D I A N A C L A R K E A C T I N G D E A N, D I R E C T O R & A S S O C I A T E D E A N, R E S E A R C H Faculty of Nursing, University of Manitoba 89 Curry Place Winnipeg, MB R2T 2N2 Tel: Fax: mcnhr@cc.umanitoba.ca Message from the Director I am thrilled to be returning as the Director of the MCNHR after a 12 month administrative and research leave where I spent six months of working with researchers at the University of Manchester. I would like to extend a big thank-you to Dr. Lesley Degner for her leadership for the MCNHR over the past year. As you will see in the following pages, the MCNHR has been a very busy place. In May, the MCNHR hosted Dr. Nancy Edwards as the 2012 Researcher in Residence. This past summer marks our third year of running our Summer Internship Program and it has once again been a huge success for both students and faculty mentors. As you read this newsletter, you can not help but see that there have been many reasons to celebrate in the outstanding accomplishments of members of the MCNHR. In addition to serving as the Director of the MCNHR and Associate Dean of Research, I am also serving as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Nursing until the arrival of our new Dean, Dr. Beverley O Connell in October. Dr. O Connell is joining from the Faculty of Health at Deakin University in Australia where she held the position of Associate Dean (Research) and the Inaugural Chair in Nursing at Deakin Southern Health Nursing Research Centre. Dr. O Connell has more than 18 years experience teaching and researching in the areas of falls prevention, stroke care, delirium, dementia, aged care, continence care, risk management and carer needs. I hope that when Dr. O Connell arrives you will join me in giving her a warm Winnipeg welcome.

2 D I R E C T O R S R E P O R T P A G E Researcher in Residence The MCNHR hosted Dr. Nancy Edwards, the 2012 Researcher in Residence, from May Dr. Nancy Edwards is a Full Professor in the School of Nursing, with a cross-appointment in the Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine, University of Ottawa; Principal Scientist, Institute of Population Health; and Senior Scientist, Élisabeth Bruyère Research Institute. She was appointed Scientific Director, Institute of Public and Population Health, Canadian Institutes of Health Research in July, During her visit, Dr. Edwards presented two public lectures: What Makes Community Health Interventions Work? is a behind the scenes look at what makes community health interventions work; and, A Health Equity Agenda for Multiple Intervention Dr. Diana McMillan, Chair of the Researcher in Residence Committee and Dr. Nancy Edwards, 2012 Researcher in Residence Research: Challenges and Opportunities, in which Dr. Edwards, examined reasons for health inequities and consider the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, using examples from the field of community health. Dr. Edwards also conducted workshops on developing programs of research and intervention research. Dr. Helen Glass, Professor Emerita and Dr. Diana McMillan, Chair of the Researcher in Residence Committee at the 2011 Researcher in Residence Event Professor Emerita The Research in Residence Program grew out of the dinner in 2004 to honor Dr. Helen Preston Glass who had requested that the money raised be used to establish a Researcher in Residence program. Special thanks to Dr. Glass for creating the vision and legacy for a Researcher in Residence Program to promote excellence in nursing research in Manitoba. The 2012 event attracted and united nurses from across the province and research colleagues from many different disciplines. Dr. Glass was unable to attend this year and her presence was missed by so many.
