Main educational aims of the programme The MSc in Advanced Practice (Health) is designed to provide: a rigorous academic course of study that enhances the practitioner s knowledge of holistic assessment, treatment and management of health and illness, and develops clinical examination and case management skills appropriate to their practice area; a range of appropriate learning, teaching and assessment practices to develop the appropriate knowledge, skills and competencies for students to become effective and reflective Advanced Practitioners in a care setting; opportunities for critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of theories, policies and practices relevant to Advanced Practice (Health); an appreciation of, and ability to contribute towards the implementation and development of policies and practices relating to health provision; to facilitate improved decision making skills and their application within practice; an opportunity to conduct a sustained systematic enquiry in an area relevant to advanced practice; professionals who have been working at Practitioner level, with a route through to M level study, to enable them to become Advanced Practitioners. 13. Programme outcomes The programme provides opportunities for students to achieve and demonstrate the following learning outcomes: 14. Knowledge and understanding of A 1. The development and manifestation of long-term and acute illness, the therapeutic and medical interventions and disease management. A.2. Knowledge of physical examination techniques and interpretation of information from a variety of findings. A.3 Critical understanding of the pathophysiology of disease development and its diagnosis and management. A.4. Learning and reflective practice theories and their application in the workplace setting for the health care professional in the context of Advanced Practice. A.5 Knowledge and critical awareness of the range of methodologies in health research A.6 Critical understanding of public health and the role of advanced practice within it.

2 A.7 Place and application of teaching in practice by professional bodies. A.8 Leadership and management of change theory and their application to current practice in the workplace. Cognitive skills B.1 Provide a critical account of evidence-based interventions, policy, and management practice in health assessment, management and development. Assess the physical health of clients and be able to document a client s health history. D.2. Assess the holistic health needs of a client. D.3. 3 15. Teaching, learning & assessment Core knowledge and understanding is acquired through lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, work based learning in health care and independent study. For example, APH403 provides students with the opportunity to learn about the application of health assessment knowledge in their workplace with the support of a mentor. 15a) Knowledge and understanding is assessed through examinations (clinical and academic), essays, portfolios and presentations. For example, in APH402 students are required to undertake a reflective analysis of practice, providing them with an opportunity to integrate knowledge gained on the Course with practice experiences. 15b) Cognitive skills are promoted and delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops, group discussions, tutorials and independent study. For example, in APH402 students are required to critically interpret and make appropriate recommendations for patient care, based on clinical data gathered from patient assessment. Furthermore, in APH444 students are required to design and execute a sustained piece of research which particularly requires an ability to develop research questions based on a sound grasp of relevant theory. The variety of assessment methods employed across the programme all place emphasis on the learner s ability to demonstrate cognitive skills through the production of written papers, portfolios and presentations. Assessment and education opportunities within practice will be supported by University approved mentors and enhance the practical application of this programme to the Advanced Practitioner (Health). For example, in APH404, students are required to present a case study of a client who has an acute condition, demonstrating skills of analysis, interpretation, synthesis and sound judgement. 15c) Key Skills Communication skills, numeric and ICT, interpersonal and teamwork skills, self management and professional development skills are promoted and delivered through lectures, workshops, work based learning in health care settings and tutorials and through detailed guidelines to students on the requirements of course work, portfolios and presentations. For example, in APH499 students are required to develop an oral presentation and respond appropriately to searching questions. 15d) Subject specific Key transferable skills are assessed through coursework, portfolios, presentations and observed clinical structured examinations. These methods place emphasis on the student s ability to demonstrate the full range of transferable skills through the production of written and oral presentations. Formative and summative assessments provide feedback to learners on their performance. For example, in APH402, APH403, APH407 and APH408 students are required to reflect on practice which will enable them to personally develop within their professional context. Subject specific skills are provided through lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials and independent study. In APH403, further professional learning is provided through the opportunity for work-based learning, which also has a reflective element. Furthermore, participation in discussions in class, facilitate inter-professional learning, and this extends to skills as well as knowledge development. Assessment The method of assessment of skills is varied, dependent on the nature of the skill. The variety of methods includes examinations, assignments and presentations. For example APH402 requires students to undertake an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).

Sub-award at Level 7: CPS: Awareness of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies Practice (Level 7: 20 credits): APH409 CPS: Flying Start England (Level 7: 30 CATS): APH445 PGCert Non-Medical Prescribing [NMC approved]: NMP401, NMP402 and NMP403 PGCHE (Teacher) [NMC approved]: APH415, APH416 and APH417 Postgraduate Diploma: Postgraduate Diploma: PGCert, plus APH499, plus at least one more module from APH401, APH402, APH404, APH405, APH406, APH407, NMP401, NMP402, APH415 or APH416, plus one other module from the APH map. Masters: PGDip, plus APH444 Notes: Students who previously completed Postgraduate Certificate in Non-Medical Prescribing or the PGCHE(Teacher) may apply to transfer credit (APL process) against an award in MSc Advanced Practice (Health). However, a student initially enrolling in MSc Advanced Practice (Health) may not also claim the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Non-Medical Prescribing nor the PGCHE(Teacher) For CPS: Non-Medical Prescribing is normally completed within one year, with a maximum of 2 years. There is not a minimum time, but the NMC recommends one year. Code and Title CAT Points APH401: Management Of Long Term Conditions APH402: Health Assessment And Diagnostics Immediately prior to registering on this module, students will be required to demonstrate that they have a current registration with a relevant profession regulatory body. Students are expected to have a good knowledge of anatomy and physiology. APH403: Demonstrating Work Based Competency In Health Practice APH402 Health Assessment and Diagnosis or equivalent. 5 APH405: The Context Of Advanced Professional Health Practice APH406: Public Health 20 SEM1 APH407: Teaching, Learning And Assessment In Practice Students will be required to have access to an area of teaching practice and be supervised by a qualified practice teacher/ practice educator. APH408: Work Based Learning Students should have access to a workplace setting, in either a paid or voluntary capacity. 20 SEM1 or SEM2 APH409: Awareness Of Cognitive And Behavioural Therapies Practice APH410: End Of Life Care Cannot be taken by students who have completed Dip Palliative Care and those who have passed AHS335. APH412: Principles Of A Whole Person Approach To Health Care Students must have a prior qualification/experience within an area of medical or social work professions. They will require the support of their manager and a medical supervisor. Prerequisites: Take NMP401, and NMP402 NMP403: Non-Medical Prescribing Within The Context Of Advanced Practice Students registered on the Postgraduate Certificate in Non-medical Prescribing.Students should be employed within a health setting and work within a capacity where they have demonstrated competent practice within health assessment and or SEM2-3 or SEM2-3

6 diagnostics and could incorporate a prescribing role. They will require the support of their manager and a Designated Medical Practitioner who will act as their supervisor. Corequisites: Take NMP401, and NMP402 SWP401: Foundations In Leadership And Management Students on Post Qualifying Leadership and Management (Social Work) and linked awards only. SWP403: Systematic Approach To The Management Of Risk And Protection SWP404: Critical Issues In Staff And Resource Management SWP405: Inter-Agency Working To Improve Outcomes For Children 20 SEM1 APH 403 Demonstrating Work-based Competency in Health Practice is a co-requisite of APH Health Assessment and Diagnostics. Route requirements For the PG Certificate in Advanced Practice (Health) there are two compulsory modules (APH402 - Health Assessment and Diagnostics and APH403 Demonstrating Workbased Competency in Health Practice) and one of six core modules. For the PG Diploma in Advanced Practice (Health) students must have gained the PG Certificate and successfully passed one compulsory module (APH 499 Methods of Enquiry) and two additional modules, one of which must be a core module. For the MSc in Advanced Practice (Health) students must have gained the PG Diploma and successfully pass one further compulsory module (APH 444 Dissertation). Award requirements To qualify for the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Practice (Health) students must achieve a total of 60 credits by successfully passing two compulsory modules (APH 402 and APH 403) and one of six core modules. To qualify for the award of PG Diploma in Advanced Practice (Health) students must achieve the PG Certificate plus a total of a further 60 credits by successfully passing one compulsory module (APH 499) and one of six core modules. To qualify for the award of MSc in Advanced Practice (Health) students must achieve the PG Diploma plus a total of a further 60 credits by successfully passing one compulsory module (APH 444).
