It includes all aspects of pre-hospital basic life support as defined by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services curriculum for Emergency Medicine Technician Basic. Prerequisite: CPR certification at the Health Care Provider level. EMS - Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Clinical The clinical allows for observation in a program approved clinical/field setting. Page 1 of 7

2 Course Objectives To have students prepared to take EMT-B state written and practical exam and become a licensed EMT-B. EMT B s will be allowed to treat patients who are ill or injured at home, in doctor s offices emergency rooms and fire and rescue squads. Course Requirements For taking the STATE EMT-B Test 1. Copy of Photo ID 2. Copy of Professional Level CPR at the start of class and be current at state test date. 3. Rescue squad rotation sheet for 16 hours (make sure your hours and site are listed on your sheet and signed by you and your preceptor). 4. There is $50.00 fee for the State test: Payment can be made via the ODEMSA website after instructor approval has been granted. 5. Test sheet signed by instructor showing you have completed EMT-B course requirements. 6. Practical skill sheet signed by the instructor 7. State test is Thursday, TBA Written and Practical NOTE: ALL Paperwork AND Monies are due on or before MARCH 1, No more than 16 hours of class may have been missed. Location: To Be Announced (TBA) CLASS RULES NO Smoking NO Pagers or Mobile Devices (cell phones must be turned OFF during class; If left on vibrate, students still cannot answer until class break. 6 NO Food or Drink in the area NO children NO Cheating (if you give me a reason to believe you are cheating, you will be removed from class) Textbooks, Reference Materials, and Supplies Information: Brady: Prehospital Emergency Care (8 th edition) Notebook for tests and quizzes Blood pressure cuff and stethoscope Pens or pencils Evaluation of Learning and Grading Information You must make at least 80% on the class final exam Seven (7) class tests of 100 questions each Three (3) class quizzes All test and quizzes are weighted equally for final course grade Grading Scale: A B C D 67 - below F Instructor Expectations Have test completed and answer keys turned in on the date noted on the syllabi. 10 points are deducted from your grade for work that is turned in late. Quizzes are done in class. All grades will be totaled and averaged together for your final score. Page 6 of 7

7 Attendance Policy You can only miss 16 hours of class time and complete 16hours of practical time in order to take the state EMTB exam. 110 hours of lecture and 10 hours of clinical must be completed for the state office of EMS in order to complete the course and test. Students must sign in and out of class. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you will lose 30 minutes on missed time for class. Failure to sign in or out, will result in you be counted as absent. Students may make up missed work by turning in test at next class date, but grade will be lowered by 10 points for each class date your test is due. Student Conduct Policy Students must come prepared for class: textbook, notebook, pertinent handouts, pen A plagiarized assignment will receive a grade of zero and an (F) for the course grade Students absent from class must do any assignments assigned during the class from which they were absent. Call a friend if you are absent. Students must conduct themselves in a professional manner appropriate to a classroom setting. Students must treat all members of the class with respect If you feel harassed, report your concerns to me. As a courtesy to others, please turn off pagers, cell phones and other noisemakers before entering the classroom. Inclement Weather Contact New Kent Fire-Rescue for any class being canceled due to weather. New Kent Fire- Rescue will be notified no later than 4:00 PM (16:00 hours).
