COURSE DESCRIPTION The two-day event will feature pain management expert Debra B. Gordon RN-BC, DNP, ACNS-BC, FAAN, and faculty and staff members from the world-renowned Keck School of Medicine of USC discussing the latest advancements in patient-centered, interdisciplinary pain management. TARGET AUDIENCE Practitioners and health care professions who seek the latest developments in pain medicine, including primary care physicians, oncologists, surgeons, hospitalists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses, and other allied health care professionals who treat patients with acute, chronic malignant, and non-malignant pain. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Describe major recommendations of the 2013 APS/ASA/VA DoD postoperative pain guidelines. Propose new approaches to acute pain assessment, care planning, and treatment. Identify the potential benefits and drawbacks of various agents used as part of a multimodal approach to treat acute pain. Outline available national guidelines for pain and key recommendations for chronic opioid treatment and neuropathic pain. Outline appropriate strategies for assessment and management of pain in older adults. Classify management techniques and dosing regimens for acute and postoperative pain in chronic pain patients. Distinguish the rationale of using standardized tools for titration of analgesics and sedatives in the ICU. Describe the primary pharmacological treatments for neuropathic pain. Describe the use of KETAMINE for pain. Identify and deliver a range of basic cognitive-behavioral and physical comfort measures. Define Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies. Define the biopsychosocial nature of pediatric chronic pain. Classify the elements of pediatric pain assessment. Describe the services offered by the Palliative Care service. Prescribe two non-pain symptoms that are managed by the Palliative Care team including assessment criteria and management of each symptom. Describe how unaddressed spiritual problems can affect suffering. Describe the care and management of continuous peripheral nerve blocks, and possible side effects. Evaluate treatment options for various chronic pain conditions including pharmacology, neural blockade, spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal drug therapy. 3 FEATURED SPEAKERS Dr. Richeimer is the Chief of the USC Division of Pain Medicine and Director of Norris Cancer Hospital Palliative Medicine service. He is Board Certified in the fields of anesthesiology and psychiatry, and in the sub- specialty of pain medicine. Dr. Richeimer is a member of the American Pain Society, American Society of Regional Anesthesia, American Society of Anesthesiologists, and International Association for the Study of Pain, and the American Medical Association. He is on the editorial board of the journal Pain Medicine, and is also a member of the board of For Grace. Dr. Richeimer has published over fifty papers and chapters. Dr. Richeimer is dedicated to using the full scope of medical science to provide personalized, effective care. Jeffrey I. Gold, Ph.D. Jeffrey I. Gold, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. Dr. Gold, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, is director of the Pediatric Pain Management Clinic within the comprehensive multidisciplinary Pain Management and Palliative Care Program in the Department of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine at Children s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). Dr. Gold is also the director of the Children s Outcomes, Research, and Evaluation (C.O.R.E.) program, director of the CHLA Yo San University Pediatric Acupuncture program and the CHLA-Heart Touch Massage Program, and faculty with the Pediatric Psychology specialization within the USC University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Mental Health Services at CHLA. Dr. Gold has specialized in the assessment, treatment, and clinical investigation of acute and chronic pain in children, adolescents, and adults with various chronic medical illnesses, such as sickle cell disease and chronic pain conditions. Debra B. Gordon RN-BC, DNP, ACNS-BC, FAAN Debra Gordon is a teaching associate with the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle. She is a coinvestigator for the UW s NIH designated John D Loeser Center of Excellence in Pain Education. Ms. Gordon has also been involved in a number of national and international projects focused on improving pain management, including the American Pain Society s (APS) Quality Improvement Guidelines and the Robert Wood Johnson funded Postoperative Pain Management Quality Improvement Project. She has served as a member of the American Nurses Credentialing Center s content expert panel on pain management, the American Medical Association s Episodes and Costs of Care Low Back Pain Workgroup, and as co-chair for the APS, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), and Veteran s Administration- Department of Defense (VA- DoD) acute postoperative pain guideline. Ms. Gordon is active in a number of professional pain management societies, and has served as a board member for both the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives and the American Pain Society. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
