I. Rational for Change The current course catalog description for this course lists CHEM 1110/1110L as a corequisite. Many of the topics introduced in course require a basic understanding of principles covered in CHEM1110/1110L. We would like to revise the catalog description to list CHEM 1110/1110L as a pre-requisite. By listing CHEM1110/1110L as a prerequisite, students registering for the course will be better prepared to succeed in the class. II. Economic Consequences There are no economic consequences. III Catalog BIOL Human Physiology (4) Credit Hours Studies of the physiological functions of the human body. Lecture 3 hours, laboratory 2 hours. Co-requisites: BIOL 2080L, CHEM 1110 and CHEM 1110L, or department head approval. Laboratory/studio course fee will be assessed. 2

Pre-requisite: CHEM 1110 and CHEM 1110L with a minimum grade of C, or department head approval. Co-requisite: BIO2080L. Laboratory/studio course fee will be assessed. V. Pedagogical Objectives 1. To review chemical and biological basis for physiological processes in the human body. 2. To introduce homeostatic control mechanisms and discuss homeostasis and its importance in physiological processes. 3. To introduce and discuss the physiological mechanisms of organ systems in the body by integrating the role of molecules, cells, tissues and organs. 4. To introduce and discuss the mechanisms of neural and hormonal communication. 5. To discuss the relationships of the nervous and endocrine systems with other organ systems. 6. To introduce and discuss the molecular mechanisms for contraction in three types of muscle tissue. 7. To discuss the primary functions of the circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory & digestive systems including gas exchange, absorption & transport of both nutrients & waste. VI. VII. Syllabus: See attached. Evaluation Methods: There will be five cumulative term exams worth 100 points each, and one comprehensive final exam worth 200 points. In addition there will be a weekly 5- point quiz; the highest ten quizzes will contribute a maximum of 50 points to the overall grade. 4 Quizzes will be taken via Blackboard and will consist of five multiple choice questions. Exams will be taken in class and will consist of multiple choice, fill-inthe-blank, matching, true/false, short answer and essay. VIII. Relation of Proposal to Requirements and Resources in other Departments or Programs: BIO2080/2080L is a pre-requisite for HHP 3140 (Interpretation of ECG I), HHP 3370 (Advanced Nutrition I: Macronutrients), HHP3380 (Sports Nutrition) HHP4370 (Perspectives in Clinical Nutrition I) and NURS2260 (Pathophysiology). 6 Attendance & Absences Exams & Assessments University Policies and Procedures Electronic Devices Attendance is required to succeed in this class. If you are absent the day of an exam, you must both notify me within 24 hours of the missed exam, and provide satisfactory documentation (as defined by the professor) within TWO weeks to account for your absence. If these criteria are not met, you will receive a zero for the missed exam. Please note the professor is NOT obligated to administer a makeup exam if she deems the documentation and reason is not adequate or acceptable. Documentation of illnesses must specifically state that the student was physically unable to attend class on a designated day. Absences for non-medical reasons must be reviewed and approved by the Office for the Dean of Students before being submitted to the professor. Please note that undocumented illness or transportation problems will not be considered acceptable. Extra time will not be given for an exam if you arrive late (regardless of the reason). If you keep your exam past the allotted time, it will be considered late. One point will be deducted from your exam grade for each minute the exam is late. All exams will be taken using a scantron form (bring the small, green scantron). You will be responsible for bringing your own scantron and #2 pencil. Exams may consist of any and/or all of the following: multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, true/false, short answer, matching. Please note exams will require students to express understanding of concepts in complete and grammatically correct sentences, including spelling and punctuation. Exams are not returned; you may make an appointment with the instructor to see/review your exam. However you do not have permission to copy, photograph or in any way duplicate the exams. Doing so will result in disciplinary actions, as determined by the professor and may include University disciplinary actions as set forth by the UTC Honors Court.
