3 PRESIDENT AND CEO, HOLY CROSS HEALTH WE ARE A STRONG AND GROWING HEALTH CARE SYSTEM In recent years, Holy Cross Health has invested more than $450 million in historic expansions of health care facilities and services in Montgomery County, with the goal of anticipating and proactively meeting the health care needs of our diverse and changing communities. Last October, we opened Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility serving upper Montgomery County residents. In May, we expanded access to affordable primary care for those facing financial barriers by opening the Kevin J. Sexton fourth Holy Cross Health Center, in Germantown. And as an owner of Maryland Physicians Care, the fourth largest Medicaid-managed care organization in Maryland, we continue to enroll newly qualified members of our community into a comprehensive insurance program. Today, Holy Cross Health stands as a robust health care system of connected hospitals, health centers, primary care sites, and community outreach and education programs. A BRIGHT FUTURE In November, we will celebrate the $190 million expansion and modernization of Holy Cross Hospital with the opening of the new South Building (see page 6). This momentous occasion will make Holy Cross Health the only health care system in Montgomery and Prince George s counties to provide private hospital rooms to all patients. Holy Cross Health faces the future with a spirit of optimism and significant strengths. Most important is our strong, stable and dedicated staff. Through innovative partnerships, we are successfully attracting and retaining highly regarded physicians, and we continue to have the largest medical staff in the region. The financial strength of Holy Cross Health allows us to reinvest in our facilities, our employees and the latest technology. All are essential elements in our efforts to care for all of our patients and improve the health of our communities in an affordable and sustainable way. Holy Cross Health s 50-year history of providing access to high-quality, compassionate health care for all began with our founders, the Sisters of the Holy Cross, who committed to meeting the health care needs of the community, whatever and wherever those needs may be. We are proud to continue that work. Holy Cross Health has expanded primary care services for community members by opening a fourth health center. The new Germantown location will improve access to quality health care and includes pediatric services. Pictured at the Grand Opening Celebration on May 20 are (L-R): Montgomery County Council President George Leventhal; Theora Browning, member, Montgomery Cares Advisory Board and a former Holy Cross Health Center patient; Annice Cody, president, Holy Cross Health Network; Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett; and Holy Cross Health President and CEO Kevin J. 4 EXPERT Gynecologic Surgery AT HOLY CROSS GERMANTOWN HOSPITAL Joy Gerst has everything she ever wanted and a couple of things she prefers to live without. The 61 year old from Germantown is a mother to three, grandmother of one with another on the way. Her successful career in schools in Montgomery County is nearing the 30-year mark. She also has a family history of ovarian cancer and a greater risk of developing the disease. I had been meaning to have my ovaries removed for some time, Joy says. But life got in the way. Life included previous gynecologic surgeries and scar tissue that complicated any further procedures. I told my gynecologist I was ready to have my remaining fallopian tube and ovary removed, she explains. In order to perform Joy s complex surgery using minimally invasive techniques, she would need the skills of an experienced gynecologic surgeon. Holy Cross Health specialists working at Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital perform more than 1,100 gynecologic and gynecologic oncology inpatient surgeries each year, more in Maryland than any other health system or hospital. Our minimally invasive gynecologic surgery program is recognized for excellence, quality and innovation and has earned a reputation for groundbreaking clinical care and research. ADVANCED MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY Scarring from previous surgeries makes any procedure trickier, says Albert Steren, MD, medical director, Gynecologic Oncology and Albert Steren, MD Minimally Invasive Gynecology, Holy Cross Health. Scar tissue causes organs to stick to one another. So before we can remove a patient s ovaries and tubes, or uterus, we need to separate other organs and vessels from the adjacent structures to create a good visual field, he explains. In late June, Joy came to Holy Cross Germantown Hospital for her procedure. Although Dr. Steren didn t promise me he could perform the procedure laparoscopically, I trusted him from the start, Joy says. During her surgery, several small incisions were made in Joy s abdomen, creating ports to thread a video camera and surgical instruments through. Real-time images on the video screen guided Dr. Steren s hands. And as he predicted, scar tissue had formed on the organs surrounding her ovary and fallopian tube. But he disentangled them and completed the minimally invasive surgery successfully. After the procedure, while I was still in recovery, Dr. Steren came by and the minute I saw his big smile I knew that all went well, Joy remembers. Just hours after surgery I was resting at home. For those patients who may need to spend the night, the spacious private rooms at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital have comfortable furniture, private bathrooms, cable television and Internet access. Two weeks after her surgery, Joy was back to her routine, feeling good and more than a little relieved to have it all behind her. A MULTITUDE OF SURGICAL SPECIALTIES Gynecologic surgery is just one of the many procedures our team of experts perform at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, says Ricardo Cook, MD Ricardo Cook, MD, chair of Surgery. The team represents nearly every surgical subspecialty including orthopedic, urologic, and colon and rectal, to name just a few and offers the most advanced surgical treatment for the full range of conditions. 4 Holy Cross Health Today To find a physician or surgeon at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, visit HolyCrossHealth.org or call

6 HOLY CROSS HOSPITAL S ON NOVEMBER 1, 2015, THE DOORS WILL OPEN ON A BRAND NEW, The opening sets a new standard of care by being the first health system in the region to provide all private patient rooms at Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, says Kevin J. Sexton, president and chief executive officer, Holy Cross Health. It s another historic moment in the more than 50-year history of Holy Cross Hospital. The South Building expansion plus the modernization of more than 40,000 square feet throughout the hospital demonstrates our commitment to providing the highest possible quality of care to our community, says Judith Rogers, president, Holy Cross Hospital. The seven-story addition a new landmark on the Capital Beltway houses 150 private patient rooms in critical care, intermediate care and medical-surgical units. This new building ensures that all patient rooms throughout Holy Cross Hospital will be private an important element that is transforming the patient experience. The benefits of private rooms include reduced risk of infections, explains Garry Ruben, MD, president of the medical and dental staff at Holy Cross Hospital. Privacy also enhances rest and recuperation, which has been shown to shorten hospital stays. Private rooms also allow patients, families and caregivers to have more open and meaningful conversations. Every room has generous space for added comfort, including visiting with friends and loved ones for emotional support to help foster recovery. The modernized space also is helping the hospital strengthen its pioneering senior care. A designated space for older adults has been included in the renovated surgery department. An all new central utility plant in the environmentally friendly addition provides efficient heating, cooling and emergency power for the whole hospital. The green design meets all the latest standards for sustainability and the project is CLINICAL GOLD Holy Cross Hospital s dedication to creating a culture of clinical excellence is widely recognized and celebrated. These recent awards of recognition are a testament to our reputation as one of the region s best hospitals. n Holy Cross Hospital has once again been ranked among the best hospitals in Maryland and in the Washington, D.C., region in the annual listing of America s Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. n The Neuroscience and Heart Failure services have been recognized for their high performance in the annual ranking by U.S. News & World Report. n The Breast Center was granted its second, threeyear accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. n The Hip Replacement, Knee Replacement and Spine Surgery services have been awarded a Gold Seal of Approval by The Joint Commission. n The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit has been recognized as a Level 4 Epilepsy Center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC). n The Stroke Program has been awarded the American Heart Association s 2015 Gold Plus Award and designated an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems, and by The Joint Commission. 8 HOLY CROSS GERMANTOWN HOSPITAL TWIN GIRLS MAKE HISTORY In April, Bethany and Beatriz delighted their parents, doctors and nurses when they became the first set of twins born at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. The event came after months of advanced prenatal care for Alexa Nuñez whose pregnancy was considered high risk due to her age, 38, and her twin pregnancy. Complicating matters further, one baby was in the breech position and the other sideways. For the safest delivery, Alexa had a C-section, scheduled in advance of her due date, explains her doctor, Steven Maggid, MD, Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, a boardcertified OB/GYN. The new Holy Cross Germantown Hospital offered everything Alexa wanted the same expert care as Holy Cross Hospital, with all private maternity suites and flexibility in scheduling her C-section. The all private suites include a sleeper couch and a bassinet so babies can stay with their moms right from the start. Amenities include free Internet service and cable TV, along with room service, selected from an extensive menu. Holy Cross Germantown Hospital s maternity unit Steven Maggid, MD V. Ashok Rangnath, MD is staffed 24/7 by obstetricians, neonatologists and anesthesiologists, and has a Neonatal Unit for newborns who need extra care and monitoring, says V. Ashok Rangnath, MD, chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. The Nuñez family found expert maternity care at Holy Cross Hospital, where their first daughter was born three years ago, and at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, where their twins were born. Sexton / President and CEO, Holy Cross Health Judith Rogers / President, Holy Cross Hospital Doug Ryder / President, Holy Cross Germantown Hospital Annice Cody / President, Holy Cross Health Network A SPIRIT OF GIVING Touched by the story of a fellow church member who was uninsured and needed cancer care, Nehemiah wanted to do something. We ve got to help people in our community and stand up for one another, he says. Nehemiah started thinking about creating an event perhaps a charity run to benefit an institution with similar goals. When he learned about Holy Cross Health s commitment to ensuring access to health care for all, regardless of a patient s ability to pay, he knew he had found the right match. At Holy Cross, uninsured people can get the help they need and are never made to feel judged, explains Nehemiah. Holy Cross Health s financial assistance program offers free or discounted services to patients who qualify. Nehemiah s Building Block 5K, now in its fourth year, is held each October in Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg to benefit patients at Holy Cross.
