1 First Aid & Emergency Care HS 105 Section 3&4 Fall 2015 Purpose of Course To provide citizen responders with the knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until professional help arrives. Course Objectives By the completion of Health Studies 105, you will: Possess the skills and knowledge to perform cardiorespiratory resuscitation for adults, children, and infants Possess the skills and knowledge to use an automated external defibrillator Possess the skills and knowledge to react appropriately and give care when a victim becomes suddenly ill Possess the skills and knowledge to react appropriately and give care when a victim is injured Complete multiple choice exams for the Red Cross to earn certifications with at least 80% accuracy Complete a multiple choice exam for the National Safety Council to earn a bloodborne pathogen certification with at least 80% accuracy Complete course exams and assignments to earn a letter grade for this course Department of Kinesiology Learning Outcomes: 1. Communication. Uses clear and effective written, oral, visual, and electronic (WOVE) communication techniques to foster inquiry, collaboration, and engagement in physical activity and health related settings. 2. Lifelong learning, assessment, and self-reflection. Analyzes and evaluates one's own knowledge, abilities and actions relative to professional standards, seeks opportunities to grow professionally, and utilizes self-assessment and assessment of others to foster physical, cognitive, social, and emotional well-being. 3. Content knowledge, discovery, and critical thinking. Understands fundamental concepts of physical activity and health, conducts scientific inquiry, and applies critical thinking to solve problems from personal, scholarly, and professional perspectives. 4. Ethics, diversity, and social justice. Demonstrates leadership and social responsibility to improve quality of life for others and ensures equitable access for diverse groups by creating appropriate environments to initiate and maintain a physically active, healthy lifestyle. 2 Required Text and Materials American Red Cross First Aid- Responding to Emergencies, 1 st Edition ISBN Pediatric and Adult Skill Cards (Optional) National Safety Council Materials (provided in class) Certifications Three Red Cross certifications may be awarded upon the completion of this course. You must score at least 80% on the tests to earn your certification. Community CPR, First Aid, and AED Certificates All certifications are valid for 2 years. Certifications are now digital and access will be provided when the following requirements are met: Successful completion of CPR, First Aid, and AED skills testing A score of 80% or better on the Red Cross exams Bloodborne Pathogen Training Certification is valid for one year. Certification will be provided in class at end of semester. A score of 80% or better on National Safety Council exam Attendance Regular attendance is expected for success in the course. You may miss important videos, skill practice, or exams if you miss class. If you know you ll be missing class, please inform the instructor ahead of time If you miss 4 or more days of class (excused or unexcused), you will not pass the course if the drop date has passed. Extenuating circumstances will be considered and reviewed by the assigned instructor and the health studies coordinator. Emergency and extenuating situations will require documentation. This includes, but is not limited to: copying or sharing answers on tests or assignments, plagiarism, and having someone else do your academic work. Depending on the act, a student could receive an F grade on the test/assignment, F grade for the course, and could be suspended or expelled from the University.
