2 NURS 104 Course Syllabus COURSE SYLLABUS NURS 104 INTRODUCTION TO NURSING AND MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY COURSE DESCRIPTION This course focuses on an introduction to nursing education, nursing process, principles of teaching and learning, the current roles of nurses in health care as well as the historical, ethical, political, social and legal aspects of nursing. This information is related to the curriculum requirements and career opportunities in nursing. Content also includes an introduction to Benner s model and nursing as a ministry. It provides basic understanding of medical terms and abbreviations. Includes study of prefixes, suffixes, word stems, and technical terms with emphasis on proper spelling, pronunciation and applications. Elementary aspects of the nursing process with special emphasis on assessment are incorporated. RATIONALE This course will focus on educating the student participating in the online academy. It will consist of two parts: an introduction to nursing and an education in medical terminology. The student who participate in this course will be able to transfer the credits to Liberty University in place of taking introductory courses NURS 101 and NURS 105. I. Computer with basic audio/video output equipment B. Internet access (broadband recommended) C. Microsoft PowerPoint and Word MEASURABLE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: D. Identify major components of the Benner Nursing Model. E. Identify the components and principles of the nursing process. F. Recognize the difference between a registered nurse and other levels of care givers within the nursing profession (Standards of Practice). Page 2 of 6

3 NURS 104 Course Syllabus G. Discuss ethical, social, legal, and cultural influences on the practice of nursing. H. Identify the various areas of practice within the nursing profession. I. Utilize medical terms according to body systems and their use in nursing practice. J. Explain prefixes, suffixes, and the importance of accurate application and pronunciation of medical terms. K. Use medical terms and abbreviations in nursing practice. L. Employ a personal and professional Christian value system regarding legal and ethical implications related to the proper use of medical terms. M. Identify accurate spelling, appropriate use, and definition of medical terms regarding safe nursing practice. IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Textbook readings and lecture presentations/notes B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (2) Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to submit a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be at least 300 words, demonstrate course-related knowledge, and include at least 1 reference to the course textbook. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 1 classmate s thread. Each reply must be at least 150 words. D. PowerPoint Presentation 1. Topic Selection and Reference Page 2. Final The student will choose a specific region from a provided list and submit his or her choice in a word paragraph along with a reference page containing at least 4 related references in current APA format. The student will create a PowerPoint presentation of exactly 12 slides, not including the title and reference slides, based on his or her research on the selected area of nursing. E. Professional Development Plan The student will write a 2-page summary of his or her professional development plan for nursing in current APA format. The student must cite at least 1 scholarly source published within the last 5 years in addition to the course textbooks and Bible. F. Quizzes (16) Page 3 of 6

4 NURS 104 Course Syllabus Each quiz will cover the Reading & Study material for the assigned module/week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and have a 25-minute time limit. Quizzes 1 8 will contain 4 questions, and Quizzes 9 16 will contain 25 questions. The types of questions will vary per quiz. G. Midterm Exam The Midterm Exam will cover the Reading & Study material for Modules/Weeks This exam will be open-book/open-notes, contain 50 multiple-choice questions, and have a 1-hour time limit. The exam may be taken as many times as necessary, and the highest grade will be recorded. H. Final Exam The Final Exam will cover the Reading & Study material for Modules/Weeks The Final Exam will be open-book/open-notes, contain 100 multiple-choice questions, and have a time limit of 1 hour and 40 minutes.
