1 Nursing Education Clinical Internship NUR 867: Credits: 4 Lecture/Recitation/Discussion Hours: 1 Internship Hours: 3 (9 weekly contact hours) Spring 2010 ANGEL on-line Format Catalog Course Description: This course will help the student develop clinical competencies toward effective teaching of the beginning nursing student or practicing nurse. It synthesizes and applies the content from previous courses into the application to clinical teaching. The role of the course is to develop the student as a scholar, teacher and collaborator in an academic learning environment. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, students will: 1. Integrate the faculty role in the planning, development, design, and assessment of clinical teaching or continuing education for nurses. 2. Implement and evaluate teaching units within the context of teaching/learning theories and principles. 3. Evaluate teaching effectiveness through peer, preceptor, faculty and self-evaluation processes. 4. Integrate healthcare disparities and cultural competence as a component of the teaching plan. 3 Grading: b. Course Grading Scale: Grades will be determined by adding all of the course activities together and arriving at a specific number (point total). The MSU 4.0 grading system will be utilized to report finalcourse grades. Points will be rounded to whole numbers using the 0.5 rules. Points at 0.5 will be rounded up while those < 0.5 will be rounded down to the nearest whole number. 4 Additional Course Content Methodology: Nursing Education Clinical Internship NUR 867: Credits: 4 Lecture/Recitation/Discussion Hours: 1 Internship Hours: 3 (9 weekly contact hours) Spring 2009 ANGEL on-line Format Weekly Lessons: (Discussions 10%) Topics related to teaching in clinical nursing will be presented and discussed on a weekly basis throughout the semester. Students are expected to complete the weekly lessons, readings, discussions, and assignments as they are posted. Assignments will be located within the weekly lesson folders in Angel. Students are expected to contribute to a minimum of five discussion topics throughout the semester. Clinical Internship: (Must receive a satisfactory evaluation to pass the course) Students are required to participate in a minimum of 126 hours for their clinical internship experience. A minimum of 90 hours must be completed under the direct guidance of an expert faculty mentor in an approved academic and clinical setting. The remaining 36 hours can be dedicated towards the completion of the required scholarly project. Any hours not dedicated to the project will be added to the clinical internship experience. An individual course calendar, personal clinical objectives, and evaluation strategies must be submitted to the assigned clinical faculty by the date noted on the calendar. Journals: (30%) The student is responsible for providing evidence of attaining course and personal objectives in order to meet minimal course requirements. Journal writings will reflect the hours, activity, and personal evaluation of the experience in accordance with outlined criteria. Documentation of successfully completing a minimum of 126 hours (90 clinical/36 scholarly project) of internship experience is mandatory. 1. Faculty will contact the student s preceptor throughout the semester in order to evaluate student progress towards accomplishing personal and course objectives. 2. Preceptor Formative and Summative Evaluations: The student will provide their preceptor with two copies of the Internship Evaluation Form at the beginning of the semester and two stamped addressed envelopes (please address c/o your assigned campus faculty member) to their preceptor for mailing. At both midsemester and at the end of the semester, the student is responsible for asking their preceptor to complete the Internship Evaluation Form, and meeting with the preceptor to review their performance. Both the midsemester form and the final form must reach the appropriate campus faculty before a course grade will be issued. The student must take responsibility for assuring the preceptor has mailed the evaluations in a timely manner. Scholarly Project Activity: (30%) NUR867 is considered the capstone course for the Master s in Nursing, Nurse Educator concentration. As part of this course, students are expected to engage in a scholarly project demonstrating synthesis of skills attained throughout their program of study. Content learned within the MSN core courses of the program have provided the student with the foundational knowledge required for the development of this project. The primary focus will be on translating research evidence into practice relevant to the nurse educator role. 4

5 NUR867 is a four credit course combining didactic and clinical components. One credit of this course has been dedicated to the development of this scholarly activity. The final project report will reflect a critical literature review and project analysis. Projects need to be developed within the time and resource constraints of this course. Students may work individually or involve collaborative groups of no more than three students. Students are encouraged to be creative in choosing a topic that is relevant to their personal area of interest in nursing education. A scholarly project proposal and project outline must be submitted to the clinical faculty by the date noted on the calendar. Projects that have not received clinical approval may not be accepted as a final project. Project Development Process: 1) Develop a project proposal and submit to your clinical (MSU) faculty member by the date noted on the calendar. The outline for the proposal is available within the project folder (NUR867 angel course). 2) The clinical faculty member must approve the project prior to further development by the student. 3) A completed project outline is due to the clinical faculty member by the date noted on the course calendar. 4) A final project synthesis paper will be submitted by the due date noted on the course calendar. Scholarly projects completed in a group require a peer evaluation to be submitted by each member as part of the evaluation process. Quizzes/Activities: (30%) Biweekly graded quizzes or activities will be administered throughout the course. The evaluation is designed to assess the student s level of comprehension of the content presented within the lessons. Question format may include multiple choice, multiple response, short answer, case study or sentence completion. Students are expected to complete the quizzes independently. Students will be permitted to access the quiz only once and a time limitation will be posted. Students are expected to maintain academic integrity and refrain from discussing quizzes until after officially closed. Course Requirements Computer Hardware and Software requirements: 1. Computer 2. Strongly recommend computer spyware and virus protection Writing Requirement It is expected that students will engage in a scholarly dialogue when conversing on the discussion board using appropriate citations and referencing. The minimum expectation for writing is at a graduate level in accordance with the MSU graduate student handbook. APA format is essential for citations of work and a reference list is required. Student information and discussions within the course are private and confidential. Course documents and discussion boards are not to be shared with persons outside of the course including preceptors. The ability to share information in an open and trusting environment is an essential component of the course and needs to be respected. 5

One excellent link for step-by-step assistance to college level writing is the Online Writing Lab at Purdue (University of Indiana) found at: On-Line Class Attendance Regular class attendance in an on-line course is considered the responsibility of the student and is required for successful completion of the course. A student s absence from class does not relieve him/her from responsibility for punctual fulfillment of any course requirement including participation/engagement. In this course, weekly participation/engagement is considered mandatory. Professionalism Students are expected to present themselves in a professional manner at all times. Professional attire is required while participating in any internship experience and an MSU student identification name badge is to be visible at all times. Documentation of all MSU requirements such as active registered nurse licensure, BLS, immunizations, HIPAA compliance, BBP training, clinical LOI, and others described in the handbook must be strictly adhered to prior to beginning the internship experience. Internships are to be completed in an approved academic setting and are not to be associated in any manner with a student s employment position. Academic Integrity Academic integrity is required from all students. Academic dishonesty is a serious infraction and may result in severe consequences. Any student involved in academic dishonesty will be reported to the Office of Student Support Services and the Office of Academic Affairs in the College of Nursing. A grade of 0.0 may be issued for the course. Lectures, quizzes and examinations must remain the property of the College of Nursing and must not be copied from the internet. According to university policy, consequences for academic dishonesty may include failure of the course, expulsion from the major, or expulsion from the university. Guideposts, case studies and Power Point lectures in the course are the intellectual property of faculty. You may copy for personal, study only purposes. Faculty materials may not be shared with others without first asking permission of the faculty author. Any submission that is deemed unprofessional, negative or inflammatory may be deleted by faculty. Write a second draft of the paper and submit to the writing center for editorial comments. f.
