2 SPEAKERS/WORKSHOP PRESENTERS: MARIE ALFORD - Director SA & NT Dementia Training Study Centre Keynote Address: Person Centered Care is the foundation upon which quality dementia care is built without this nothing else matters, if you talk the talk, you must walk the walk Marie currently has a dual role of General Manager of Dementia Care & Development and Director of the SA & NT Dementia Training Study Centre. She is responsible for the strategic operations, implementation and ongoing program delivery of all community services and training within Alzheimer s Australia SA. Marie has 8 years experience in the field of dementia care with a previous 15 years in the field of advocacy and research. Her passion is promoting person centred care. CHRISTINA GIUDICI - TaKeTiNa Teacher Address title: Rhythm for Wellbeing - Using TaKeTiNa in Aged Care Workshop title: TaKeTiNa in Practice Christina Giudici is a Hobart based consultant, facilitator and owner of a small business (FIMBY) which helps people grow their own vegetables and fruit. During she studied intensively with Reinhard Flatishchler, the founder of the TaKeTiNa Rhythm process. MAGGIE HOPKINS - Enrolled Nurse and Natural Therapist Address title: Aromatherapy and more: Residents stories became my journey. Workshop title: Smellness and Wellness: Aromatherapy in Aged Care. Maggie has had 30yrs experience in the aged care industry, initially as an EN and for the past 16 years as a complementary therapist in high care. Whilst Maggie specialises in the area of aromatherapy, she also has qualifications and experience in Bach Flower Essences, Bowen Therapy and Reiki. Currently she works as a complementary therapist at 3 high care facilities as well as running her own busy private practice. ANNE KELLY - Dementia Consultant Address title: Rehabilitative Therapies - Are they the Aged Care Holy Grail? Anne works at Alzheimer s Australia Tasmania. In 2009 she received a Churchill fellowship to travel overseas to study the application of Rehabilitative Therapies in aged care. Since her return she has been working closely with two aged care organizations' to introduce a Rehabilitative Therapies model of care. This presentation will tell the story thus far. MARK SILVER - Social Worker Address title: Story telling and other intergenerational programs in dementia care Workshop title: Guidelines and principles for setting up story telling and intergenerational programs Mark has been a social worker for over 35 years, primarily in aged care and disability. He has a special interest in how narrative approaches and storytelling can be linked to strengthening identities, relationships and community networks. Being involved as a Videographer and in Digital Storytelling has lead to a fascination with how the processes involved in creating stories can, in themselves, be used as therapeutic tools. SALLY BANKS - Music Therapist Address title Day 1: Music, a vital pathway to the mind for clients with dementia Workshop title Day 1: A practical guide to using music in dementia care Address title Day 2: A Bell choir - what next? Workshop title day 2: How to establish and maintain a bell/chime choir Sally is an experienced therapist, having worked in Aged Care for more than 18 years. She has presented aspects of her work in caring for people with dementia for Alzheimer s Australia in Victoria and Tasmania with conference presentations and workshops for carers. In April 2010 Sally was interviewed about her work by Peter Mares on The National Interest, an ABC Radio National program which explored public policy in relation to caring for an ageing population with a focus on dementia and in particular Alzheimer s Disease. ROBYN BISHOP - Community Health Social Worker Address title: Laughter - the universal medicine Workshop title: Laughing from the Heart Robyn has worked as a social worker in medical, rehabilitation and community health settings for many years and currently works full time in Community Health at the Brighton Community Health Centre. Since 2001, Robyn has been using laughter as a therapeutic tool in health and well-being programs in a wide variety of settings. Health benefits can be psychologically, emotionally and physiologically significant. Using laughter as a therapeutic tool is a way to rediscover the lighter side of life and the joy and connection that laughter brings.

3 SPEAKERS/WORKSHOP PRESENTERS: RHONDA McCOY - Director of Nursing / Manager Address title: Yes there is Garden of Eden in the DHHS Rhonda has been a nurse for 40 years, with a passion for managing and leadership. Through the Eden Alternative model of care, she has revamped cultures in two aged care facilities in Northern Tasmania. In December 2010 she returned to the Department of Health and Human Services in the role of the Director of Nursing Manager at Beaconsfield District Health Services. With support from the Primary Health Care leadership team, she has begun to enhance the culture of this small rural facility by implementing the 10 principles of the Eden Alternative. Already, some culture change has been effected, through random acts of kindness, zero tolerance to bullying and acknowledging that all staff members are world builders. DR BELINDA GOODENOUGH - Researcher Address title: The Smile Project "For many years Clown Doctors have been visiting children s hospitals to cheer up young patients, parents and staff. Can this type of Humour therapy be adapted for those living in residential aged care facilities, especially the elderly diagnosed with dementia? The SMILE study is an ambitious NHMRC-funded multisite trial of humour therapy as a person-centred, individualised and positive intervention for improving mood and quality of life for the aged and those who care for them. As part of fleet of projects managed by the Dementia Collaborative Research Centres, the SMILE study began in 2009 and is currently underway with a view to completion mid Dr Belinda Goodenough, the project co-ordinator, will give an overview of the program and insights into experiences so far for residents and carers. ADJUNCT ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR SUSAN KOCH Address title: Is sex a complementary therapy? Susan Koch (PhD) is Principal Research Fellow at the Helen Macpherson Smith Institute of Community Health (Royal District Nursing Service) and Adjunct Associate Professor at La Trobe University. She has excellent links with consumer bodies and industry. Susan has led and/or been a co investigator on numerous research projects and a number consultancy projects both at a State and National level. Her research has its focus on practice issues including restraint use; elder abuse; care for people living with dementia and medication management. DR PAT BAINES - Art Therapist Workshop title (day 1): Spinning stories and painting poems Workshop title (day 2): Empowering the inner artist Pat works as an art therapist with Alzheimer s Australia Tasmania. Pat trained as an art therapist after years working as a psychologist/counsellor and then further years as an anthropologist. From this diverse background she has developed a praxis of using art therapy in a special way, to enable those with dementia (in early, middle and late stages) to engage with their creativity and improve the quality of their lives. CINDY FENTON - Reiki Master, Teacher & Nurse Workshop title: Warm heart, gentle hands Cindy is a Reiki Master, Counsellor and nurse (for the past 30 years). An experienced Educator in Community Services, Disability and currently working in Aged Care. She views her skills as a Reiki Practitioner as complimentary to her nursing knowledge and further skill development to provide balanced, holistic and quality care. LINDA GRAHAM - Register Nurse Workshop title: Montessori Activity Planning Linda is the Nurse Educator with the Dementia Behavioural Management Advisory Service. She provides training to residential and community care staff on all aspects of dementia and provision of care. Linda started her nursing career as a Mothercraft Nurse and has worked through all age groups ending with the elderly, especially dementia care you could say she has grown up with her career! Linda views rehabilitative therapies as a serious component of quality dementia care. SHARON LOVELL - Respite House Manager Workshop title: How to use sensory therapy in everyday care Sharon manages the old vicarage community respite service which provides both day and night respite for people living with dementia. Sensory therapy is incorporated into everyday activities at the Vicarage and has allowed clients to share and enjoy many activities. Sharon has also helped many care facilities to establish their own sensory rooms.

TaKeTiNa with Christine Giudici - TaKeTiNa Teacher Workshop title: TaKeTiNa in Practice TaKeTiNa is a unique transformational music learning process, which guides participants into experiencing polyrhythms and cross rhythms in their bodies and voice. Although highly musical, the process is deeply relaxing and meditative, and requires no musical experience. This workshop will provide participants practical experience in using TaKeTiNa methods. Participants will leave the workshop being able to take with them techniques for implementing basic TaKeTiNa techniques in their workplace. B. AROMATHERAPY with Maggie Hopkins - Enrolled Nurse/Natural Therapist Workshop title: Smellness and Wellness: Aromatherapy in Aged Care Participants will learn the practical application of aromatherapy for dementia residents. Experience the pleasure and relaxation of hand massage and foot spas. Learn about different blends of essential oils for specific outcomes. C. STORY TELLING with Mark Silver - Social Worker Workshop title: Guidelines and principles for setting up story telling and intergenerational programs This workshop will focus on the practicalities of setting up storytelling projects with older adults in community and residential settings. Focusing on guiding principles, enhancing the power and empowering nature of storytelling.. D. LAUGHTER THERAPY with Robyn Bishop - Community Health Social Worker Workshop title: Laughing from the heart This workshop will provide participants with practical yogic laughter exercises. These consist of a variety of different laughter types interspersed with laughter chanting. The laughter exercises are based on the premise that the brain does not distinguish between forced laughter (the yogic laughter exercises) and spontaneous laughter. E. MUSIC THERAPY with Sally Banks - Music Therapist Workshop title: A practical guide to using music in dementia care This workshop offers hands on exploration of how music therapy works for individuals with dementia and their families. Demonstrates the creative use of percussion instruments with residents /clients/family members. Practical ideas for designing a group/ individual music program. F. CHIME CHOIRS with Sally Banks - Music Therapist Workshop title: How to establish and maintain a bell/chime choir.- no formal musical training required! Participants will gather practical experience in using tuned bells or chimes both as participant and director. The workshop will cover all aspects of the establishing and maintaining the group and a demonstration of the benefit for those living with dementia. G. MONTESSORI with Linda Graham - Registered Nurse Workshop title: Montessori Activity Planning This workshop will provide basic introduction to the use of Montessori in dementia care. It will give participants the opportunity to use Montessori activities and discuss the importance of residents strengths in determining person centered activity programming. H. SENSORY THERAPY with Sharon Lovell - Respite Manager Workshop title: How to use sensory therapy in everyday care This workshop will provide participants with ideas on how in implement sensory therapy into care environments. It will enable participants to use and explore the many options available in sensory equipment. Barriers to implementation will be discussed and resource information provided. I. REIKI with Cindy Fenton - Reiki Master Workshop title: Warm heart, gentle hands Participants will be introduced to the practical uses of Reiki, and have an opportunity to experience both the giving and receiving of this therapy, in order to gain more understanding of the process. You will learn the hand positions for various problems, and discuss their application in the workplace and at home. For those who wish to develop proficiency, further options will be presented for continued training. J. ART THERAPY 1 with Dr Pat Baines - Art Therapist Workshop title: Spinning stories and painting poems This workshop will provide you with practical advice of how to facilitate creative writing activities with individuals living with dementia. K. ART THERAPY 2 with Dr Pat Baines - Art Therapist Workshop title: Empowering the inner artist Learn ways to ways to assist individuals living with dementia to paint and draw.
