3 OVERVIEW Australia s research training system is strong, as demonstrated by our research standing among OECD countries. However, while Australia ranks highly in terms of citations and quantity of publications indicating quality research output and international recognition, we have one of the lowest numbers of researchers employed in business enterprises (3 researchers in business per 1000 workers compared with 14 in Finland and 7 in Canada). NISA identifies research and research skills as a necessary contributor to innovation, competition and productivity. It is essential for our world class researchers to collaborate with all forms of enterprise if they are to take their role in shaping new industry sectors. CQUniversity has always pursued research that delivers economic and social value through strong engagement with industry partners. Indeed, CQU aspires to be the most engaged university in Australia with an emphasis on regionally relevant activity with global competitiveness. Forging strong relationships across the public and private sectors delivers real and mutual benefits to industry, business, the community, and the University s staff and students. This round table focuses on how partnering for research and innovation can directly benefit the Communities Services Sector. A select group of stakeholders from the university, government, not-for-profits, and SMEs are invited to discuss opportunities for research collaboration and innovation. The roundtable will explore a range of partnership models such as work-based experience by research candidates, data sharing, knowledge transfer, joint research projects, and others National Innovation and Science Agenda (2015), CQUniversity recognised as the first (and only) Changemaker campus in Australia by Ashoka U (

5 SPEAKERS A/Prof Jennie Barr, Deputy Dean Research, CQUniversity School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Futures Jennie Barr is the Deputy Dean of Research in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Futures. She is passionate about research, capacity building and knowledge transfer into workforce and practice. Whilst she is a nurse and midwife, she engages in multidisciplined research knowing that health care professionals do not work in isolation. She believes in the synergy of many and encourages cross-institutional collaboration. Jennie is currently working with industry and overseas partners workforce development which includes capacity building and mentoring is a primary focus. Sharon Winocur, Executive Director, B/HERT Sharon Winocur joined B/HERT in August 2008 after previously having held senior executive positions in the Victorian and Queensland Public Service following a successful university career as both an academic and an administrator. Following an academic career in psychology, Sharon established the first Office of Equal Opportunity and UQ- Link at the University of Queensland. UQ-Link, a specialist program for academically able students from low SES backgrounds who demonstrated great potential is still operating over 20 years later. Sharon joined the Queensland Public Service in 1991 and the Victorian Public Service in During her public service career, she held various senior executive positions including Director of Equity, Human Resources and Industrial Relations. Sharon also maintained active research programs during this time through the ARC Linkage and Discovery grants programs.

6 SPEAKERS Associate Professor Susan Kinnear is currently the Dean of Graduate Studies, and well as a Senior Research Fellow within the Centre for Tourism and Regional Opportunities. Her research background is in regional development, with expertise in regional innovation, regional business, regional policy and collaborative platforms. A/ Prof Susan Kinnear, Dean of Graduate Studies, CQUniversity Josh Ariens, Research Partnerships Manager, CQUniversity A/Prof Tania Signal, Deputy Dean Research, CQUniversity Josh is the Research Partnerships Manager for the Division of Research within CQUniversity. His chief responsibility is developing the capability of the University s Schools and Research Institutes/Centres to engage with SMEs and industry organisations in partnering for collaborative impact. Josh and his team support the strategic goals of the University by developing new business partnerships to provide research solutions and impact. Dr Tania Signal received her PhD in Psychology from Waikato University. In 2003 she moved to Australia and took up a Lectureship at Central Queensland University, and is now Associate Professor and Deputy Dean (Research) for the School of Human, Health & Social Sciences. Tania has developed a comprehensive research program investigating a range of maladaptive behaviours including interpersonal violence, child abuse and deliberate harm to animals. Much of this involves collaborative work with community partners resulting in tangible benefits for all involved. Tania is a member of the Australian Animal Studies Group, the Queensland Centre for Domestic & Family Violence, the Appleton Institute and a Charter Scholar Member of the Animals & Society Institute (USA).

Davina works as a Lecturer at CQUniversity and teaches into Allied Health and Social Work. Davina Taylor, PhD Student, CQUniversity Eve Tam, PhD Student, CQUniversity Carmel Marshall, Planning & Development Manager, Centacare Huiyi (Eve) Tam is a PhD candidate at CQUniversity, studying a research topic on psychological treatment (cognitive behavioural therapy) for youth anxiety. The study focuses on youth (12-19 years) participants in the Central Queensland region, recruited through cooperation with Headspace Rockhampton. Her supervisors are Professor Kevin Ronan (CQUniversity) and Dr Jacqueline Feather (Auckland University of Technology). Carmel Marshall is Planning and Development Manager at CentacareCQ. Carmel s focus is to help ensure the organisation is sustainable and relevant into the future, thus requiring an understanding of the influences on the environment in which CentacareCQ will be operating over the next five to 15 years. This picture then informs the decisions and actions taken in the current environment to move CentacareCQ towards its desired future. Planning for a sustainable workforce is a significant part of this work. Carmel s previous roles with the Institute for Sustainable Regional Development and Rockhampton Regional Development Limited included research and project work in sustainable regional development.

8 SPEAKERS Ms Suzie Christensen, CEO, Anglicare Central Queensland Suzie has worked in the not-for-profit sector in central Queensland for 18 years, and has a deep connection to the communities and people of the region. Following 15 years involvement in natural resource and environmental management, including seven as CEO of the Fitzroy Basin Association, Suzie joined Anglicare Central Queensland as CEO in Anglicare Central Queensland offers a diverse range of services including community and affordable housing, child protection and community services including counselling, support for people with a disability and mental health conditions and support for families and youth. Rod Boddice, CEO, There4U Community Wellbeing Services Rod Boddice is the Chief Executive Officer of There4U, a not-for-profit organisation providing primary mental health and allied health services across Central Queensland. The organisation particularly focuses on the health needs of rural communities in its service planning. Rod is also responsible for managing Headspace Rockhampton as There4U is funded as the lead agency of the headspace Rockhampton Consortium. Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Initiative aimed at addressing the mental health and wellbeing of young Australians in the 12 to 25 year age groups.

He is a member of the CQ Executive Leadership Network, an Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) Executive Fellow, current Chair of livewellcq, a primary health and human services partnership and Chair of the Community Leadership Board for Every Child Deserves Every Chance. He has vast experience in Human Services having worked for a number of Qld Government agencies in various parts of the state over the past 30 years. Belinda Drew, CEO, Community Services Industry Alliance Belinda Drew s passion for social investment and innovation has helped launch our developmental and collaborative agenda. She is a tremendous asset to CSIA and the wider Community Services Industry. Over the last decade, Belinda has successfully led Foresters Community Finance through a period of considerable change and cultural evolution, focusing on Australia s social investment market in her role as CEO. Over the term of her employment, Belinda developed her a strong skillset in organisational management and strategic leadership, harnessing and further honing her knowledge across social enterprise, social entrepreneurship, microfinance, community finance and social investment. Belinda has considerable industry experience, spanning 20 years and various social sectors.
