ANIA & CARING How did the idea of a merge start? Informatics reception 2005 The acting presidents of both organizations met at one of the first Alliance for Nursing Informatics (ANI) meetings. Our two organizations began by working together on a collaborative conference. Both boards began to discuss similarities and differences. Announced intent to investigate at the Fall 2007 ANI meeting. 33

Intense all-day meeting at the Rosen Plaza Hotel Identified our guiding council We all agreed to find answers to our unknowns Note sent to both memberships prior to the meeting to inform them of our intent and investigation Positive response received Positive on-site response 37
ANIA & CARING Joint Conference
ANIA & CARING Joint Conference 2008 The 2008 Annual Nursing Informatics Conference held at the Gaylord National Resort on the Potomac on April 17th-19th is the most successful conference to date! This is ANIA's 15th year for organizing and hosting this Annual Conference. CARING partnered with ANIA in 2007 and formed the joint Conference Planning committee. In its 2nd year, the joint Conference Planning Committee composed of board members from ANIA and CARING exceeded their own expectations. First, there was record attendance of over 325 informatics nurses from the U.S., Canada, Finland, Spain, and Taiwan. Then, this year's line up of keynote speakers represented the luminaries in the healthcare informatics industry and 36 speakers delivered 'knock-out' and robust content for the participants. 39

September 2008 Member Survey explanation of why you support the proposed merger Creates a stronger Nursing Informatics Organization which is needed to further advance the specialty. Prevent duplication of efforts and provide a stronger voice for nursing informatics We don t like it [redundancy] in our clinical systems, why would we have it in our nursing organizations Synergy is a beautiful thing. One administrative office instead of two, more funds to work with, one voice = easier for members 42
September 2008 Member Survey explanation of why you support the proposed merger Given the similarities and redundancies, I think we should continue to work our the differences. However, I think that the combined organization should have regional and local branches so that attendees can have access to low/no cost offerings in their area.. Bigger voice nationally We need unify and have one collective voice Brings strength and cohesiveness to nursing informatics 43

ANIA- CARING Press Release Falls Church, VA. The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) and CARING, both nationally recognized non-profit Nursing Informatics organizations, announced their January 1, 2010 merger into a new entity, ANIA-CARING. The combined organization, with membership in 50 states and 34 countries, is of the largest associations of its kind in the country. ANIA was established in 1992 and provided the first opportunity for informatics nurses in Southern California to meet and network. ANIA grew to be a national organization providing networking, education and information resources to enrich and strengthen the roles of nurses in the field of informatics with members in all 50 states and five countries. CARING, formerly known as Capital Area Roundtable on Informatics in Nursing, was developed and organized by nurses in the DC area in 1982 to provide a forum for the advancement of automated healthcare information systems. CARING grew over time to become a nursing informatics organization with members in 50 states and 34 countries advancing the delivery of quality healthcare through the integration of informatics in practice, education, administration and research. 47
ANIA- CARING Press Release cont d According to Jerry Chamberlain, former CARING President, newly appointed ANIA-CARING Vice-President, the ANIA-CARING name was chosen to reflect the history of each organization. I truly believe that by merging we will be able to take the best from each organization and create a new organization that is greater than the sum of its parts to support nurse informaticists in their challenging roles and to advance the specialty of nursing informatics, said Chamberlain. The organizational merger proposed by the respective board of directors for ANIA and CARING received great support and an overwhelmingly favorable vote by members of both organizations. The boards have been combined to form a new board. The beginning of 2010 we will be very busy with activities to form the foundation of the new association, such as combining the Web sites, job banks, membership databases, and finalizing our strategic plan and budget. Stay tuned for more information said Dr. Victoria Bradley, former ANIA President and newly appointed ANIA-CARING President. 48
ANIA- CARING Press Release cont d ANIA-CARING is a leading Nursing Informatics organization dedicated to advancing the field of nursing informatics through communications, education, research and professional activities. There will be a celebration of this merger at the upcoming annual conference to be held in Boston, MA on April 22-24, 2010 titled, Re-Evolution in Nursing Informatics. 58 2012 Dear ANIA- CARING Members, In 2010 the American Nursing InformaEcs AssociaEon (ANIA) and CARING organizaeons merged to give nursing informaecs a stronger and more unified voice for the organizaeons. At that Eme, the decision was made and voted upon by the membership that the name of the new organizaeon would be ANIA- CARING to preserve the history of both organizaeons. AQer the first year, we planned to re- evaluate the situaeon with the poteneal of seleceng of a new name for the organizaeon. AQer much thought and discussion, the Board of Directors proposes to change our official organizaeonal name to 'American Nursing InformaEcs AssociaEon' (ANIA) with a logo tagline of 'Where caring and technology meet'. This name change retains the history of both organizaeons with an easily recognizable and intuieve naeonal name for our growth and future. Take a moment now to vote on the proposed name change by clicking on the link below to cast your vote. The voeng process will be open now through April 8, I strongly encourage you to vote! Click on the link VOTE to cast your vote. As always, please contact me if you have queseons or comments. Best regards, Cur%s Dikes CurEs N.
