District Mission Statement The mission of the Cape May County Technical School District is to produce graduates with the necessary skills to compete in the global workplace, the knowledge to pursue higher education, avocational skills for personal growth, achievement of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, and lifelong learning experiences through the combination of academic, technological, co-curricular and specialty training. The Cape May County Technical School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Commission on Secondary Schools. Beliefs 1. We believe that each individual has intrinsic value and worth. 2. We believe that respect is the right of each individual. 3. We believe that family is the most important and primary influence on all people. 4. We believe that every person should have the freedom to direct his/her own future. 5. We believe that everyone is responsible for his/her own actions. 6. We believe that everyone needs discipline, structure, and direction. 7. We believe that morals and values are learned. 8. We believe that self-worth is essential in realizing one s potential. 9. We believe that every person has the right to safety and security in his/her environment. 10. We believe that the community benefits from an educated populace. Philosophy of Practical Nursing Education The philosophy of the Practical Nursing program at the Cape May County Technical School District is in keeping with nursing and nursing education programs throughout the State of New Jersey. Our goal is to provide a thorough education and assure that our students become safe, competent practitioners of nursing. Students are selected for the program based on our belief that they can successfully complete the program, not on the basis of their race, national origin, religion, age, gender, marital status or sexual orientation. The program will provide a curriculum based on the holistic concept of patient care and will provide the students with the necessary knowledge to meet the requirements for licensing in the field of nursing. It will prepare the students to function as members of the health care team to recognize and meet the needs of people in their care. The curriculum will be based on the scope of the limitations of the Nurse Practice Act. It recognizes the importance of the clinical component of the program believing that true knowledge comes from doing. 1

Educational Goals and Objectives Upon completion of the Practical Nursing program, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic nursing care principles taught in the classroom while carrying out basic nursing skills in the clinical area. 2. Demonstrate professional interpersonal relationships. 3. Identify, report and record significant findings or changes in the patient s condition. 4. Provide appropriate health teaching to the patient, his/her family, and members of the community. 5. Recognize his/her legal responsibilities according to the Nurse Practice Act (Definition: 45:11-23). 6. Meet the requirements for licensing established by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. 7. Understand the need for continued learning in the field of nursing. The Practical Nursing program is projected, at this time, to be a full time, 44-week, daytime program reserved for post-secondary, adult students (18 years of age or older). The regular classroom hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 2:30pm. Clinical hours will vary depending on the affiliation site. The 2016/2017 Licensed Practical Nursing program is scheduled to begin in September There are 12 days structured into the program for emergency absence. Examples of emergency absence utilization include death in the family, personal illness, court dates and religious holidays (other than those already included in our calendar). There are no excused absences. Please also note that tardiness to class or early departure will accumulate toward the absence total as per the Board of Education Attendance Policy. An outstanding attendance record is extremely important for success in this program. If you exceed the 12-day allotment, you have not maintained a successful attendance record, and a recommendation for program withdrawal will be made. The Practical Nursing program is open to adult students with either a high school diploma or equivalent. (Please note that the cost involved with validating a foreign transcript or diploma to meet the high school credential requirement is the responsibility of the applicant and must be done prior to the start of class.) Pre-clinical and theory classes are offered at the Cape May County Technical School District with clinical experiences provided at hospitals and long term care facilities as well as other health care facilities. After successfully completing the 44-week course, the student receives a program certificate and is eligible to take the state licensing examination for practical nursing. Students are responsible for transportation to and from all assigned clinical sites. Please be advised that students are required to successfully complete a medical dosage calculation examination with a grade of 85% or better prior to entering the clinical setting and continue in the program. 2

This course is approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing and the New Jersey Department of Education, and consists of both classroom and clinical experiences. The curriculum content includes: Anatomy & Physiology & Sciences Chemistry Community Health Fundamentals of Nursing Geriatric Nursing Growth & Development Maternity Nursing Mathematics for Nursing Medical-Surgical Nursing Mental Health Microbiology Nursing Orientation Nutrition Pediatric Nursing Personal & Professional Relations Pharmacology Upon completion of the course and passing the state board examination, students are prepared to assume positions in hospitals, state institutions, extended care facilities for children and adults, local, state, and federal health agencies, doctors offices and clinics. 1. The course includes approximately 50% classroom and 50% supervised clinical experience at approved affiliation sites. 2. The course emphasizes the basic nursing skills and information required to give safe and therapeutic care to patients. 3. The student will learn how to provide a suitable environment for the patient; to carry out nursing procedures, therapeutic measures, preparation of supplies and equipment and other special services. 4. The course is a minimum of 44 weeks (by New Jersey State Law) excluding school approved holidays and vacations. Affirmative Action and 504 Officer for 2016/2017 Nancy Wheeler Driscoll Cape May County Technical School District 188 Crest Haven Road Cape May Court House, NJ Telephone (609) ext. 694 The Cape May County Technical School District shall provide equal and bias-free access for all students to all school facilities, courses, programs, activities and services and give them maximum opportunity to achieve their potential regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, age, sex, gender identity or expression, affectional or sexual orientation, marital status, liability for service in the Armed Forces of the United States, nationality, place of residence within the district, socioeconomic status, nationality, disability or pregnancy. Enforcement of other district affirmative action/equity policies (2224, , and 6121) contribute to this legally required equality of educational opportunity. 3

Practical Nursing Program Application/Admission Process and Procedures 1. Personal Qualifications: An applicant must be 18 years of age by October 15 of the enrolling year and submit evidence of good health, emotional maturity and stability. There is no upper age limit. Sound physical health will be among the factors determining eligibility. Applicants must have the physical stamina and ability to stand, balance, lift, carry, see, hear and speak. Furthermore, applicants must have the emotional capacity to empathize with patients and exercise self-discipline. 2. Educational Qualifications: Applicants for admission must be in possession of high school diploma or equivalent. (Please note that the costs involved in validating a foreign transcript or diploma to meet the high school credential requirement is the responsibility of the applicant and must be done prior to the start of class.) 3. Pre-Admission Testing: All applicants are required to take and meet the scores required on the TEAS V (Test of Essential Academic Skills) prior to admission into the Practical Nursing program at the Cape May County Technical School. The testing fee for each test administered is $60.00 (subject to change). A score of 50% or better in the Reading, Math, Science and English sub tests and an overall Adjusted Composite cut score of 55% or better must be achieved in order to proceed to the next step of the admission process. * A registration form for pre-admission testing is attached. The fee for this examination is non-refundable and must be paid prior to testing. Registration for testing begins on January 4, Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) offers a 224-page study manual that provides sample questions and general information in the areas of Reading, Math, Science, and English. Information on how to order the study manual can be found online at atitesting.com. Please note that the Cape May County Technical School does not provide the study manual. All applicants will be notified of their scores by mail. Please note that meeting the minimum requirements of the pre-admission test does not ensure program enrollment. Candidates with the highest scores who meet all other eligibility requirements will be offered enrollment. Re-testing is permitted to provide an opportunity to improve scores. (Please see Admission/Application process). * Subject to change. The TEAS norms measurements are adjusted periodically. 4. Application/Admission Process: After each testing date, the tests are sent in for grading and all prospective candidates who achieve the cut score will be notified and will be invited to an interview/orientation. The interview/orientation will be scheduled as soon as possible after the scores are received and one or more of the instructors will plan to meet with the entire group of prospective candidates to welcome them and review program requirements. The interview/orientation is mandatory. Non-attendance will remove the candidate from active candidate list. Prospective candidates will be expected to bring two letters of recommendation, essay, completed interview questionnaire (the questionnaire will be provided), and copy of diploma or Equivalent to the interview/orientation. 4

After the last scheduled test is completed (April 18 th ), the candidates with the highest TEAS V test scores who meet all other admission requirements in a timely manner will be offered conditional program acceptance and will be invited to attend the class orientation tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 2 nd, Attendance at the class orientation, first tuition payment and physical examination verification will be required to secure conditional accepted status. Full and permanent acceptance into the Practical Nursing program will be dependent upon meeting the admission committee criteria, fulfillment of the required physical examination, and receipt of all requested documentation, criminal background check clearance, and payment of tuition fees. An individual s decision to accept the opportunity for enrollment into the Practical Nursing program should be viewed as a commitment to successfully complete the program. The continued effort by the Cape May County Technical School District to provide a strong, effective and viable Practical Nursing program is promoted by the successful completion of program participants. 5. Health Requirements: Candidates are required to undergo a thorough physical examination upon conditional acceptance into the program. The cost of this examination and the required tests, titers and immunizations will be the responsibility of the candidate. The Adult Education Office will provide the physical forms and they will be reviewed at the interview/orientation. All physical forms are to be submitted at the 2016 class orientation. 6. CPR Certification: All candidates must be CPR certified in Adult & Child BLS (Basic Life Saver) for the Health Care Provider or American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer prior to the class orientation on June 2 nd, These are the only acceptable certifications. It is the responsibility of the candidate to provide valid proof of certification via a copy (front and back) of the CPR card. 7. Basic Computer/Technical Skills: Students that identify themselves as being less than confident with computer related tasks are encouraged to participate in additional computer training in preparation for program enrollment. Students will be held accountable for required computer related skills. 8. Criminal Background Check: All students must submit requested demographic information to our background check provider to be eligible for the program s clinical experience. This is a school district and healthcare facility requirement and individuals expecting to participate in the program s clinical experience must comply and meet the background check standards. Individuals that do not meet the background check standards of our district and off-site clinical experience facilities, will not be able to continue in our Practical Nursing program. Additional information about the background check will be provided at the interview/orientation. 9.
