Our vision is that every person with Type 1 Diabetes is empowered to live life to their fullest potential. Camp Leo Mission Before camp my daughter was timid and seemed to forget that she is still a kid and can do kid stuff. She didn t want to play and seemed to be fearful of her diagnosis. 5 Summer 2016 The Lion s Roar 5 Lions Dedicate Sierra Park Path for the Blind Flag and Plaque Story by Teresa Wipple, Editor, MyEdmondsNews Used with Permission Members of the Edmonds Lions Club gathered at Sierra Park Saturday morning to dedicate a new flagpole complete with solar-powered lighting and plaque honoring Lions Club International s services for those who are blind or visually impaired. The dedication marks the latest chapter in the Edmonds Lions Club s story regarding the park, which began 40 years ago when the Edmonds Lions created the Sierra Park Path for the Blind. Those with visual impairments can enjoy paved walking trails and braille signs along the trails identifying trees donated by the Lions Club. Volunteers from the club continue to maintain the trails. While Lions Clubs internationally focus on a variety of community service projects, they have included in their work sight programs aimed at preventable blindness ever since Helen Keller spoke to a Lions Club International Convention in In her speech, she challenged Lions to become knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness. Located at nd Ave. W. in Edmonds Seaview neighborhood, Sierra Park was designed by Bob Brown, a blind landscape architect, and built and funded by Edmonds Lions Club members. The park is owned by the City of Edmonds, and Edmonds Lions work in cooperation with the city to maintain the trails and signs, keeping it accessible for everyone. During Saturday s dedication ceremony, Club President Bobby Mills had many people to thank, including City of Edmonds Parks and Recreation Manager Rich Lindsay. He s been a big help to us over the years, Mills said.

6 Summer 2016 The Lion s Roar 6 Mills also thanked the park s neighbors, who often provide Lions volunteers with food and coffee during their work parties. After club Secretary Charles Brady raised the flag, assisted by Past President Ed Soper and Incoming President Brian Evans, those gathered heard from Edmonds Mayor Dave Earling, who was on hand for the dedication. The mayor thanked Lions Club members for their steadfastness in continuing to work on the Sierra Park project for the past 40 years. I just think it s fabulous, he said. The Sierra Park Path for the Blind was a 1976 State of Washington Bicentennial project for the Edmonds Lions Club in honor of the U.S. Bicentennial. In 1989, the Washington Trails Association selected the Sierra Park Path for the Blind as one of Washington s 25 Centennial Trails in celebration of 100 years of statehood. Lion s Roar editor s note: The Edmonds Lions 1976 project was carried out under the direction of Project Chairman Lion Phil Thorleifson.
