care to a patient experiencing cardiovascular compromise Objective 1.4 Assess and provide care for respiratory distress in an adult patient Objective 1.5 Use oxygen delivery system components Objective 1.6 Perform techniques to assure a patent airway Objective 1.7 Assess and provide care to a patient experiencing non-traumatic chest pain/discomfort Objective 1.8 Provide post resuscitation care to a cardiac arrest patient Competency 2 Apply emergency medical responder level of care to patients with medical emergencies such as allergic reaction, overdose, near-drowning, altered mental status, diabetes, seizure, heat or cold exposure, behavioral problem or suspected communicable disease.
