1 AS 33 AFJROTC III Exploration of Space / Global Studies / Life Skills SYLLABUS Instructors Brian E. Yates, Lt Col, USAF (Ret) Christopher Williams, SMSgt, USAF (Ret) beyates@mpsaz.org cwwilliams@mpsaz.org Phone Office Hours M-F or by appointment Course Description: This course is a continuation of the study of Aerospace Science (AS), Global Studies (GS), Leadership Education (LE) & Physical Fitness (PT) for students who have successfully completed prerequisite courses. Third- (and some second-) year cadets put leadership skills learned in previous courses into practice by holding leadership positions in the corps of cadets. As junior cadet leaders, students learn to analyze and determine the factors contributing to success and failure as they plan and execute projects and activities. Throughout the course, readings, videos, group discussions, hands-on activities, in-text & student workbook exercises as well as small team projects are used to reinforcement lesson objectives. Cadets are required to write papers and make presentations on their research. The course consists of 40% Aerospace (including Global Studies), 40% Leadership and 20% Physical Fitness. The Aerospace portion of this course will examine the space environment including the Earth, the Moon and the planets, the latest advances in space technology, and continuing challenges of space and manned spaceflight. The Global Studies portion of this course will introduce cadets to the world s cultures through the study of world affairs, regional studies, and cultural awareness. This course delves into history, geography, religions, languages, culture, political systems, economics, social issues, environmental concerns, and human rights. During this year, we will be studying all these issues as they relate to the Middle East. The Leadership portion covers US Government & Civics as well as Life Skills. Life Skills is designed to help students decide which path to take after high school as well as, help to understand daily requirements in adult life. Information on how to research and choose a career is included. Information about financial planning and how to save, invest, and spend money wisely, as well as insurance requirements and how not to get caught in the credit trap is also studied. Finally, a review of important professional development skills is presented. Written reports and speeches compliment academic materials. Cadet corps activities include holding positions of greater responsibility in the planning and execution of corps projects. -Physical Training (PT): Cadets are required to participate in physical training once per week (normally Friday) and comprises 20% of the grade. All cadets will be provided a health screening questionnaire which must be completed and returned by the 2 nd Friday of the semester. Cadets will learn military drill and receive basic physical training as well as participate in group sport activities. The Presidential Physical Fitness Test is the measure of success and all cadets are required to complete the baseline, intermediate and final tests. All cadets are required to wear the issued PT uniform during PT activities. SAFETY NOTE: Beginning the night before PT (and continuing throughout the PT day), please, please, please ALWAYS remember to HYDRATE, HYDRATE, and HYDRATE.
2 Current Events: Beginning the 2nd odd Monday & every odd Monday after that, cadets will turn in a current events report. They will view/read one news story of local, state, national or inter-national significance when assigned and complete the worksheet provided. First part will be in the Who, What, When, Where, Why format & the second part will be the cadets opinion of the article, which will aid in working on the cadets critical reading and writing skills. Cadets will turn-in the assigned worksheet and be prepared to discuss it during the class period. NOTE: Sports, entertainment, and weather stories are not authorized subjects. Curriculum-In-Action (CIA TRIPS): Cadets are provided opportunities to leave school on field trips. These trips may include visits to museums, Air Force installations, colleges, and National Guard Units and other locations/facilities of Leadership or Aerospace significance. Other visits may be to the local junior high schools to recruit cadets for the AFJROTC program and community service activity visits such as a veteran s home or hospital.
