5 District 20Y2 Camp Abilities Saratoga by Lion John MacDonald August in Saratoga has always centered on the fun filled excitement of the races at the track. The track shared the limelight of the first week of August this year with something new and in its own way equally exciting. After two plus years of hard work, the efforts of the Saratoga Springs Lions club paid off in a way that would make even the most successful wager jealous! The Saratoga Spring Lions held their inaugural Camp Abilities Saratoga sports camp for blind, visually impaired and deaf blind children and teens on the Skidmore campus and at venues around town during the first week of August. The counselors and support staff were welcomed to town on Saturday with a welcoming dinner at Lillian s Restaurant and on Sunday the campers arrived! The official Opening ceremonies and the welcoming of our 18 campers took place on Sunday afternoon. Over the course of the next week the camp was filled with camaraderie, skills development, confidence building and many firsts for our campers. But what was really special were all the smiles and I did it! indicating that A Loss of Sight.Never a Loss of Vision rang true. From beep baseball to goal ball, tandem biking to track & field, swimming to judo, the camper s week was filled with NSEE Camp on page 6

6 NFrom Camp on page 5 activity. Things didn t let up in the evenings either, with a Please welcoming dance on Sunday night, paddle boarding and equestrian activities on Monday and Tuesday, bowling on Wednesday, a picnic in the Spa Park on Thursday and a talent show and more dancing on Friday. By the time of our closing ceremonies on Saturday afternoon, the common refrain amongst our campers and counselors alike was I can t wait to come back next year! The Saratoga Springs Lions wish to thank everyone involved who assisted in the tremendous success of Camp Abilities Saratoga. The generous support of time, dollars, equipment, materials and supplies, programs and food, provided the campers with a chance to enter the sighted world of sports and come away feeling more confident that they can participate in future school, family and community sports activities. These young athletes had the opportunity to experience the same thrills of a summer camp as those of their sighted peers! The Saratoga Springs Lions Club especially wishes to thank all of our neighboring Lions Clubs that helped out through their financial contributions and generous donation of time and in-kind services. The clubs and members of Albany- Troy, Ballston Spa, Bethlehem, Cambridge, Galway, Glens Falls, Greenwich, Greenfield, Hoosick, Scotia Glenville, Schuylerville, Mechanicville Stillwater, and Hadley Luzerne Lioness have demonstrated that they care deeply about supporting blind and visually impaired children through a sports camp and have chosen to make a significant difference in the success of Camp Abilities Saratoga! We look forward to our future August camps together and sharing many more firsts for the campers at Camp Abilities Saratoga. check out our website for more details on the success of our first camp: A Loss of Sight.Never a Loss of Vision Glens Falls Lions Club By Lion Sandra Clark The Glens Falls Lions Hearing Committee recently held its second successful Community meeting. Dr. Susan Boggia, audiologist and member of the Club, gave a presentation on Tinnitus, commonly known as ringing in the ears. Over 35 people from the community attended this informative meeting. Glens Falls Lions Club King Lion Kassey Granger P.O. Box 528, Glens Falls, NY Like our Facebook page: Glens Falls Lions Club A First Hand Look at Camp Abilities By Lion Karen Rager Earlier in August, Jenn Howse inquired about receiving information on Lions and how to become one on the Glens Falls Lions Club Facebook page. She said that her son, Alex Sorensen, had just attended Camp Abilities, and had such a great time! It was there they had learned about Lions. I immediately responded and invited her and her fiance John to attend our next dinner meeting as our guest. At our dinner meeting I was able learn more of Alex s story from his Mom. Alex lost his vision suddenly in December 2013 and is the only child in his school who is legally blind, Camp Abilities gave him a chance to be around kids like him which showed him that despite his vision loss, he can still do anything. I asked Alex a few questions through his mom. Here are his responses. Lion Karen: What events did you participate in? NSEE Alex on page 7

7 NFrom Alex on page 6 Alex Sorenson (left) and his roomate and friend Chris Baker (right) at Opening Ceremonies. Lion Karen: Did you make lots of friends and will you keep in touch with them? Alex: Yes and I will get to see a lot of them at NABA gatherings through out the year. Alex: Camp dance party, horse back riding, standup paddle boarding, track and field, judo, beep ball, goal ball, duathalon, bowling, tandem biking, a water gun fight at the park and the talent show where Alex got to show off some of his Goshen- Ryu karate katas. Lion Karen: What was your favorite event at Camp Abilities? Alex: My favorite was track and field because I got to run and I like running. His mother relayed, Chris Baker, who Alex met at NABA (a day camp) camp earlier in the summer was at Camp Abilities and wound up being Alex s room mate so Alex was excited to know somebody there...especially his room mate. positive and uplifting. Lion Karen: Anything you would like to tell the Lions? Alex: Camp was AWESOME! Jenn said, This was Alex s first time away at over night camp. He loved the idea of being in a college dorm, it was like having my own apartment. Camp Abilities gave him back his confidence. We are so very thankful for the opportunity that the Lions made possible. All of the coaches at camp were Jenn shared this about Alex, In mid 2012, Alex was misdiagnosed with amblyopia. While the glasses he was given seemed to help a bit, he was still struggling. After a few doctors visits and confirmations of 20/50 vision and amblyopia we finally went to his pediatrician to find out what else we could do. Alex s reading had become more labored and his beautiful penmanship (yes, even in 2nd grade he had beautiful penmanship), was now just letters all over a page. His pediatrician had recommended that we go to see Dr Hite who ran a few tests and decided Alex should go to see Dr Zobel-Ratner. In between visits, Alex s vision got worse and in December 2013 he was at 20/200. Dr Zobel-Ratner ran pretty extensive tests and let us know that Alex had rod and cone dystrophy but could not give us a cause of it. She sent us out to Boston Children s hospital in March 2013 where more tests were run and again in July. At this time, we are waiting on genetic test results to be returned to see if a cause can be found. Alex was adopted from Guatemala as an infant and from what we understand, both of his biological parents have vision problems. We have contacted them to see if they would be willing to do the blood work for genetic testing if necessary and they have both agreed. Both Jenn and John s applications for membership have been submitted! We are so happy to have this family join our club! Albany & Troy Lions Club By Lion Jerry Gordon In an , PDG Dave told us that Lion Phil spent some time in Samaritan Hospital for treatment of kidney stones, pneumonia and several other problems. He is now at Eddy Heritage House Nursing & Rehab Center. At the International Convention, Lion Jerry visited The Dictionary Project s booth, and just this afternoon received a box of 7 different dictionaries. Their goal is to have organizations such as ours donate free dictionaries to 3rd-graders. Of course, we would buy them from them for about $ each. This project would tie in well with both the work-with-youth and improve-literacy Lions objectives. This will require more discussion about both implementation and funding issues. See dictionaryproject. org. We voted to donate $100 to the Sight Society to help defray the expenses of their annual Donor Family NSEE Albany on page 8

8 NFrom Albany on page 7 Memorial Service on October 5. KL Carol has processed 3 hearing-aid applications. Because of the assets that one gentleman has, she s recommending that we pay $140, or half the expense. For the other two, she recommends that we pay $280 each. All three are going through Madison Hearing. We voted to approve all three of her recommendations. Our first general meeting of LY14-15 is on September 3 at the Red Front. Our speaker will be ophthalmologist Dr. Mabel Cheng; I m sure she ll give an eye-opening presentation. Our next BLOOD DRIVE will be Monday, September 29, from 1-6 PM at the East Greenbush Community Library. We need volunteers to work at the registration desk and the canteen at the drive and to donate blood. If you can do either or both of these, please sign up with KL Carol at cquantoc@nycap.rr.com or ALBANY & TROY Lions Club King Lion Carol Quantock P.O. 12 SIGHT SOCIETY OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK, INC. LIONS EYE BANK AT ALBANY 6 Executive Park Drive Albany, NY Tel. (518) Fax: (518) LIONS CLUB MATCHING GRANT APPLICATION At its inception and throughout its early history, the existence and initial success of our Sight Society of NENY at Albany, Inc., very much depended upon the financial and active support of Lions clubs in the service area of Districts O, Y2 and W. Although our basic mission, with the continued support of our clubs, remains the same, the services of our Lions Eye Bank have expanded to include our present state-of-the-art facility and programs maintained by an Executive Director and staff of nine. Today, our not-for-profit organization finds itself in a position with the financial resources to help clubs promote our joint mission of sight conservation by providing matching funds to implement specific projects with that object in mind. The kinds of projects or programs we wish to help support should not duplicate those already available from other sources. Programs that encompass broader, sustainable activities are most desirable; areas like Diabetes and Sight, Senior Sight Conservation, Sight Conservation Education in Schools, Nurse-Teacher Informational Programs, Health Fairs with Sight Conservation Components among others which come immediately to mind. Projects not eligible for consideration include services available through traditional Lions programs for individuals like (a). club programs which provide eye exams and eyeglasses through arrangements made with optometrists and/or optical companies (LensCrafters etc.)., (b). medical treatments / surgery referable for assistance from a Lions Eye Institute / Lions Foundation at Albany, NY. Our matching grant program for each year will focus on a particular theme or area. For our first year in 2013, we are looking to support club projects with an emphasis on Senior Sight Conservation. 1. Who is eligible to apply? Lions clubs, Lioness clubs, and Leo clubs in Districts W, Y2 and O. 2. Amount of Grant Variable grant requests for any amount up to $500 will be considered. 3. Recipient clubs must agree to match, from other financial resources, the full amount of the grant as approved by the Grant Committee. Note that value of club members donated time does not qualify as matching resources. 4. Grant applications may be submitted at any time and shall consist of a clear statement of the nature and purpose of the project along with any other details deemed appropriate by the applicant. A proposed budget of how grant monies will be spent consistent with our Lions Code of Ethics must also be provided as part of the application process. 5. It is expected that clubs will complete approved projects within one year of receiving the grant. Upon completion, submission of a comprehensive written report reviewing the outcome of the project is required from successful grant applicants. This will include a financial statement citing expenditures, payments to venders etc. incurred during the program. Arrangements to return to the Society, any unspent funds should be made by the club. 6. Clubs receiving awards through the grant program are urged to publicize their projects through club, district, state and international media. -Page 1-
