Ingenia Care s aim is to help identify support needs and make the care process as easy as possible by assisting every step of the way so you can continue to live independently.

3 Staying healthy and active in your senior years with Ingenia Wellbeing Ingenia Lifestyle has pioneered a ground-breaking new eight week wellbeing program putting you in the driver s seat to improve your health and wellbeing by providing tailored exercise, information, advice and care coordination via a program called Ingenia Wellbeing. An initiative developed by the Ingenia Care team and joined by local health professionals the program supports, improves and maintains the differing needs of women and men delivering tailored, preventative programs. Ingenia Wellbeing is all about encouraging our residents to take charge of their lives and wellbeing through exercise, education and relationships and to maintain this control to live as independently as possible in the years ahead, Janene said. Ingenia Wellbeing s eight week program also arranges referrals to health, care and support services so that residents can get on with enjoying life and ticking off their bucket list. The community camaraderie in these wellbeing groups is really wonderful to experience this is what living a full and independent life is all about. The eight week wellbeing program is available for a small weekly fee for Ingenia Lifestyle residents and prospective residents thinking of joining a community.

Completing the Ingenia Wellbeing program ensures you benefit in a number of ways: Attention and time to assist with your life stage transitioning and planning Allows you to focus on the importance of meaning and achievement in your life Doing something for a cause beyond yourself To develop relationships and social connections that bring meaning to your life Encouraging you to use it, so you don t lose it in regards to strength and balance Preventative health checks and education Knowledge on nutritional changes and food choice Chronic disease management and carer responsibility Supporting a healthy mind Resident Leslie Gray knows better than most, the importance of looking after one s health and wellbeing. The Ingenia Lifestyle Chambers Pines resident suffers from Parkinson s disease and attributes keeping fit in his senior years for the slow progression of his disease. Leslie was one of the first residents to take part in the eight week community-based program during which he participated in walking sessions and leg strengthening, daily outdoor walks, information sessions and tutorials. Sessions provided over the course of the program include information from health professionals and assistance with technology and the internet to stay socially connected. Residents have benefited so much more than expected as they are able to achieve individual goals or work together with their friends and neighbours on similar health and wellness preferences. 6 Ingenia Wellbeing Program Ingenia Wellbeing connects you with relevant, knowledgeable professionals offering a diverse range of services. With you in the driver s seat you are able to set your own agenda, giving you freedom, ownership and control to attend the workshops and then implement the program into your daily routine after the program is finished. Ingenia Wellbeing is held over eight weeks and is split into two sessions with the first hour covering exercise-based topics and the second hour offering health and lifestyle education topics.

9 Extract from the Program: Variety the spice of life For seniors, the National Heart Foundation of Australia encourages improvement of aerobic fitness, muscular strength and flexibility. Aerobic exercises (otherwise known as cardio) are any activities that really get your oxygen flowing such as swimming, cycling and walking. Strength training focuses on tightening core muscles, and can easily be done in the comfort of your own home, while flexibility can be improved through relaxing and stretching exercises such as yoga and tai chi. Those who train together From walking groups, to swimming clubs and yoga on the lawn, there s bound to be something that suits your capability and expertise. Getting out and about with grandchildren is another way to help meet the minimum exercise target for seniors. The Australian Department of Health s national guidelines recommend seniors aged 65 and over do a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity most days. While 30 minutes daily can sound overwhelming, incorporating a variety of activities and staying active with friends can make exercise more of a hobby than a chore. Mind, body and spirit While physical health is important, there s more to health than just fitness. Emotional, intellectual and social wellness play a big a role in overall wellbeing and can be improved by placing equal importance on stimulating mental activity. Keep your mind active by doing crosswords or learning a new skill, strengthen emotional bonds by spending time with loved ones and improve your social wellness by joining social clubs and every day by volunteering to a local charity or organisation. Eating a balanced diet, keeping hydrated, getting enough sleep and having an annual medication review are also important ways to maximise your health and wellness.

10 Planning ahead Planning ahead starts with a conversation about your future. What supports do you have in place from friends, family and health professionals and can your finances take you to where you want to be? Are you clear about your wishes for your estate, your care in the event you have an accident and who you want to make decisions on your behalf? If it is time for you to take stock of your life, these questions may help you commence the conversations about your future and give you more time for ticking off some of your outstanding bucket list items. Here are some check list questions to help you and your family plan ahead: Q. Do you know who you can speak to about planning ahead? Q. Have you made arrangements to start this conversation? Q. Do you have a reliable GP or health professional to assist you? Q. Have you thought about how your home will support you ageing in place? Q. Will you need any in-home support? Q. Do you understand what your contribution to this in-home care may be? Q. Do you have a will? Is it current or have your wishes changed? Q. Have you spoken to a financial planner?

11 What are the next steps? If you would like assistance to continue living independently the next steps are kept simple to help you establish your needs: 1. Call Ingenia Care on to complete and submit an application and consent form to register for care and support services. 2. Think through your choices. This step is to help you really think about how you want to live, what your goals are and what s most important to you to make your life as easy as possible. This will help your adviser to better understand you and your needs. These are some questions you might consider in making your plan: What is important to me? What do I most enjoy doing? Can I still do these things? What makes my life enjoyable and meaningful? What s good right now and what s not? What s preventing me from having an enjoyable and meaningful life? What s missing? What would I have if I could choose anything? What sorts of things might help to improve my day to day life? What support do I need to remain safe and well? Where and when do I want that support to be available? How do I want to be supported and by whom? 3. Ingenia Care will call or visit you to establish your individual or collective needs for care and support services or to register you for a wellbeing program. 4. If you need to be assessed for approval for care funding, Ingenia Care will arrange this for you and once approved can assist you to manage your care budget. 5. Ingenia Care will then connect you to a reputable Care Provider. 6. Ingenia Care can provide advocacy support for the duration of your services to ensure you get maximum benefit from your care funding or simply to help you resolve an issue with your Care Provider.
