1 Macquarie University - Program Admission, Program and Inherent Requirements Overall Definition Inherent requirements are the essential activities, capacities and academic requirements that are necessary for a student to successfully achieve the core learning outcomes of a Macquarie University degree or program or unit. Students must meet the inherent requirements in order to complete their degree, program or unit and graduate. Clearly defined inherent requirements provide students with a greater understanding of what essential activities, capacities and academic requirements are required to successfully complete their degree, program or unit. They also provide students with an opportunity to make informed decisions as to whether the degree, program or unit is suitable. Macquarie University Discipline of Physiotherapy is committed to principles of equity and social inclusion in the provision of admission to students. Students who do not meet the inherent requirement may be able to have reasonable adjustments made to enable them to meet these inherent requirements. In assessing whether an adjustment is reasonable, the University is entitled to maintain the academic requirements and other requirements or components that are inherent in or essential to the degree, program or unit. Reasonable adjustments must not fundamentally change the inherent requirement. Inherent requirements are different from any legislative or professional requirements that might apply to a course of study. Inherent requirements are part of a suite of course requirements. Minimum admission requirements include: Admission requirements Australian level 7 bachelor s qualification or recognised equivalent GPA of 4.5 (out of 7.00) Recent successful completion of at least one tertiary unit in each of the following areas: Human Anatomy (musculoskeletal and system), Human Physiology (cell and system), Psychology, Research methods. English language requirement: IELTS of 7.0 overall with minimum 7.0 in each band Applicants who are currently or have previously been enrolled in an Australian post-graduate physiotherapy program will not be considered for admission to the unless there are extenuating circumstances. Applicants with extenuating circumstances will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and will only be considered for entry if they: 1. Meet all other entry criteria (as above) 2. Have demonstrated satisfactory progress through their prior physiotherapy program 1 P age

Submit a special request or re-application for entry to the Macquarie University DPT which includes an official copy of their transcript from their physiotherapy program and a brief description of their reasons for applying or re-applying to the Macquarie University DPT. 4. Are deemed a suitable candidate by the Executive Dean (FMHS, Macquarie University) after consideration of their circumstances underpinning their request for entry to the Macquarie University DPT. Admission is competitive. Meeting the minimum requirements will not guarantee an offer of enrolment. Additional admission information can be viewed at: Supplementary Form In addition to the admission requirements listed above, applicants must also submit the compulsory Supplementary form as part of their application process through Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). The applicant must acknowledge that they have read, understood and agree to comply with ALL policies and requirements outlined in the document. These include: Compulsory program requirements and information Practical Class Participation o Full participation in practical classes which involve observation, manual handling, examination and therapy techniques. Students will be expected to practice on each other, and be practiced on by other students and teaching staff. o Compliance to disrobe to shorts and singlet or swim-suit equivalent in order to participate in classroom teaching of physiotherapy practice and techniques. Clinical Placement Requirements o Compliance with the requirements of the NSW Ministry of Health Policy o Obtain all necessary and ongoing clearances (criminal record, working with children) and vaccinations o Hold a current CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) certificate o Hold a current First Aid certificate Course Requirements Specific requirement for the course and each subject can be viewed at: * Program requirements may be compulsory but may also be waived without undermining the academic integrity of the program (e.g. attendance at some learning activities). 2 P age

3 Registration Standards This program has been accredited by the Australian Physiotherapy Council and approved by the Physiotherapy Board of Australia. Graduates will be eligible to apply to register and practice as a physiotherapist. In order to register upon completion, graduates must also meet the Physiotherapy Board of Australia s registration standards including those for English language skills and criminal history. 4 Inherent Requirements for the Macquarie University Program Category 1: Physical The physical inherent requirement is to have the physical capacities to safely and effectively perform the activities necessary to undertake the learning activities and achieve the learning outcomes of a degree. Work Health and Safety legislation requires that students do not place themselves or others at risk Students may need to complete specific tasks in a timely manner and sustain performance over time. Some programs include physical activities that require use of specific faculties, motor skills and capacities Assess and observe patient appearance, behaviour, posture, movement and speech. E.g. perform a physical examination of a newly referred patient with an acute stroke. Monitor the broader practice environment (including observing multiple patients and events simultaneously). E.g. safely conduct an exercise class for patients with low back pain. Gather and interpret information through touch. E.g. manipulate the joints of the cervical spine in a patient with neck stiffness. Physically examine people of any gender or age. E.g. physiotherapy students treat both male and female patients across the lifespan. Assist with client or patient transfers and provide physical assistance to patients of both genders. E.g. following hip replacement physiotherapy student assists patients to get in and out of a chair safely. Acquire and hold a Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate from a registered training organisation. Cleanse hands and forearms using disinfecting products. E.g. in every clinical environment and in the classroom students are required to wash their hands between patient /student contact. 4 P age

5 Wear personal protective clothing and equipment. E.g. students will be required to wear protective gowns and masks when treating patients with infectious diseases or low immunity. Independently carry and manipulate instruments, materials and equipment necessary for clinical care. E.g. physiotherapy students are required to collect and fit walking aids for patients with orthopaedic problems, for example walking frames and crutches. Effectively manipulate small objects. E.g. physiotherapy students use small measurement tools to measure joint range of students and patients. Maintain a standing position while using both upper limbs to perform a task. E.g. perform chest percussion on a patient or student who is lying on a plinth. Attend placements in a range of clinical settings and locations for the required number of hours, within a reasonable period as determined by the University. Category 2: Cognition The inherent requirement for cognition is possessing the intellectual, conceptual, integrative and quantitative capabilities to undertake the learning Students need the capacity to read, comprehend, analyse and integrate complex written materials Integrate theory and knowledge from various sources. E.g. Formulate a provisional diagnosis and a treatment plan based on a history and physical examination. 5 P age

6 activities and achieve the learning outcomes of a degree. Students need the capacity to reason and to synthesize knowledge in order to solve problems Students need the capacity to identify and apply important information to relevant situations Students need the capacity to prioritize and to complete tasks within the required timeframe Students need the capacity to use basic quantitative and other research skills to gather, interpret and evaluate data as relevant for the program of study Develop options and assess and compare their respective merits. E.g. use evidence-based practice knowledge to prioritise treatment options for a patient with cystic fibrosis. Accurately recall information in a timely manner E.g. perform a patient handover to a senior colleague. Accurately undertake arithmetic calculations. E.g. calculate the intensity required for exercise training adaptation based on the findings of a six-minute walk test. Engage in rational and ethical reasoning. E.g. give consideration to patient autonomy and preferences in palliative care treatment. Understand another person s perspective. E.g. negotiate return to sport plan for an injured athlete with team coach or trainer. Complete clinical tasks in a safe and reasonable time frame. E.g. plan the management of a weekend ward list to ensure that each patient receives adequate care. Maintain a sufficient level of concentration to focus on an activity to completion. E.g. plan and implement long term goals and treatment for a patient with an acquired brain injury over the course of 3 months. Category 3: Communication The inherent requirement for communication is the capacity to communicate information, Students need to be able to understand, leadand participate in verbal and non-verbal Comprehend spoken English delivered at conversational speed E.g. in noisy 6 P age

MQ is an Englishspeaking university although students may be required to communicate in other languages in accordance with their program of study. exchanges in informal, formal and professional contexts. Students need to be able to clearly understand and follow instructions and/or tasks. To demonstrate their learning, students need to convey their own thoughts and understanding using various communication mediums such as writing, presentations, tutorials etc. environments, such as hospital wards, gyms and classrooms. Understand and respond to verbal communications accurately, appropriately and in a timely manner. E.g. respond appropriately to a patient s question while walking them along a noisy hospital corridor. Communicate clearly, audibly and intelligibly in English. Actively lead and participate in group discussions. E.g. participate in patient based group discussion in class and clinic. Read and comprehend information presented in a variety of standard formats in a reasonable time frame in the context of clinical consultations. E.g. hand written and electronic medical records, scientific articles, pathology reports. Record information accurately and make coherent notes. E.g. record results of a physiotherapy tests and write a referral letter or report. Perceive non-verbal communication from others and respond appropriately (in context). E.g. recognising and responding to patient facial expressions and emotional states when experiencing pain or distress. Communicate respectfully with people of different gender, sexuality and age, and from diverse cultural, religious, socio-economic and educational backgrounds. E.g. physiotherapy 7 P age

8 students treat and interact with patients across the lifespan and from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds Category 4: Behavioural The behaviour inherent requirement is the capacity to sustain appropriate behaviour over the duration of units of study to engage in activities necessary to undertake the learning activities and achieve the learning outcomes of a degree. Some programs require students to interact with fellow students, university staff, or external parties (e.g. organisational representatives, hospital patients, primary and high school students) in order to achieve learning outcomes in environments that may be sensitive, demanding or dynamic Students need to function and adapt effectively and sensitively and manage their own emotions in an academic, clinical or placement environment Students need to be open and responsive to constructive feedback Control the expression of your own emotions. E.g. maintain a professional empathy and objectivity in the context of a death of an infant or child or a dying patient. Be able to work effectively in the face of uncertainty and adapt to changing environments. E.g. demonstrate resilience and competence when randomly allocated a patient case during a viva examination. Accept and fulfill responsibilities you are given for patient/client care.e.g. assess a new patient and report findings to the clinical supervisor prior to commencing treatment. Manage your own physical and mental health effectively. E.g. seek professional help as required Respect and adhere to personal and professional boundaries. Dress appropriately and safely for the clinical workplace. E.g. students are required to wear a clinical uniform and closed-in shoes in the clinic and for practical examinations. 8 P age
