1 Chief Medical Physicist (Job Number: 01DDX) Job Title: Chief Medical Physicist Medical Physics and Radiation Engineering Classification: Chief Medical Physicist Position Number: Annual Salary: $200,648 - $207,754 plus Higher Qualification Allowance (if eligible) Branch: Clinical Support Services Section: Medical Physics and Radiation Engineering Vacancy Type: Permanent Closing Date: 28 June 2018 Contact Officer: Lisa Gilmore (02) lisa.gilmore@act.gov.au Position We are seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Medical Physics Specialist for appointment to the Chief Medical Physicist position to lead the Medical Physics and Radiation Engineering service for public health in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The ACT is a stand-alone Australian jurisdiction which is home to Australia s capital city, Canberra. Applications from medical physicists holding qualification in any medical physics specialty are encouraged. These specialties include, but are not limited to, radiology physics, nuclear medicine physics and radiation oncology medical physics. The successful applicant will work in a complex environment and will be responsible for influencing and developing strategy, policies, priorities and operational and strategic practices that support ACT Health objectives. We expect the applicant to have extensive managerial experience as well as demonstrated excellent communication and leadership skills. The successful applicant will lead the Medical Physics and Radiation Engineering branch based at Canberra Hospital, including managing the budget and having appropriate financial and human resource delegations. The branch currently consists of twenty staff and is integral in providing clinical, scientific and specialist support services to the Health Directorate including to Medical Imaging and the Canberra Region Cancer Centre (CRCC). The Chief Medical Physicist will work with senior health executives to help promote, maintain and grow a strong safety and quality culture within ACT Health covering ionising and non-ionising radiation use in a healthcare setting. The work includes supporting clinical physics activities across all specialities of medical physics, and leading and supporting the teaching and training of medical physics trainees and other health professionals. The ACT is a high growth region and the branch has doubled in size over the last 10 years. The Chief Medical Physicist is expected to provide the strategic planning and scientific expertise required to support the continuing growth of the branch in order to meet future service and technical demands. Furthermore, it is a high priority to develop and promote the output of the branch s research and development in collaboration with other clinical branches. Medical Imaging at Canberra Hospital provides comprehensive medical imaging services including three Siemens MRI (one neurosurgical), Philips PET/CT, two angiography suites, SPECT/CT, three gamma cameras (one of which is to be replaced with a second SPECT/CT), two CTs, general x-ray, sonography, two cardiac catheter laboratories and two therapy iodine rooms. The Radiation Oncology department has four Varian linear accelerators (one with Brainlab Stereotactic capabilities), two large bore CT simulators, SXRT and HDR brachytherapy. The treatment planning systems are Pinnacle, Oncentra and iplan providing IMRT/VMAT, SRS, and SBRT capabilities. The Radiation Oncology department participates in multiple clinical trials, and there are research laboratories on campus. The Medical Physics and Radiation Engineering branch also has strong links with the ANU, the University of Sydney, Wollongong University and the University of NSW. Medical Physics and Radiation Engineering is an accredited clinical site for Medical Physics Registrar training in Radiation Oncology and Diagnostic Imaging. The hospital delivers a full range of medical, surgical and obstetric services, including complex procedures in areas such as cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and neonatal intensive care. Strong links exist between hospital and community-based services, as many of the operational divisions deliver services across the continuum of care to ensure continuity of care for patients. The community based services of ACT Health include Early Childhood, Youth and Women s Health; Dental Services, Rehabilitation and Community Care; Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Services. In addition, Justice Health Services are provided within the Territory s detention facilities. ACT Health is a partner in teaching with the Australian National University, the University of Canberra and the Australian Catholic University. The Clinical Support Services (CSS) division provides support services across the clinical divisions within Canberra Hospital and Healthcare Services. CSS encompasses a mix of disciplines, including: Biomedical Engineering Clinical Records Service Medical Physics and Radiation Engineering Nursing Clinical Support (including Wardspersons, Hospital Assistants, Ward Clerks, e-rostering, Nursing and Midwifery Resource Office, After Hours Hospital Management Team, Central Equipment and Courier Service, Tissue Viability Unit, Infection Prevention and Control, and Spiritual Support Services) Pharmacy Overview of the work area and position The Medical Physics and Radiation Engineering (MPRE) team is responsible for the safety and quality (accuracy and precision) of clinical / non-clinical radiological and nuclear equipment, facilities and procedures. MPRE contributes technical and scientific support to clinical and research staff enabling efficient use of resources for the diagnosis, treatment and research of disease using medical radiation. MPRE provides a small number of direct healthcare consumer services. The broad areas of MPRE services are: Radiation safety, teaching and research; Brachytherapy physics; Teletherapy physics; Molecular and nuclear medicine physics; Radiology physics; Radiation engineering; and Mould room manufacturing. Medical radiation equipment and facilities need to be managed by ACT Health so that it meets its legislative and standard of care requirements. Access to medical physicists and radiation engineers is essential for standards to be met and for ACT Health to maintain eligibility for Medicare reimbursement of medical radiation procedures. With a significant degree of autonomy you will perform an important leadership role in ACT Health by leading the MPRE team in providing day to day medical physics and radiation engineering support services to users of medical radiation and related systems across ACT Health. The services provided by MPRE include those to, but not limited to, Radiation Oncology and Medical Imaging. You will work in an extremely complex environment and will be responsible for influencing and developing strategy, policies, priorities and operational and strategic practices that support ACT Health objectives. You will have an extremely high level of management responsibility.

3 Eligibility/Other Requirements Mandatory: Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australasian College of Medical Physicists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM) on the ACPSEM Register of Qualified Medical Physics Specialists. Postgraduate qualifications or equivalent in medical physics, tertiary qualifications or equivalent in physics, eligibility for membership of the ACPSEM, and must hold or be eligible for a current ACT driver s licence. Desirable: Hold certification from the ACPSEM, or equivalent, in one or more specialties of medical physics, preferably Radiology Medical Physics. Hold a qualification or certification relevant to radiation safety, preferably in a hospital environment. Hold a qualification or certification relevant to laser safety, preferably for medical lasers. Have experience working on jurisdictional advisory bodies, committees or working groups. Prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to: Duties Undergo a pre-employment Police check. Be registered under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act Comply with ACT Health Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy. 1. Manage Medical Physics and Radiation Engineering including managing staff, professional development and resources in Medical Physics and Radiation Engineering within an allocated budget. 2. Deliver all matters related to medical physics and radiation engineering within ACT Health in an effective and professional way; in particular, ensure that patient imaging and treatment are carried out in a safe and efficient manner with the appropriate quality. 3. Manage projects, delegate tasks and deliver projects on time and within budget including, as required, managing procurement processes of large medical imaging or radiation oncology equipment in accordance with legislation and policy. 4. Lead teaching and research initiatives for various aspects of medical physics and radiation engineering or other clinical areas of ACT Health. 5. Act as the ACT Health Radiation Safety Officer, the ACT Health Laser Safety Officer and provide expert advice on radiation safety for the various areas within ACT Health which utilise or are exposed to ionising radiation from artificial or natural sources, or non-ionising radiation from artificial sources. 6. Chair the ACT Health Radiation Safety Management Committee and report to the ACT Health executive on radiation safety matters. 7. Undertaking other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the section. Proven experience in radiation safety, laser safety and medical physics applications in all medical physics specialties including experience in the teaching and training of junior medical physics, allied health, nursing and/or medical staff. 2. Demonstrated management experience with the ability to manage staff and resources within budget including excellent written and verbal communication skills.

4 3. Demonstrated understanding and application of quality assurance to equipment and a history of experience with safety for patients receiving services within healthcare settings. 4. Demonstrated project management and task assignment experience in ensuring projects related to medical physics equipment are completed in a timely manner and within budget as well as the ability to initiate and oversee research and development projects. 5.
