1 Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Syllabus Course Name: Occupational Health and Safety Prefix & Number: HSC 4933 Sections: All Semester: Spring, 2012 Course Description: This course provides an introductory level review of the major facets of occupational health and safety. Students will gain knowledge of the various professions that interact to protect the health and safety of workers in the workplace. The course will provide students with a background in regulatory guidance and compliance, and investigate the underlying science that drives safety regulations in the workplace. The principles of toxicology, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, and safety management will be presented to provide students with a solid foundation in the rudimentary aspects of occupational health and safety. 2 Course Format: This course will consist of weekly lectures and discussions. Weekly reading assignments in the course text book and supplemental materials will be assigned. Both in class and take home assignments will be made on a weekly basis. A midterm exam and final exam will be given, consisting of multiple choice and short answer questions. 4 Assessment Strategies: (Strategies must be numbered) 1. Weekly : Each student is required to complete weekly assignments that reinforce understanding of the weekly lectures, readings, and video presentations. These must be submitted by 1 week from the date assigned. In class assignments will also be required during the lecture sessions. Students who submit late assignments may be subject to grade reduction for those assignments. 2. Tests: A midterm examination and a final examination will be administered during this class. The format of these exams will be multiple choice and short answer questions, and must be completed during the class period in which they are given. 3. Final Presentation: Students will submit, as a group project, a power point presentation before the end of the semester consisting of 30 to 60 slides. The topic of the presentation will be the science and compliance regarding an issue in occupational health and safety. The to be presented should include, but not be limited to: the industries and occupations relevant to the issue, the potential health effects related to the issue, the regulatory requirements related to the issue, mitigation strategies for related hazards, and methods for communicating safe work practices regarding the issue. Groups will be selected by the 3 rd week of the course. Presentation topics must be submitted to the instructor for approval by the last class period on the 6 th week of the course. Grading Rubric: Grades will be based on the completeness, clarity, and accuracy of the presented. A references section is required, and a hard copy of the presentation must be submitted. If students feel there is an issue with unequal participation by group members, this should be reported to the instructor before the day of the presentation for resolution. All unauthorized recordings of class are prohibited. Recordings that accommodate individual student needs must be approved in advance and may be used for personal use during the semester only; redistribution is prohibited. Incomplete grades may be issued in extenuating circumstances according to COPH policy.
