3 Ballard Honored with DAISY Award Registered nurse Drew Ballard of the Critical Care Unit recently received North Mississippi Medical Center s DAISY Award for August. He received a certificate, a DAISY Award pin, a bouquet donated by Bishop s Flower Shop and a hand-carved stone sculpture titled A Healer s Touch. Ballard, who lives in Tupelo, earned an associate degree in nursing from Itawamba Community College and a bachelor s degree in nursing from Mississippi University for Women. He joined the NMMC staff in June Ballard was nominated by the daughter of a Critical Care Unit patient. Dad had severe confusion, agitation and hallucinations. Initially he did not recognize any of his family members and was unable to recall simple information, the nomination states. The nights were always most difficult, but Drew always intervened when Dad was unable to be calm. Throughout all of this, Drew remained compassionate and made sure that Dad received the best care. However, we were most touched after being transferred to the floor, Drew came to check on Dad and say hello several times. Once, the patient became so confused that he would not take his medications from his nurses. Drew willingly came and talked to Dad for three NMMC recently recognized two physicians through Stars Online for their dedication. Dr. Will Cauthen, surgeon with the Surgery Clinic of Tupelo, and Dr. Marcus Ueltschey, family physician at Saltillo Medical Clinic, were both recognized for going above and beyond for their patients. One of Dr. Cauthen s patients was having severe abdominal pain. The patient s sister left a message for him, and he scheduled an appointment for that afternoon, even though he was off work that day. He came in to see her and ordered a CT scan, which showed gallstones. Dr. Cauthen was on call the next Presenting Drew Ballard (center) with the DAISY Award for August are Donna Pritchard, NMMC chief nursing executive; and David Wilson, NMMC president. to four minutes, and Dad agreed to take his medications. The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary compassionate and skillful care given by nurses every day. Nomination forms are available throughout NMMC or at net/daisy_award.php. For more information, call (662) or daisyawards@nmhs.net. Employees Honored for Outstanding Acts day and already had surgeries scheduled, but he added her to his schedule. Dr. Ueltschey s patients needed to be seen that day, but insurance was slow to approve a visit, and the office closed. Dr. Ueltschey left his personal number with Centralized Scheduling to call with the results of an insurance peer-to-peer review. When the results came in, Dr. Ueltschey was at a football game and took time out of his evening to make the needed phone call to be sure his patient got taken care of. If you see someone performing in an extraordinary manner like these, nominate him or her for Stars Online. Page 3 October 20, 2017

This inner cannula was unique to his tracheostomy and had to be special ordered, the nomination states. She worked immediately to assure one was ordered and then she personally delivered it to the patient s home when it came in because the patient had already been discharged. This is a perfect example of teamwork and compassion for our patients and their family. The BEE Award is given to a deserving caregiver each month at NMMC. 5 Baldwyn Woman Rebounds After Cardiac Rehab NMMC s Cardiac Rehabilitation staff and others from the Heart and Vascular Institute are extremely proud of former patient Linda Armstrong of Baldwyn. Armstrong had been extremely sick for several months before having heart valve surgery on March 22. She was still in bad shape when she reported for Cardiac Rehab one month later. When I came in, I couldn t even walk. I was in a wheelchair, Armstrong said. I had so much fluid on my legs, all I could do was drag them. I had to pick up my legs to put them in the car, they were so weak. But the staff started with what Linda could do using the rower, Nu Step bike and arm ergometer. I started seeing a difference in my body, and I could get up and walk, she says. By the time Armstrong graduated from Cardiac Rehab on Sept. 8, she had lost 50 pounds and was back to doing what she had been doing before she got so sick. It s like I was in a tunnel, Linda Armstrong (front, right) with staff and I thought I d never make it to the other end. I couldn t see myself ever getting better, Linda says. I got a second lease on life here. For more information about Cardiac Rehabilitation, visit or call THE DESK ( ). Joy purchases toys, gifts, socks, clothing and other items to have in the ER for children and families when needed, one nomination states. Another wrote, Joy has been a part of this community for all of her life and shows compassion through her work. She was also cited as a hard worker who is always punctual and continually learning. What I love most about my job is the people I work with. We are a family, Wofford said. We all have a part in making a positive impact or difference in someone s life. Wee Care Donation Employees from the North Mississippi Medical Clinics Central Billing Office recently made a donation to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Wee Care Room, in memory of fellow employee Donise Smith, who passed away this year. 7 Dr. Thomas-Messado Joins Pediatrics Staff Dr. Lisa-Gaye Thomas-Messado, an assistant professor of pediatrics-critical care at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson, is caring for seriously ill pediatric patients at the North Mississippi Medical Center Women s Hospital in Tupelo. As a critical care physician and hospitalist, Dr. Thomas-Messado acts as a direct liaison with NMMC s Emergency Department and at Batson Children s Hospital at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, admitting patients whose conditions require closer monitoring or medical management that cannot be done at home. These conditions may include pediatric sepsis, pneumonia, acute gastroenteritis, asthma and bronchiolitis. As critical care physicians, we also see even sicker patients who may require escalation of medical management including endotracheal intubation, she said. We may also take care of less acute postoperative patients as well. A native Jamaican and graduate of the University of the West Indies School of Medicine, Dr. Thomas- Messado completed residency at Wayne State University in Michigan and a fellowship in pediatric critical care at Go Star-gazing! Watch for individuals who go the extra mile and nominate them for Stars Online. A Star is worth 1,600 CSF points and given to an individual for a specific good deed that exceeds regular job expectations. A Star also receives a gold star lapel pin, certificate, congratulatory letter and recognition on the Star Online intranet web page. Groups may also be nominated for Stars Online for extraordinary acts. Nominations are entered online, and the committee members pair off to review each one during the weekly approval meeting. Factors the committee considers when reviewing nominations are: Is it a specific deed or general behavior? Is this above and beyond the individual s job responsibility? Did the nominee use his or her own resources? Was the nominee on the clock or his/her own time? Was it the person s own initiative and not for an organized charity? Does it pertain to the health of the community or did it occur on the hospital campus? the University of Miami s Jackson Memorial Hospital. Her fellowship brought her to a specialty she loves pediatrics. I love children, she said, and I love interacting with the families and helping them through, likely, some of the toughest times in their lives. UMMC s Children s of Mississippi outreach brings specialists such as Dr. Thomas-Messado closer to home for families in North Mississippi. Being a hospitalist in Tupelo means that if any child requires escalation of medical management, they wouldn t necessarily need to be airlifted or taken by ambulance to Jackson, she said. This will surely help with the financial burden a sick child may place on a family. Serving north Mississippi s children and families is a privilege, Dr. Thomas-Messado said. Children are so innocent, and they deserve reliable advocates, especially for their health, she said. They are the future! Stars Online encompasses three levels of recognition: Star awarded for a specific good deed or behavior that goes well above and beyond regular job expectations (must be job-related or occur on campus) Acknowledgment awarded for a specific good deed or behavior that may be part of regular job expectations Deferral not enough information to qualify as either a Star or an Acknowledgment When you want to say more than thank you, take time to nominate a Star! For more information, visit Stars Online on the intranet, call or mcrosby@nmhs.net. Page 7 October 20, 2017
