Entry Criteria Applicants are more likely to succeed on this programme if they have achieved at least 12 credits in literacy (English) and 10 credits in numeracy (Maths) towards the National te in Educational Achievement at Level 1 or successful completion of Bay of Plenty Polytechnic te in Tertiary Study Level 2. Preferred school subjects: NCEA Level 1 or 2 combinations of English/Maori, Science including Biology, Mathematics and Computing all provide appropriate academic preparation. Mature applicants with life skills who have not achieved formal credits to the criteria identified above, but can provide equivalent ability and experience, are encouraged to apply. As the programmed work experience will involve confidentiality and handling pharmaceuticals, all applicants will undertake to complete and return a Police Clearance Check (INCIS) form. This is undertaken at the request of the Pharmacy Advisory Committee and the Pharmacy Industry Training Organisation. Students also participate in a confidentiality agreement with the work experience employer. English Language Requirements for International Students International applicants may be required to show evidence of language competency. Level 1-4 programme IELTS overall score of 5.5 or a TOEFL score of 500 Credit Recognition Prior learning the recognition of prior learning is a different process to credit transfer. Prior learning can include relevant employment experience, experiential, attested skills or other formal education. Only learning relevant to the learning outcomes for the programme students are enrolling in will be considered and this must be assessed. Substantial evidence of the details relating to the prior learning must be presented by the student. Interested students may request application forms from the School Office and will receive guidance from trained staff in completing them. This institution acknowledges and values the prior knowledge and skills that students may bring to a programme. In general the institution does not require students to repeat attendance, assessment and / or learning activities associated with knowledge and skills that they may already have gained by formal means (having completed an entire (or parts of) other programmes), and / or informal means (relevant life and /or work experience). 34 When people apply to be selected for entry into a programme, or when they have already enrolled in a programme, they may identify components which cover any knowledge and / or skills which they feel they have already gained, either by formal or informal means. In these circumstances they may wish to apply for credit recognition. Cross Credit and Transfer of Credit Students will need to contact the programme co-ordinator, complete a Transfer/Cross Credit form and supply supporting information. Attendance Students are expected to attend ALL scheduled / supervised learning, teaching and work experience sessions, and attendance on this programme is monitored on two levels: 1 a high expectation for attendance is set to assist student retention and completion (a roll is maintained, but not for a pass/fail sanction), and 2 30 days verified work experience is required by the Pharmacy ITO to pass certain unit standards. Unless the student passes these units they cannot pass the overall Bay of Plenty Polytechnic programme. Failure to attend all scheduled / supervised learning, teaching and work experience sessions may adversely affect students potential to succeed in the programme, and may also adversely affect their eligibility (if applicable) to receive loans and / or allowances. Numerous unit standards within this programme contain the following note: Credit for this unit standard may not be awarded unless assessment is supported by evidence of a minimum of 30 working days practice in a non-simulated pharmacy workplace environment. This evidence is to be supplied in a pharmacist verifier s statement. To meet these requirements, students undertake 3 x 2 week blocks of work experience within terms 2, 3 and 4. Students who for whatever reason do not achieve the minimum 30 day requirements during the normal programme duration, will be required to make up the time missed during other available days prior to programme completion. Students are responsible for notifying school support staff of any absence, by the first scheduled class session of the first day of absence. School support staff are responsible for recording receipt of such notification in the student s file, and for advising the programme coordinator and tutors of student absence. In keeping with normal employment practices, any absence which extends beyond three days is required to be supported, on the student s return, by a medical certificate or a written explanation signed by the student and countersigned by a recognised health care practitioner, a registered counsellor or spiritual adviser. This explanation is placed in the student s file and may be referred to in support of the student s subsequent application for any extension, aegrotat, compassionate or special consideration in respect of assessment. 35 Assessment Regulations This programme is assessed using competency based assessment methods. Pre-moderated assessment materials, purchased from the Pharmacy ITO or Retail ITO, will be used for most of the unit standard content. Assessment in Te Reo Māori Students are welcome to undertake assessment in Te Reo Māori and should give reasonable notice to the programme coordinator prior to an assessment s due date, to ensure that arrangements can be made for judgements to be made by appropriate assessors. Assessment Deadlines For this programme the expectation is that: Assessments will be submitted by the due date They are submitted to the tutor and/or programme coordinator assigned to the pharmacy programme. Students who: do not submit an assessment to the school support staff by the due date and time and / or do not sit a test or examination on the scheduled day and / or do not attempt any practical assessment activity which may have been timetabled to occur once only during the programme (for example, a a practical first aid demonstration test); may be affected by one or more of the following: their assessment / test / examination being marked as if it had been received on time, but 10% per day late will be deducted from the grade / mark assigned. In the case of mastery / competence-based assessment, or any missed practical assessment activity which may have been timetabled to occur once only during the programme assessments, this will result in an Incomplete losing their entitlement to resubmit their assessments and / or resit parallel tests or examinations, and / or attempt any missed practical assessment activity which may have been timetabled to occur once only during the programme. Students may avoid the above penalties if they have first obtained an extension to the original assessment deadline (please see below), or have been excused for missing the original assessment deadline for other reasons (please see below). Students have the right to appeal any decision made in respect of the above. Bay of Plenty Polytechnic te Retail Pharmacy Assistant Level 3 34 te in Retail Pharmacy Assistant Level 3 Page 34 of 62

36 Extensions All assessments are to be completed by the due date. Extensions are granted sparingly and usually only for medical or bereavement reasons. Students who anticipate difficulty in submitting assessments and / or sitting tests or examinations, and / or attempting any missed practical assessment activity which may have been timetabled to occur once only during the programme by the due dates, may request their tutors for extensions subject to their: making such requests no later than three working days prior to the due dates negotiation with their tutor and signing an agreement which documents the conditions (including any additional assistance which may be required under which the resubmission/ resit/ re-attempt are to be conducted.) Extension date for assessments must be within the current academic year and the extension date must be specified. Students have the right to appeal any decision made in respect of the above. Marking / Returns Unless otherwise advised by means of written course / programme information, students should expect to have assessment results notified to them no later than twenty (20) working days after the due dates. Students have the right to appeal any decision made in respect of the above. Re-Assessment For those students who do not achieve competency on their first formal assessment attempt, a maximum of TWO free reassessment / resubmission is available. For the purposes of this programme, a formal assessment attempt is the performance of an observed, practical summative assessment task, or the hand-in for marking of a completed assessment task by the date specified by the tutor. For any single assessment task, students will be able to resit TWICE only: to resubmit an assessment activity in which they have not been able to demonstrate their knowledge / competence at their first attempt and / or to resit a parallel test or examination in which they have not been able to demonstrate their knowledge / competence at their first attempt and / or to re-attempt an assessment activity which may have been timetabled to occur once only during the programme. Subject to their negotiating and signing an agreement which documents the conditions (including additional assistance) under which the resubmission / resit / re-attempt are to be conducted. Students who, having exercised their re-assessment entitlement, and who remain unable to demonstrate their knowledge / competence as detailed in the assessment schedule, are invited Bay of Plenty Polytechnic te Retail Pharmacy Assistant Level 3 35 te in Retail Pharmacy Assistant Level 3 Page 35 of 62

37 to return / re-enrol the following academic year to repeat the relevant teaching, learning and assessment activity, because their academic records for the current academic year will have the relevant entry made against the appropriate component of the course / programme. Students have the right to appeal any decision made in respect of the above. Special Assessment Circumstances (SAC) Students who, due to circumstances beyond their control, miss a test, exam, practical assessment or an assignment deadline; or consider their performance in a test, exam, practical assessment or assignment to have been adversely affected, for example by illness and/or injury suffered by self or by members of family/whanau; may apply for Special Assessment Circumstances. Award of the SAC will be approved by the Board of Studies. Students may apply for a SAC subject to: a written application being made no later than five working days after the assessment has been completed to the Programme Coordinator, and the application being accompanied by supporting documentation such as a medical certificate; a statement written and signed by a counselor; a birth, marriage or death certificate or published notice of a birth, marriage or death. The Programme Coordinator will assess the application along with the subject tutor, Group Leader and Academic Adviser. Students may be offered the chance to sit a new assessment activity or resubmit their original assessment work (in the case of unit standards based assessment), gain an aegrotat pass, or some other appropriate assessment. In the case of SAC aegrotat in achievement based assessment, consideration is given to the student having established a track record by completion of a minimum of half of the assessment activities required within the course. Aegrotat consideration is made at the end of the course/programme during the PAC process. In the case of a missed practical assessment activity which may have been timetabled to occur once only during the programme, it may not be possible for a student to have established a track record at all. In these cases a SAC will be declined. A recommendation for SAC will be forwarded to the Board of Studies for approval. Academic records of students who have been awarded a SAC pass will have the relevant entry made against the appropriate component/s of the course. A grade / mark may be assigned to the component/s. Students have the right to appeal any decision made in respect of the above. Bay of Plenty Polytechnic te Retail Pharmacy Assistant Level 3 36 te in Retail Pharmacy Assistant Level 3 Page 36 of 62

46 Programme Evaluation by Students All Bay of Plenty programmes are evaluated at least once per year. The purpose of evaluation is firstly to seek feedback from students on the polytechnic s, school s and programme s delivery of quality products and services which meet their expectations and needs and secondly to improve the institution s, school s and programme s delivery of quality products and services. The Director Academic and / or delegate is responsible for conducting evaluations according to the current policy, procedure and documentation. Evaluation outcomes are summarised, and any concerns / issues raised are incorporated in an improvement plan. The summary and the improvement plan are submitted to the School Leadership Team for consideration. Once approved, the programme team implements the improvement plan and its progress and achievement is reported to the School Leadership Team throughout the year until such time as completion is achieved. Occupational Safety and Health Head Lice Students who have contracted head lice are not permitted to work on a client or classmate. If you suspect you or a client/peer has head lice please advise the tutor in charge to confirm. Open Wounds Are unsightly and should be covered to prevent cross infection. Students are advised to talk to their tutor for advice on how to manage this. Students should advise their tutor if they are affected by any cosmetic products during the programme. Posture/Micro pauses Cosmetologists spend a lot of time on their feet each day, often carrying out repetitive tasks and thus it is important to ensure you take regular pauses to relieve tension. Watch your body position when standing and sitting, keep feet flat on the floor and straight backs, shake arms and hands regularly, move frequently to reduce muscle tension. This is also important to consider during make-up application, facials, manicures and pedicures.
