Next review December 2021 Approval date October 2016 Strategic purpose statement Graduate profile This qualification is designed to provide the beauty sector with therapists who have the skills and knowledge to analyse, plan and provide a broad range of beauty services. This qualification is intended for learners who have little or no prior learning or experience in beauty services. The beauty sector will benefit by having beauty therapists with the skills and knowledge to competently provide a range of beauty services. Graduates will be capable of working under broad guidance with a degree of self-management in a beauty therapy context. Graduates will be able to: Implement professional standards and expectations relating to the beauty workplace including all relevant health, safety and hygiene obligations. Undertake a full consultation with clients, build client rapport, and perform an in-depth need analysis for beauty services and product needs to develop a beauty treatment plan. Apply knowledge of natural nail services, products, and tools, and related skills, to meet client s needs in accordance with industry standards and current and emerging trends. Apply knowledge of facial and skin care services, and related skills, to meet client s needs, during and after treatment, in accordance with industry standards and current and emerging trends. Apply knowledge of manual hair removal and body care services, and related skills, to meet client s needs, during and after treatment, in accordance with industry standards Qualification Reference 3444 Page 1 of 5

Apply knowledge of relevant aspects of chemistry, physics and biology in a beauty services context to provide effective services and ensure client comfort and safety. Provide nutritional advice specific to the skin which is complementary for healthy skin, hair and nails. Apply knowledge of skin and skin-related disease and disorders to identify symptoms and advise clients of possible implications in terms of proposed beauty services. Provide reception and client sales services and carry out associated transactions and administration. Contribute to the operation of a small beauty sector business or client base. Education pathway Employment pathway This qualification may build on the New Zealand Certificate in Makeup and Skin Care (Introduction) (Level 3), and may lead to the: New Zealand Diploma in Beauty Therapy (Level 5) [Ref: 3445] New Zealand Certificate in Spa Therapy (Level 5) [Ref: 3457] New Zealand Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage (Level 5) [Ref: 2740]. Graduates of this qualification may be employed in positions such as: Beauty therapist Cosmetic product company representative. Qualification specifications Qualification award Evidence requirements for assuring consistency This qualification can be awarded by any education organisation which has an approved programme of study or programme of industry training leading to the qualification. Evidence will include the following: Employer surveys to determine if graduates of the qualification are achieving graduate profile outcomes. A range of workplace evidence demonstrating that graduates meet the graduate profile outcomes. A portfolio of assessment evidence from graduates over a variety of services and clients, e.g. photographs, client cards. Any other relevant evidence as appropriate. National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 1) [Ref: 0928] or equivalent. General conditions for the programme leading to the qualification General conditions for programme Programmes must include practice of skills within a realistic workplace environment. Industry standards are defined as the practices and procedures that meet the requirements of relevant legislation, guides and codes of practice, ethical codes of conduct, and industry manuals where relevant, which collectively provide a quality assurance standard that applies to this qualification. 5 Transition information Replacement information This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Beauty Services (Beautician) (Level 4) [Ref: 1046]. The last date for entry into programmes leading to the replaced qualification is 31 December 2018 when the replaced qualifications will be designated expiring. The last date to meet the requirements of the replaced qualification is 31 December 2020 when the qualifications will be discontinued. From that date no results can be reported against the replaced qualification. People currently working towards the replaced qualification must complete its requirements by 31 December 2020 or transfer their results to the replacement qualification. It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. However, anyone who feels that they have been disadvantaged may appeal to the New Zealand Hair and Beauty Industry Training Organisation Incorporated at the address below.
