2 Course Description This course will focus on health and physical assessment skills, documentation, interpersonal skills, normal aging and cultural competence with emphasis on clinical decision-making. The student is expected to be able to integrate pre-entry knowledge from the behavioral, natural and social sciences as well as previous clinical practice applied to both the art and science of nursing. This course contains both theory and clinical practicum components. The content is devoted to health care concepts and a practicum for Registered Nurses seeking degree completion or Registered Nurses seeking advanced education that have not had a free-standing physical assessment course. Required Textbook Seidel, H.M., Ball, J.W., Dains, J.E., & Benedict, G.W. (2006). Mosby s guide to physical examination (6th ed.). St. Louis: Mosby. * Be sure you purchase a new textbook, with the user guide passcode for the online modules. Required Materials You are required to have a computer or one available to you to participate in this course. Hardware and software requirements: An Internet Browser such as Mozilla, Firefox or Internet Explorer Computer with internet capability 56k modem or higher High Speed Internet connection Microsoft Office 2003 Computer Virus Protection package such as Norton (or student choice) that is kept updated Course Objectives At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate skills in comprehensive health assessment of the adult. 2. Demonstrate purposive interaction and communication skills. 3. Demonstrate documentation of the nursing process. 4. Apply concepts of aging to a functional assessment of the aging individual. 5. Apply concepts of cultural diversity in assessment of individuals. 6. Provide a safe, competent environment for patients and their families at all times. Page 2 of 10

3 Learning Methodologies As adult learners, it is expected that students will do relevant reading and study each week on the topic areas identified on the course calendar. Faculty directed readings and web links will be provided for specific content areas and will be found in ANGEL. Students are also expected to search relevant and up-to-date health care literature and share findings with peers and faculty in the weekly discussion. This on-line course is built on a weekly framework of material including: overview and introduction to the weeks content, objectives, textbook readings, required reading (external links), Mosby history & physical assessment on-line modules (power point slides, image collection, interactive exercises, web links, review questions), quizzes, weekly reaction/discussion question and exams. In addition, case studies and other creative assignments may be utilized throughout the course. This course is not based on a self-paced learning model. Although assignments may be completed at any time during the week they are due, ALL materials need to be posted by 2355 (11:55 pm Eastern Standard Daylight Savings Time) on Saturday evening of each week. Students are expected to be active participants in the ANGEL discussion. Active participation (engagement) is an expectation for all students. Parameters and guidelines for participation can be found under Course Documents in ANGEL. The clinical practicum portion of this course requires a written agreement between a preceptor and the student for a minimum of 63 practice hours during the semester. Students are responsible for locating a preceptor with the following minimal credentials: BSN prepared Registered Nurse; MSN prepared and nationally certified Nurse Practitioner; physician (MD or DO). The individual may not be a relative, supervisor or someone that the student works with. The clinical practicum portion of the course includes weekly body system check-offs, documentation, special assessment projects (nutrition and pain), complete health histories and a complete head-to-toe final physical assessment. Preceptors will be responsible for checking off the hands-on assessment work. Campus faculty will evaluate documentation. The preceptor letter, agreement and basic information are available on the ANGEL site for the course. In an online course setting, faculty Page 4 of 10

5 is available to answer questions in a different manner. It may take up to 72 hours for faculty to respond to your questions especially after 5:00 pm (1700), on weekends or holidays. Faculty are not online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Expect a reasonable response time for your questions. Do not wait until the last minute to ask an important question plan ahead! Please write in complete sentences; your s are considered professional communication. Remember, you are not internet messaging to a friend. Academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Any student involved in academic dishonesty will be reported to the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of Student Affairs in the College of Nursing and a grade of 0.0 may be issued for the course. Lectures, quizzes and examinations must remain the property of the College of Nursing and must not be copied from the Internet. According to university policy, consequences for academic dishonesty may include failure of the course, expulsion from the major, or expulsion from the university. Online discussions and exercises are confidential and should not be discussed with others who are not enrolled in the class. It is important for each course participant to express his/her ideas. All ideas need to be respected in discussions and exercises. Any group projects that are required, still require individual work as a minimal expectation. The MSU 4.0 grading system will be utilized to report final course grades. Points will be rounded to whole numbers using the 0.5 rule. Points at 0.5 will be rounded up while those < 0.5 will be rounded down to the nearest whole number. NUR 316 uses the standard College of Nursing undergraduate grading scale. Students must earn at least 75% (2.0) to receive credit toward the nursing major. The following point scale will be used for final grade determination: Page 5 of 10

Evaluation strategies used may include: your reaction (participation/engagement) to the question of the week, quizzes, examinations, active & positive weekly contributions, student activities, written assignments, documentation, history taking, physical examination and online discussions. Active, relevant, professional and ethical participation (in class, via & on-line) is expected. Each student will be evaluated ongoing during the semester. Page 6 of 10

7 Examinations (midterm and final) will reflect evidence-based questions that require application of previously learned materials. Students must complete every assignment, on a timely basis, in order to pass NUR 316. It is not an option to not complete an assignment. Any assignment not completed may result in a failure in the course. If a student has an emergency situation, the expectation is the lead faculty will be contacted prior to the assignment due date to make alternative arrangements. Students must successfully complete ALL pass-fail experiences, check-offs and documentation to receive credit for NUR 316. The student is expected to demonstrate competency during check-offs with a preceptor. Students will have one (1) opportunity to repeat documentation or a check-off that does not meet satisfactory criteria. All students are expected to provide safe, ethical, competent care to patients at all times. If the preceptor or other health care provider determines an unsafe situation has occurred, the student may receive 0.0 for the course.
