1 MANITOBA CENTRE FOR NURSING AND HEALTH RESEARCH D I R E C T O R S R E P O R T F E B R U A R Y D R. D I A N A C L A R K E Message from the Director D I R E C T O R & A S S O C I A T E D E A N, R E S E A R C H Faculty of Health Sciences, College of Nursing, University of Manitoba 89 Curry Place Winnipeg, MB R2T 2N2 Tel: Fax: mcnhr@cc.umanitoba.ca This report showcases the many accomplishments of the MCNHR and its members since our last report in September Thirty years ago Drs. Helen Glass and Lesley Degner acted on a vision. Together they KNEW that the University of Manitoba could provide fertile ground for the development of nursing research in the province. They were confident that, with the right support and resources, Manitoba nurses could count themselves amongst the best researchers in the world in their areas of endeavor. Helen s and Lesley s vision and hard work resulted in the Manitoba Nursing Research Institute, the forerunner of the Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research, and laid the groundwork for all the amazing accomplishments within the pages of this report. When I took a graduate course in 1985 from the woman we all called Dr Glass, she was at that time encouraging us to look to beyond the year 2000 she was always planning for the future, never content to rest on laurels. We lost Helen this week but she built such a strong legacy with her futuristic thinking, that she will never be forgotten. A trailblazer, a challenger, an innovator, a visionary!

10 D I R E C T O R S R E P O R T P A G E 10 Research Making a Difference Bev Temple I am a researcher with St. Amant Research Centre and as such we have very close working relationships with St.Amant and all of the programs that they offer to support people with developmental or intellectual disabilities. As part of my research program I did a scoping review of Pain in people with Intellectual Disabilities with service users and a graduate student trainee at the time. As a result of finding a reliable pain assessment tool for people with ID who are nonverbal, being used in practice in Israel, we have decided to implement the use of the tool across several programs at St.Amant. We are incorporating the knowledge translation strategies that have been found useful through other research to support the best uptake of the pain assessment tool. The organization has embraced the use of the tool and feels that we will prevent many episodes of misinterpreted challenging behaviour with better understanding of current behaviours documented on the tool which will allow us to detect changes that may require more intensive medical assessment. The physicians who work at the St.Amant as well as the medical director have been involved to be sure that all those who will be using and addressing the needs of our clients will be supportive of the change in practice. Student Engagement Research: From Bench to Bedside Dr. Joe Gordon is committed to providing quality research training opportunities through his lab space at the Children s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba where his work focusing on important bench research that provides the foundation for future bedside clinical care. Since his appointment in the College of Nursing in 2012, Dr. Gordon has been pleased to offering training opportunities for a total of 9 undergraduate and graduate students. In 2014, Dr. Gordon mentored third year undergraduate nursing student Andrian Ancheta who was the only nursing student award recipient of the University of Manitoba Undergraduate Student Research Award. In 2013, Dr. Gordon mentored two nursing students from Brazil who were part of the Science without Boarders Program, and is very pleased to report that one of them, Simone Cristina da Silva Rosa has decided to return to the University of Manitoba for graduates studies in the Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Sciences, College of Medicine where she can continue her studies under the supervisor of Dr. Gordon.

11 P A G E 11 Michelle Lobchuk Since March 2013, Dr. Michelle Lobchuk has been an in-house researcher at the UM College of Nursing/Grace Hospital Nursing Research and Knowledge Translation Unit. As well, Michelle has plans to engage health sciences students, and academic and clinical research collaborators in various caregiver communication studies in the newly constructed CFI-funded CAre Lab (3rd floor Dorothy Wood). Dr. Lobchuk has mentored and collaborated on several research projects at Grace Hospital. Two collaborations were funded by the Grace Hospital Foundation Patient Research Award for studies on: nurse attitudes toward family care at Grace Hospital with co-investigator, Leslie Dryburgh, Clinical Nurse Specialist and second, a multisite educational intervention to alter nurse attitudes toward mobile device use at the beside with University Librarians (Lori Giles-Smith, Principal Investigator and Christine Shaw-Daigle) and Grace Hospital (Andrea Spencer) and St. Boniface (Ceceile Porter) Nurse Educators. Michelle also collaborated with Dr. Bev O'Connell (Dean, College of Nursing) to conduct an evaluation of perceptions and changes that occurred as a result of the new bedside handover process on 3 medical units at Grace Hospital. Along with Grace Hospital nurse educators, Michelle actively participates in journal clubs on how to read and appraise research with clinic staff. Michelle's aim is to continue to foster research growth at Grace Hospital, Winnipeg West Integrated Health & Social Services by engaging as a consultant or a collaborator on respective projects with a particular focus on meeting family caregiver support needs. The MCNHR would like to share and showcase stories of how research is making a difference. We invite faculty to share with us any stories that can be featured in our Centre newsletter and website.

12 D I R E C T O R S R E P O R T P A G E 12 MCNHR Summer Internship Program MCNHR Summer Internship Program: Student Applications The MCNHR is now accepting applications from both undergraduate and graduate students for its Summer Internship Program. Deadline February 28, 2015 MCNHR Summer Internship Program: Mentor/Project Applications The MCNHR is now accepting applications for Mentors and Projects for the 2015 Summer Internship Program (deadline March 15, 2015). We are very excited to expand the program this year to include applications from both clinical and community partners and are pleased to continue to receive applications from our university partners. The Summer Internship program provides the opportunity for interns and mentors to work collaboratively on one or more projects. The added value of this program is that both the mentor and intern benefit from training, supervision, support and expertise provided by the MCNHR as part of this program. Mentors must have funding available to support the employment of a summer intern ($2,500-10,000 depending on the number of days of work of intern support being requested).
