2 High Risk Emergency Hawaii FEBRUARY 15-19, 2012 High Risk Emergency Hawaii is a course designed to address those topics that, due to the risk of misdiagnosis or misadventure, produce the greatest anxiety and concern in the daily practice of emergency medicine. Offered by the Department of Emergency at the University of California, San Francisco, nationally renowned for emergency medical and trauma care, this conference will meet the needs of the practitioner who encounters a high risk condition in their daily medical practice. This includes practicing emergency physicians as well as internists, family practitioners, and others who practice in an urgent care, high risk, or emergency department setting. OBJECTIVES The objectives of this conference are to improve competence and performance in diagnosis, application of current treatment recommendations, and patient counseling for: Appropriate diagnosis and management of pediatric shock, airway, and procedural sedation; Accurate identification and treatment of patients with abdominal vascular emergencies, acute MI, smoke inhalation, low back pain; Identification and management of patients with sepsis, performance of vascular access, pediatric procedural sedation, orthopedic emergencies, and airway management. Family Physicians: Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. Nursing: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. Physician Assistants: AAPA accepts category 1 credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA Category 1 Credit TM for the PRA for organizations accredited by the ACCME. The American College of Emergency Physicians endorses its use, and training in bedside ultrasound is now a standard part of the curriculum for emergency medicine residents. This session will hone your ability to perform bedside ultrasound to make high impact diagnoses. Didactic sessions will provide concise, useful information, images, and video. Participants will receive personalized instruction through hands-on teaching and practice on live models under the guidance of highly experienced faculty and sonographers. Due to the hands-on nature of this session, enrollment is very limited and early registration is encouraged. OBJECTIVES After this workshop, participants will be able to: Prepare and operate an ultrasound machine; Detect pericardial and intraperitoneal fluid with FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma); Improve performance of central venous access; Perform limited evaluation of cardiac function; Identify pneumothorax; Differentiate ascites from a healthy baby boy.
