3 Summer 2014 Page 3 of 10 HUSC3221 Course Description An introduction to the health care delivery system and the nursing profession is provided in this course. Concepts in the course include: nursing history, nursing theory, nursing philosophy, legal/ethical issues, professional roles, interdisciplinary roles, professional writing, and scholarship. Definition and comprehension of nursing education and nursing research are also included. Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Discuss the relationship between historical and contemporary events and the development of nursing. 2. Discuss the legal principles of the nursing role: a. Nursing Practice Act b. Standards for Nursing Practice c. Confidentiality d. Accountability and responsibility 3. Discuss the role of the nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary team. 4. Explain the role of professional nursing associations. 5. Discuss the importance of central concepts in nursing: a. Nursing Theory b. Philosophy in Nursing Education, Research, and Practice c. Caring d. Holism 6. Discuss ethical issues facing nursing and other health care providers: a. Values Clarification b. Professional Boundaries c. Patient Bill of Rights d. Codes of Ethics 7. Explain the importance of professional writing and scholarship to the role of the nurse. 8. Discuss the role of the nurse as a patient advocate. Course Pre-requisites: None This course is delivered as an online course with no class meetings. Evaluation/Grading Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Quiz: All students must complete the HIPAA quiz in Blackboard. The quiz may be taken three times to obtain a higher score and better understanding but must be completed by the due date on the course schedule. There is a quiz in the TTUHSC training which is great practice but the HIPAA quiz under Assessments/Tests must be taken for the course quiz average. There are multiple resources available online and under Additional Course Resources if you are unable to access the training through TTUHSC. Quizzes: All students must complete the online quizzes with an average score of 70% to pass the course. Quizzes will be administered in Blackboard according to the class schedule. If the quiz is not completed during the allotted time frame, a grade of zero will be given for that quiz. Quizzes are located under the Assessments/Tests. The HIPAA quiz will be included in the average. Quiz grades will not be rounded.

4 Summer 2014 Page 4 of 10 HUSC3221 Cultural Competence in Nursing Practice APA paper: This assignment is a 2 page APA paper demonstrating the student s ability to describe the nursing needs of a culture. The student will interview a friend, classmate, or family member (if that family member is of a different culture than you, this can include grandparents, step parents etc.) of a different culture from your own. This person should not be in the nursing profession. Do not limit yourself. Think of another culture or lifestyle you would like to learn about and search out someone who would be willing to share their culture with you. The focus of the interview is to investigate the following questions: how do people of different cultures and lifestyles want to receive healthcare what are their perceptions of how people from that culture or lifestyle are treated when receiving healthcare how can nurses provide culturally appropriate care for patients from their cultural or lifestyle background what other information does the interviewee think is important for nurses to know when taking care of people from other cultural or lifestyle backgrounds Write a two (2) page paper (not including the title page and reference page) in APA format to discuss the answers you found during your interview. The paper should be narrative format. The references should include 1 course required textbook, 1 peer-reviewed journal article, and 1 professional website. The instructions and grading criteria for the assignment are attached to the assignment and linked with the appropriate Learning Module. The paper will be submitted through the Blackboard. Nursing Theory PowerPoint: To introduce students to the concept of nursing theory, each student will create a power point presentation of a nursing theory to demonstrate an understanding of the nurse theorist s work and professional role, and analyze and apply a nursing theory to the student s professional goals as a nurse. The instructions for the assignment and grading criteria are located under the Additional Course Resources icon on the home page of the course. The assignment will be posted under the Assignment tab under Course Tools. Students may post their PowerPoint on the discussion board in the correct category for other students to review. Nurse Interview: Choose a registered nurse (RN) to interview for this assignment. If you can identify a RN with a bachelors of science in nursing (BSN) that would be preferable, however a RN with an ADN or diploma would be fine. Please do not interview licensed vocational nurses (LVN) as the practice is very different from a RN. Places you may find a RN to interview include hospitals, home health agencies, schools, nursing homes, doctor s offices, outpatient surgery or cancer centers, etc. Write a two (2) page narrative paper (paragraph format like you are telling a story) with a title page and reference page about your interview. At least one reference is required to support the information in the interview. Use the grading criteria attached to the assignment and to the appropriate Learning Module to guide the development of your paper. The paper must be submitted via the Blackboard assignment tool as an attachment no later than the deadline stated in the course schedule. Board Posting: Students will interact with each other via the discussion board postings. The discussion board forum is an opportunity to discuss current issues related to nursing. The dates for discussion board participation are listed in the class schedule and in the syllabus. The Board information posted in the center of the Homepage provides grading criteria, discussion board topics, and links. Didactic components 1. Quizzes (7)- 25% 2. 5 Summer 2014 Page 5 of 10 HUSC3221 Late Assignments and Extra Credit Work is due on the assigned dates and times in Central Standard Time (CST). Students should contact faculty prior to the due date and time if they anticipate material will be late. Please note that contacting faculty will not guarantee the receipt of an extension for the assignment. Due to the time constraints within this course, there are no allowances for extra credit assignments or resubmissions of an assignment. Please allow enough time for preparation and submission of each assignment prior to the scheduled due date. Grading Scale A B C D <60 F Assignment Due Dates and Times Blackboard operates on Central Standard Time (CST). All assignment dates and times in the syllabus are based on CST. If the student does not live in the CST zone then the student is responsible for ensuring assignments are submitted based on the dates and times listed in the course syllabus not local dates and times. Course Communication The course facilitator will utilize Blackboard for communication with students regarding course matters. Students are expected to check Blackboard daily for course announcements or messages. For your benefit, please confirm any arrangements or important conversations with a follow-up via Blackboard to the appropriate faculty within 24 hours of the conversation. This serves as documentation that the conversation took place. Any concerns that arise with the course (didactic or clinical) should be directed to the course facilitator (please arrange an appointment to meet with the course facilitator).

The Student Code of Conduct can be located in the Student Handbook at Plagiarism is a serious offence which includes: Copying information directly from a source without acknowledging the author Presenting others ideas as your own Not using quotation marks around words copied directly from a source Providing inaccurate information about a source Changing words but using the same sentence structure without acknowledging the source Turning in work where a majority of the sentences come from a source without acknowledging the author Turning in someone else s paper as your own work To avoid consequences related to plagiarism, always cite your sources and turn in your own work. Civility in the Online Classroom While there are no classroom meetings for this course, students are expected to demonstrate respect and civility towards faculty and other students in an online environment. Students are expected to assist in maintaining a virtual classroom environment that is conducive to learning. In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain information from the learning environment; students are prohibited from engaging in any form of distraction, disrespect, inappropriate language or behavior in online interactions. Inappropriate behavior in the virtual classroom will be dealt with by the course faculty on an individual basis.
