2 CEo update A MESSAGE from KEvin J. SEXton, PrESidEnt And CEo Building toward the future Holy Cross Hospital is committed to ensuring that health care is conveniently located for everyone in our community, that everyone has access to care, and that there will be enough health care workers in the future to care for an aging population. Statistics tell the story. According to a Montgomery County study, seniors will make up more than 14 percent of the population in 2020, compared with 8.7 percent in Furthermore, the Kevin J. Sexton, outer areas of Montgomery County, especially President and germantown and gaithersburg, are experiencing CEo significant population growth, especially among the elderly population. At the same time, the state of Maryland is facing a shortage of 10,000 nurses as half the nursing workforce nears retirement just when the health care needs of older adults will reach their peak. Holy Cross Hospital is at the forefront of addressing these issues today and tomorrow by enhancing our services at our Silver Spring site, partnering with Montgomery College to help train the next generation of nurses and working to build a new hospital on the college s germantown Campus. in this issue, you ll read about our new Seniors Ambulatory Surgery Center, located within Holy Cross Hospital. Like the Seniors emergency Center, the center, which provides same-day surgery, is totally devoted to the care of patients age 65 and older. Along with such new programs today, our proposal to build a new hospital in germantown on the Montgomery College campus is recognized by Montgomery County voters as a need for tomorrow. Fully two-thirds of those voters want a new hospital in the northern area of the county, according to a recent survey commissioned by Holy Cross Hospital. Additionally, survey respondents placed great importance on educating the next generation of health care workers to care for the growing population. Recognizing this need, Holy Cross Hospital and Montgomery College have made a commitment to double the number of nursing graduates from Montgomery College over the next five years. The college is the recent recipient of a $235,000 grant from the Maryland Hospital Association s Who Will Care? campaign to increase the number of nursing graduates. Holy Cross Hospital not only provided the funding for the grant but also will supplement it with other financial and in-kind assistance. in addition, our proposed new hospital, along with the existing Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, will offer training opportunities for Montgomery College nursing and allied health students. Both today and tomorrow, Holy Cross Hospital stands ready to meet the needs of the communities we serve. to learn more about our plans, visit our website at holy CroSS hospital CArES: As part of its ongoing and expanding relationship with Montgomery College, holy Cross hospital pledged $250,000 to the Who Will Care? campaign, an initiative established by the Maryland hospital Association. 4 Going strong After two successful hip replacement surgeries, John Euill s only regret is that he didn t have them sooner 4 Holy Cross Health Today

5 John Euill has rubbed elbows with distinguished people from all over the world. The retired U.S. Capitol police officer says, During my 34 years of service, I saw many impressive dignitaries, including the third president of Egypt, Anwar Sadat, and former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela. I also witnessed many frightening events, including riots, protests and bombings. While John has always faced the challenges of being a police officer with courage and fortitude, the idea of hip replacement surgery left him feeling a little uneasy. My sister-in-law had a rough time after having her hip replacement surgery seven years ago, and I chickened out the first time around, the 65-year-old says jokingly. I had never had any type of operation or any broken bones, and I was scared. It was during a trip to South Africa when John realized he could no longer put off the surgery. There was a lot of walking, and I barely made it through the trip, he says. My hip was basically bone rubbing on bone. In talking with his Kaiser-Permanente physician, Murali Balakrishnan, MD, orthopedic surgeon, John learned his surgery would be much different than his sister-in-law s. Because of advanced surgical technology, his surgery would be less invasive meaning a smaller incision with less blood loss and a faster recovery. In May 2008, John had a total right hip replacement. He was discharged after only three days and proudly reports, By mid-june, I was on my own. John s first hip replacement went so well that when his left hip started giving him problems a few months later, he didn t hesitate to have it replaced too. John had two surgeries in 10 months and is going about his business like nothing ever happened. Awilda euill, John euill s wife and recovery coach That surgery was in January 2009, and I ve had no problems since then, he says. If I had known hip replacement surgery was going to be this easy, I would have done it sooner. EXPEriEnCE CountS The Joint Center at Holy Cross Hospital features a specially trained, multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and therapists. Physicians at Holy Cross Hospital perform thousands of orthopedic procedures each year, including hundreds of joint replacement surgeries, says Antoni B. Goral, MD, medical director, Joint Center. The center s specialized program offers a continuum of care and support throughout the joint replacement process. Everything I needed was right there and set up just the way you d want it, John says. The physicians, nurses and physical therapists were very professional in their work and very accommodating. A CoACh S EnCourAGEMEnt Patients at the Joint Center are part of an intensive program built upon a series of milestones and achievement dates Preparing for joint replacement specific to each patient. From day one, patients are encouraged to facilitate their own healing by walking and moving about. In fact, patients are required to select a family member or friend who will act as a personal coach. The coaching system helps to ensure that patients are doing their exercises regularly, both in the hospital and at home. John s coach was his wife of 23 years, Awilda. I made sure he did all the exercises he was supposed to do and sometimes more, Awilda says. But I also made sure he didn t overdo it. After each surgery, a physical therapist from Holy Cross Home Care visited John twice a week for four weeks at his home. Awilda is thrilled with John s progress but also a little perplexed. I m still scratching my head, she says. John had two surgeries in 10 months and is going about his business like nothing ever happened. to find a holy Cross hospital physician specializing in orthopedics, call or visit To help patients know what to expect before, during and after surgery, Holy Cross Hospital offers a special two-hour educational session every other week. in addition to receiving practical information, patients tour the facility and meet some of the staff members who may be involved in their post-surgical care. Patients are encouraged to bring a family member, friend or other designated recovery coach to the session. 6 Seniors Ambulatory Surgery Center Taking surgical care to a new level Holy Cross Hospital has opened our unique and innovative Seniors Ambulatory Surgery Center for patients 65 and older who are having outpatient procedures or surgeries. Similar to our Seniors Emergency Center which opened in fall 2008 as the first of its kind in the nation our new Seniors Ambulatory Surgery Center provides care tailored to the specific needs of seniors. Our goal is to provide expert care while reducing anxiety and confusion in our patients. We achieve this by the attentive way our staff talks and listens; with the quiet, private atmosphere we provide; and by how closely we involve family and caregivers. We will continue to be a leader in caring for older adults, especially as more surgeries become outpatient procedures due to technological advances, says Judith Rogers, PhD, MSN, RN, chief nurse executive and vice president of Patient Care Services. Before, during and after surgery, We take time to talk to and listen to our patients, we offer them a quiet private atmosphere, and we welcome involvement from family and caregivers in the treatment process. Katharin Allard, RN, BSN, MSN, CNOR, perioperative clinical educator, Surgical Services we do things differently at Holy Cross Hospital. Read on to learn what puts our ambulatory surgery program above the rest. Before Surgery: Personal Attention to Get You Ready Our entire presurgical process for ambulatory surgery patients is now faster, easier and less confusing. Our new registration method gathers important information about patients and their upcoming procedures. To simplify the process further, patients or one of their loved ones can even register online. A few days before surgery, a phone call from a Holy Cross Hospital nurse will cover the details surrounding a patient s ambulatory surgery hospital visit, including the patient s existing 6 Holy Cross Health Today

7 health conditions, medications, spiritual needs, and how he or she will return home. The nurse also will use this time to determine the patient s awareness level and ability to care for him or herself upon leaving the hospital. If necessary, the nurse will review various follow-up services available at home or in the community through Holy Cross Hospital. during SurGEry: CArE that GivES you PEACE of Mind Operating room nurses at Holy Cross Hospital are trained to be advocates for senior patients. Nurses watch for correct positioning of the patient s body to protect fragile joints and bones, take special precautions to safeguard delicate skin, and use gel pads to properly protect and align the patient s body during the surgery. As we age we may experience a slower metabolism, become more sensitive to drug dosing, have multiple health issues and take a greater number of medications, says Welby Wu, MD, chair, Anesthesiology. All of these factors are accounted for during surgery. As changes occur in a patient s reaction to anesthesia, we respond with modifications of the anesthetic to ensure safety and comfort. We heard older patients say they felt rushed after surgery. We listened. And, as a result, we created the Seniors Ambulatory Surgery Center, where patients 65 and above are given extra time to more fully recover from surgery. Bonnie Mahon, RN, BSN, MSM, senior director, Office of Seniors and Medical/Surgical Services If the unexpected happens, our experienced team members are equipped with all of the amenities of a full-service hospital. With state-of-the-art equipment and experienced clinicians, Holy Cross Hospital offers peace of mind to our patients. AftEr SurGEry: EXtrA time to recover Patients 65 and older tend to recover more slowly, so we give them extra time to recuperate in a peaceful environment. Here they can regain their strength and confidence and make a seamless return to their home or other care setting. We heard older patients say they felt rushed after surgery, says Bonnie Mahon, RN, BSN, MSM, senior director, Office of Seniors and Medical/Surgical Services. We listened. And, as a result, we created the Seniors Ambulatory Surgery Center, where patients 65 and above are given extra time to more fully recover from surgery. The center features six bays containing recliners and stretchers with upgraded mattresses; soft lighting; noiseabsorbing materials; an inviting color scheme; nonglare, slip-proof floors; and convenient grab bars to prevent falls. Once patients leave the center, the personal attention doesn t end. As part of a continuum of care, all patients receive a follow-up phone call from a nurse to make sure each patient s needs are being met. 8 transforming robots are revolutionizing surgical technique and speeding livespatient recovery PAin-frEE: for several years i experienced severe lower back pain that would come and go, says Adonye Chamberlain, of Silver Spring. Eddie E. Michli, Md, found a ureteropelvic junction obstruction and used robotic surgery to remove the kidney impediment. Adonye is now pain-free and enjoys spending time with 3-year-old ibi. 8 Holy Cross Health Today

9 The robotic surgery team at Holy Cross Hospital is using the state-of-the-art da Vinci Surgical System to perform minimally invasive procedures to treat gynecologic, gynecologic oncology and urologic conditions. Robotic surgery uses small instruments and a camera in much the same way as traditional minimally invasive surgery except that instead of the surgeon holding the instruments, a robot does. The robot uses the instruments to cut and sew just as a human surgeon would but with greater precision. This incredible treatment option is available to more patients than ever before and demonstrates Holy Cross Hospital s commitment to excellence and high-quality health care, says Blair Eig, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer, Medical Affairs. Using the da Vinci system, the surgeon remains in complete control of the procedure without ever touching the patient s body. The robot seamlessly translates the surgeon s hand, wrist and finger movements into precise real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient. Robotic surgeons at Holy Cross Hospital use the da Vinci system to perform a wide variety of gynecologic procedures, such as hysterectomy and fibroid and ovarian cyst removal, and to treat urologic conditions of the prostate gland and kidneys. Here s a look at what our advanced surgical team has to say about the benefits of robotic surgery. Q: Why is it BEttEr? A: The precision, dexterity and 3-D image with magnification is what makes robotic surgery better than traditional minimally invasive surgery, says Randolph D. Lizardo, MD, OB/GYN. Q: is recovery faster? A: Research shows robotic surgery reduces pain and trauma to the body, allowing people to recover more quickly and return to their normal activities faster than with traditional surgery, says Eric M. Ashkin, MD, OB/GYN. Patients can often be out of the hospital the very same day. Q: ArE the results BEttEr? A: The robot s ability to filter out routine hand tremors and scale down movements when tinier cuts are needed means more precision and optimal results, says James F. Barter, MD, medical coordinator, Gynecologic Oncology Research. Q: WhErE ArE SurGEonS trained? A: The GATE Institute at Holy Cross Hospital is a teaching center for minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, says Albert J. Steren, MD, medical director, Gynecologic Oncology, and director of the GATE Institute.
