The votes are in, and the winners of the 2016 Readers Choice Awards were announced at a public event on June 24 and featured in a special insert in the newspaper on June 25. Readers were invited to participate in the online voting earlier this spring. After tabulating the votes, the Daily Journal named a winner and two finalists in each category. Those businesses and individuals were honored at a special event hosted by the Daily Journal at the Bancorp- South Arena. 2 Readers Choice Continued from page 1 Medical Clinic Readers Choice: West Tupelo Medical Clinic Finalists: Barnes Crossing Urgent Care IMA-Tupelo Family Practitioner Readers Choice: Brad Crosswhite, M.D. Finalists: Barry Jones, M.D. Terry Miller, CFNP Dr. Brad Crosswhite of IMA-Tupelo was named as the Readers Choice in the Family Practitioner category for the third year. Dr. Barry Jones of Barnes Crossing Medical Clinic and Terry Miller, CFNP, of Barnes Crossing Urgent Care were the two finalists in that category. West Tupelo Medical Clinic was named Readers Choice in the Medical Clinic category. The finalists were Barnes Crossing Urgent Care and IMA-Tupelo. Representing the clinics are Joey Hughey, IMA-Tupelo office manager, and Amy Brown and Allison Henrichs, North Mississippi Medical regional managers. IMA-Tupelo representatives, Allison Henrichs, Dr. Brad Crosswhite, Joey Hughey and Monica Long, are pictured with their finalist award at the Readers Choice awards ceremony. Angie Everett, administrator of Post Acute and Rehabilitation Services, accepted finalist awards for NMMC Home Health and Hospice at the Daily Journal s Readers Choice awards. Philip Raper, director of the NMMC Wellness Center, accepted the Readers Choice award for Fitness Center. The Wellness Center was one of two finalists for Best Massage Therapy. Thank you to the readers of the Daily Journal for selecting North Mississippi Medical Center as the Readers Choice in the hospital category. 3 Poole Retires After 28-Year Career No one can accuse Almetria Poole of getting stuck in a rut her career has been as varied as it was full. In June, the longtime nursing educator retired after 28 years with North Mississippi Medical Center. Poole graduated from Smithville High School before earning her bachelor s degree in nursing from Tuskegee University in Alabama in Two years later she received her master s degree in nursing from Mississippi University for Women in Columbus. After an eight-month stint at Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory, Poole became an instructor in the associate s degree nursing program at Itawamba Community College, a position she held for 20 years. In 1988 she joined the NMMC staff, working part-time as a staff nurse at the Behavioral Health Center. In January 2000 she joined the nursing faculty at MUW, teaching full-time at the Tupelo campus before going part-time in Meanwhile, Poole continued to work part-time at NMMC. From she served full-time as an educator at the Behavioral Health Center. From she served as chairperson for MUW s online program that allows associate degree registered nurses to earn their bachelor s degree. During that time she continued to work part-time in NMMC s resource pool, most often in the Transfer Center. Nursing is my first love, and teaching is my Becky Anglin, a case manager at North Mississippi Medical Center-Iuka, has been selected by her peers as NMMC-Iuka s most recent Employee of the Quarter. Anglin joined the hospital staff in In her nomination, Anglin was praised for always being helpful, caring, hard-working and considerate. She takes her job seriously and is willing to help coworkers any time they need it, her nomination Education Department coworkers celebrated Almetria Poole (fourth from right) June 21 during a retirement celebration in her honor. second, Poole said. I touched the lives of a lot of people. In 2012 she was named as a continuing education specialist at NMMC, a position she held until retirement. I will miss my NMMC family, especially the Education Department, she said. After working at least two jobs for almost three decades, retirement is bittersweet. I m through, she said, except for the volunteer work I plan to do at the medical center. In addition to volunteering, Poole plans to travel and continue being active with the Women s Missionary Society and Youth Department at Spruell Chapel in Smithville. She also plans to spend more time with her family, which includes son Mark Doss, who she raised as a foster child from the time he was a toddler, and her three granddaughters Modesty, 9; Riaunna, 8 and Markita, 6 of Union. She is also close to her sister, Bessie, of Moss Point and brother, Clovis of Smithville. Anglin Honored as Outstanding Employee stated. She is an advocate for our patients, and we are blessed to have her working with us. The Employee of the Quarter honor recognizes employees with exemplary job performance and customer service skills, as well as community involvement. Page 3 July 15, 2016

4 Heranney Joins Walmart-Columbus Clinic Certified nurse practitioner Susan Heranney, FNP-BC, of Columbus has joined the medical staff of The Clinic at Walmart-Columbus. Heranney received an associate s degree in nursing from Mississippi University for Women in Columbus. She earned bachelor s and master s degrees in nursing from Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. She has 16 years of experience as a nurse practitioner and has worked for such organizations as Health Springs Medicare Advantage, Florida Community Health Centers, United Health Group and Access Family Care. Most recently she was employed by CRAssociates, which operates the Columbus VA Clinic. The Clinic at Walmart- Columbus, LLC, is located at 1913 US 45 North and open from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. Saturday, and 1-6 p.m. Sunday. The clinic is closed from 1-1:30 p.m. Monday- Saturday. All patients are seen on a walk-in basis; no appointments are needed. For more information, call (662) Mann Selected as Employee of the Year North Mississippi Medical Center-Hamilton recently named Harold Ray Mann, who works in Facility Operations, as the Employee of the Year. He has worked at the hospital since Ray is a generous, respectable person and always has polite things to say, said a coworker who nominated Mann. He is always cheerful and willing to help, and takes good care of our customers. He and his wife, Janet, have one son, Alex. They attend Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Mann says his favorite part of his job is the people he works with. 5 Williams Retires After 30 Years at NMMC Jimmy Williams retired recently after 30 years with North Mississippi Medical Center s Facility Operations. He was joined by family and coworkers at a retirement reception in his honor. Williams joined NMMC on Nov. 11, 1985, as an audio-visual technician, a role that he continued to serve in until his retirement. We ve had a good group of people through the years and that s always a plus, Williams said. It seems like the hospital had a growing spurt right after I started. That s when Women s Hospital started being built. There s been a tremendous amount of growth and change over the years. This is a good organization and a good place to work. He and his wife Susan have been married 44 years. They have two grown children and two grandchildren. Their daughter Susanne is married to Randy Gammill and has two sons Seth and Will. Their son Jeremy is Jimmy Williams (center) was joined at his retirement reception by his wife Susan, children and grandchildren. Williams recently retired after 30 years at NMMC. married to wife Angela. Williams doesn t have any big plans for retirement, but is looking forward to watching his grandchildren s sports teams and working outdoors. I haven t really thought a lot about it, he said Maybe I ll do some gardening and any other honeydo s. West Point Academic Achievers Honored Barry Keel (right), administrator, recognized several North Mississippi Medical Center-West Point employees during a luncheon June 21 for academic achievements during the past year.
