2 President s Welcome Who Should Attend? All professional nurses who practice, teach, conduct research, or study in the specialty of nursing informatics. Hail to all nurses in informatics! Can you believe it? This is ANIA s 12th Annual Conference, and it is so exciting this year! We have an outstanding program for you. The conference theme is Planning,, and Interoperability: Tools for a Multi-Platform World. As you requested, the conference includes topics on planning, project management, communication, wireless, interoperability, and using real-time data for clinical decisions. Nursing informatics is coming into its own. The Department of Health and Human Resources is advocating that organizations move toward the Electronic Health Record. Dr. Brailer has held several conferences where health care providers have had important input into the initiatives that should be supported, how they need to be supported, and the barriers to overcome to implement Electronic Health Records. It is important to have a single place of truth for patient information. Information is critical to patient care and drives how we, as health care providers, deliver that care. It is important that we have one place of truth to provide the best possible care resulting in the best possible outcomes for each patient. Interoperability is a key to collecting data in one place where multiple health care providers can simultaneously access that information. Instant access to information is critical in decision-making for patients. Systems that work together provide an advantage to health care systems in delivering timely, efficient, and effective care. Along with interoperability is communication. Only through health care providers receiving and sending timely communications can quality decisions be made and appropriate care be provided. The third part of the conference theme, planning, is key to enhancing the patient s health by supporting the patient to have the best quality of life possible in their situations. Interoperability supports gathering information in one place of truth that allows care providers to communicate and plan care appropriately and efficiently. Documentation of responses to care and the communication of that documentation allows for adjustments in care planning by the multidisciplinary team. Nursing informaticists provide the expertise in clinical processes and translate those processes into electronic tools to assist the care provider in their daily caring of patients. Without these three factors interoperability, communication, and planning patient care is fragmented and cannot quickly respond to changes in patient status. The informatics nurse is a key player in the design and implementation of systems to meet the needs of today s patients and their clinicians. Congratulations on the successes you have already experienced! This conference will prepare you for future successes as technology develops and patient care progresses. We hope to see you in Las Vegas! Donna Gloe, EdD, RN, BC ANIA President 2005 Annual Conference Planning Committee Conference Chair Curtis N. Wilson, MS, RN, Lieutenant Colonel U.S. Army William Beaumont Army Medical Center serves as the beta test site for the implementation of CHCS-II, the Military Healthcare System s (MHS) comprehensive electronic health record. William Beaumont, like many health care facilities, is in the midst of a Tsunami of Systems. The Tsunami of Systems represents the current health care environment in which multiple clinical, administrative, and decision support systems are being implemented to improve health care delivery and support health care administrative information. This presentation will focus on lessons learned and provide practical tools to support planners of EHRs and information systems to help overcome the challenges of system overload. 103 Meeting the President s Agenda for e-gov and e-learning Initiatives Lori S. Frank, MSN, RN, Commander U.S. Navy The Joint Medical Executive Skills Institute IM/IT initiatives include an interactive Web page, 32 online modules on executive skill competency achievement, and three Communities of Practice (CoPs). The initiatives not only fit into the President s e-gov and e-learning vision, they serve as models for 21st century education, meeting efficiency and effectiveness. Members throughout the Military Healthcare System use the Web page, the online modules, and the CoPs as part of their day-to-day learning, communications, and interoperability. Interoperability 104 Patient Safety at the Point of Care: A Medical Center s Experience with Smart Pumps Charles Boicey, RN IV pumps are ubiquitous, and the newest Smart pumps have comprehensive libraries, rules, alerts, and logs. However, changing a rule or downloading a log has required touching each device. Recent advances allow wireless communication for real-time, two-way interaction. A new drug can be broadcast to every pump; an alert can be captured real-time. This presentation will describe the benefits of wireless IV pumps and the role of nursing informatics in selection, installation, and maintenance. 12:00 p.m. 1:30 p.m. Lunch in Exhibit Hall Exhibits Open/View Posters 1:30 p.m. 2:30 p.m. Concurrent Sessions 105 Using Real Time Clinical Data that Deliver Improved Patient Outcomes Barbara Rosenblum, MS, RN With increasing accountability requirements from legislators, accrediting bodies, consumers, and referral sources, home health agencies are mired in important but impossible-to-manage data collection, analysis, and reporting activities. Agencies risk a great deal if they cannot demonstrate adequate and improved patient outcomes. Strategic Healthcare Programs (SHP) demonstrates how using Web-based, real-time feedback of clinical and financial data, with drill-down capabilities, drives continuous quality improvement that is measurable, improves patient outcomes, and protects the financial viability of home health organizations. Planning 106 METAMORPHOSIS: Clinician Transforming from an Industrial Age to an Information Age Geraldine B. Jones, MS Martha Chatrou, RN At St. Luke s Episcopal Hospital, nurse educators designed and implemented a program called Metamorphosis. The program objectives focus on helping the nursing staff confront and survive the tidal wave of rapidly transforming from an Industrial Age to an Information Age. This session will include how to empower staff to overcome barriers to change, dialog regarding current changes, discussion of physical and psychological impacts of change, and exploration of survival strategies of change. Interoperability 107 Planning for Perioperative Improvements through Automation James J. Finley, MBA, RN, BC Applications for perioperative automation are now hot in the market. Vendors are aligning with HIS/CIS vendors. Perioperative automation, while small in comparison to implementing a HIS/CIS, is challenging in terms of complexity, infrastructure, and clinician adoption. Opportunities for operational improvement are significant. Now is the time for hospitals to examine opportunities in these areas and begin planning for implementation. Implementing perioperative systems to derive benefits needs careful planning and execution, along with the system implementation. 2:45 p.m. 3:45 p.m. Concurrent Sessions 108 Place Your Bets Wisely: Practice Interoperability Is Critical for the EHR Michelle R. Troseth, MSN, RN The President s call for widespread adoption of interoperable electronic records within the next 10 years is a cause for celebration. The Federal Framework for Strategic Action outlines four major goals that will require interoperability on the technical and practice sides of health care. This session will describe in detail the core elements of a Professional Practice Framework that informs clinical practice with the use of electronic health records (EHRs), interconnects clinicians so they can exchange patient health information, personalizes patient care, and improves data collection for quality measurement and research. 109 Outcomes Related to Business Application infrastructure in Nursing Elizabeth Libby Amos, PhD, RN As education continues to grow in the areas of financial management with grants, scholarships, and research efforts, the strategies of timeline management, scheduling, knowledge enhancement of Web users, and summary reports require more efforts on the part of grant recipients. The need for the development of programs targeting large project management has been identified as a time-saving priority and a necessity. This project developed and tested business software and further extended it into an infrastructure to enhance the educational format of grant management.

4 Interoperability 110 IMAGING New Electronic Tool for Nurses Susan I. Reynolds, M.Ed, BSN, RN The Imaging System captures clinical images, scanned documents, electrocardiogram (EKG) waveforms, and radiology images. Image and text data are provided in an integrated manner that facilitates the clinician s and nurse s task of correlating data and making patient care decisions in a timely and accurate way. This presentation will explain five important purposes of the system: document findings, image accessibility to clinicians and nurses, aid in conference decision-making and education, follow-up treatment of patients, and facilitation of telemedicine. 4:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. Concurrent Sessions Planning 111 Clinical System Selection in the Long-term Care Environment Judith E. Moffett, MS, BSN, RN,C With the move toward electronic health records, selection of a clinical system solution with the promise of meeting both current and future needs was the overriding consideration in this large multi-facility, long-term care company s search. This presentation will describe the steps involved in system selection. Practical information on determining requirements, selecting vendors for demonstrations, completing gap analysis, conducting pilot(s), and working cooperatively with vendors, as well as lessons learned throughout, will be described. 112 Developing a Strategy for EMR Implementation Kathleen LePar, MBA, RN A finely executed project can suffer disappointing results if an efficient mechanism is not in place to ensure that vital information is relayed to those needing it. At a minimum, organizations should give thought to how the proceedings of team meetings and project work will be communicated. The goal of this session is to provide guidelines for an effective Strategy, ensuring ongoing commitment and support by all key stakeholders for all aspects of the project. 113 Delivering Value and Outcomes on Your Investment in Information Systems George D. Velianoff, DNSc, RN, ACHE Delivering value on your investment has more than one component. Usually, value is calculated only as saved dollars; however, by automating workflows, you can achieve a new level of value.you can attain best practice outcomes. The goal of the value on investment (VOI) calculator is to input your current data on financial, clinical, and operational metrics that will then calculate the value on your investment by implementing a solution that requires process changes by incorporating best practice workflows. Day 2 Friday, April 29, Contact Hours 7:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Registration Open 8:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. Continental Breakfast in Exhibit Hall Exhibits Open/View Posters 9:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. General Session 201 Technology Innovations and the Nursing Shortage Susan K. Newbold, MS, RNBC, FAAN, FHIMSS Nursing challenges in the state of Maryland are multifaceted, necessitating multifaceted solutions. Technology is playing a role in alleviating the nursing shortage. The Maryland Statewide Commission on the Crisis in Nursing Technology Workgroup focuses on technology s role in addressing Maryland s nursing shortage. A report applicable to all states was published in 2004, which reflects innovative use of technology as well as examples of how the technology can solve specific nursing problems. A survey to be conducted in 2005 will be highlighted. 10:45 a.m. 11:45 a.m. Concurrent Sessions 202 Holding Hands with Information A Methodology for Success Jeanelle A. Newkirk, RN Postoperative visits (POV) at Duke Hospital are required to occur within 48 hours after anesthesia administration. An initiative was identified to provide a technology solution to enhance quality data capture. The perioperative IS development team in conjunction with anesthesia created an application for POV data collection to reside on a hand-held PC. POV data collection applies Web-based wireless technology and is sent directly to the CDR. The nurse informaticist role was pivotal in implementation and evaluation. Interoperability 203 Nursing Solutions: Medication Management in Critical Care Rosemary Kennedy, MBA, RN Reducing the risk of medication errors is critical and even more so for intensive care unit patients, where high volumes of drugs are administered. This presentation will discuss how improving the workflow of nurses in such areas will help correct known deficiencies in medication management. Topics discussed include improved medication processes from time of ordering to administration, use of barcode technology, and pointof-care technology supporting medication administration. 204 The New Wireless Environment Timothy O Connor, MBA In today s fast-paced management environment, technology has to meet three demands: ease of use, instantaneous feedback, and bottom-line impact. This workshop will explore the relationship of wireless technology to operational decision making, and how to implement outcome-driven decision modeling to enhance quality of care, increase reimbursements, and improve survey outcomes. 11:45 a.m. 1:30 p.m. General Session (Lunch Served) 205 Synthesis Plus: What Is Your Action Plan? Carol J. Bickford, PhD, RNBC So much is happening in so many venues today that it s easy to become overwhelmed with the bombarding information bits and bytes about informatics, technology, telehealth, EHRs, standards, interoperability, evidence-based practice, quality, outcomes, policy, and so on. How can an informatics nurse make sense of the many Towers of Babel and silos of jargon? What s an informatics nurse to do? This facilitated discussion will engage participants in defining and refining realistic personal action plans for professional contributions and professional development. 1:30 p.m. 2:30 p.m. General Session 206 Alliance for Nursing Informatics Conney Delaney, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI Joyce Sensmeier, MS, RNBC, CPHIMS The Alliance for Nursing Informatics, formed in 2004 and supported by AMIA and HIMSS, represents an unprecedented coming together of all known nursing informatics organizations in the U.S. The Alliance for Nursing Informatics strives to speak with one voice on nursing informatics issues and opportunities of national import. This presentation will provide an overview of the impetus for this Alliance, purpose and objectives of the Alliance, membership, and current activities. Open dialogue will be encouraged. 2:30 p.m. 2:45 p.m. Refreshment Break 2:45 p.m. 3:45 p.m. General Session 207 Digging for Data: Create a Data-Rich Nursing Environment Jim Cato, MHS, MSN, RN, CRNA Using data mining capabilities, nurse leaders can discover previously unknown relationships among clinical data for improved performance. Immediate views of that data can be presented in a nursing dashboard within a clinical information system and can provide powerful means to evaluate information and act upon it.
