PLEASE READ Submission Specifications on PAGE 16 BEFORE SUBMITTING karen@deuxflutes.com Happy 2015 Lions, Lioness and Leos! We are halfway through our Lions year and I must commend the clubs in our District for their commitment to grow and serve their communities and beyond. We added 59 new Lions this year, however we dropped 63 Lions for various reasons. International President Joe Preston has challenged all Lions to Ask 1 person to join our organization. In this month s Lions Magazine however he admits that in hindsight, he wishes he had put more effort on retention. He states there is little use in recruiting new members if we let our existing members slip out the back door. Therefore, Lions International has launched a new campaign to Keep1. Please keep all club members, new and seasoned, actively involved with club functions and activities. January is Lions Worldwide Week of Service, an international event that hopes to bring Lions around the world together for a special week of celebration and service. Take this opportunity to strengthen your community with a service project, showcase your club and celebrate the birthday of our founder, Melvin Jones. Please remember to send your reservations for the 3rd Cabinet Meeting on January 24th to Lion Mary Claire. Yours in Lionism, DG Marianne District Governor Marianne Lynch

3 VCB by Lion Mike O Brien This is my report about happenings at Visions Center on Blindness to The District 20-Y2 Fall Cabinet Meeting, as of January 24th, Concerning Hurricane Sandi damage insurance coverage, Fema only provided approximately $10, in assistance. Remaining Sandi-related repairs were covered by private donations and insurance. All Sandi related damage was repaired. This includes repair of the dining hall floor, and damage to other buildings. A new, more resilient drainage system by the Hoffheimer cottage was installed, as was a new power pole, between the lake and storage barn. There were no sessions in November and December, and none will be held in January, due to a winter break, however, the center is available for rent during this period. Please contact VCB for particulars, if interested. The next session will be February 16th through 19th. It will be a pre-vocational skills training program for approximately 30 youth with vision impairments, between 14 and 21 years of age. All application questions for MD 20 project inclusion were answered, as completely as possible. Any additional ones should be answered by contacting VCB., prior to the MD 20 Council of Governors meeting in Syracuse, February 28th, during which a vote on sending the application to the general membership for a final vote at the annual MD 20 convention in April will be taken. VCB Chair Lion Mike O Brien m.obrien@samobile.net Hadley-Luzerne Lions Club By Lion Peter Watts For over 60 years the Hadley-Luzerne Lions have done Christmas food baskets for those in need in our area. 5 Albany & Troy Lions Club By Lion Jerry Gordon Our holiday party held on Wednesday, December 3, at Valente s. It would have been nice to have had a little bigger crowd, but those Lions and spouses that did show up, including Zone Chair Michele O Hare, had a very enjoyable evening. Our thanks go to Lion Kathy for arranging the event and providing the music, and to Lion Maryanne for the entertaining games that we all enjoyed. Valente s food is always good, and you can t beat their friendly and efficient service. From our board meetings held on Wednesday, December 17, at the Route 7 Diner, Lion Paul reported that our holiday greens sale generated a net profit of $936. Our thanks go to Lions Diane and Tom for continuing to chair this profitable program. On Dec. 7, we sold popcorn at the Victorian Stroll. I think we ve found a new home for our annual popcorn sales. It was nice being inside the Atrium, where the crowds were. Sales were brisk throughout the day. We went into the day with 400 cups left over from last year. Figuring on 8-10 cups per popcorn pack, I ordered 2 cases of 24 packs/case. Sure enough, at the end of the day, we averaged about 9 cups/pack. At around 3:30, we ran out of cups, and we had popped our last batch but still had some left. Michelle s son, Jaleel, came up with the bright idea of putting the popcorn into the plastic food service gloves we wear. We decided to give those away because they hold maybe half as much popcorn, but most people paid for them anyway. We ended up grossing $452. Several folks gave donations of keep the change ; one woman who works at Vanderheyden gave us $20. Our costs were $45 for popcorn + a $50 donation to the Stroll. The crowds starting thinning about the time we ran out of cups and popcorn. Next year, if we order 2 cases but start with 500 cups (a full carton), it should work out just right. We have delivered 430 Coats for Kids, with 3 of the cleaners reporting none. 172 went to Albany and 258 went to Troy. In addition, Lion Phoebe Larned, the soldier from Bowie, MD, who s stationed in Latham for a year, has been doing her own collecting. She ll be delivering three boxes of toys and two bags of coats and boots to CEO this weekend. We don t have an actual count on the number of toys we collected at the holiday party, but CEO was quite pleased with the several cartons that we gave them. Lion Jerry will be working with CEO on toy distribution next Tuesday afternoon. page 5 KL Carol says our next blood drive will be on Monday, March 2 at Troy s Hilton Garden Inn. KL Carol appointed Lions Jerry, Laura and Mike to arrange for our 90th anniversary celebration next year. There hasn t been any further word on establishing eyeglass processing for the district in Galway. Because Lion Tom does such an excellent job, this wouldn t be of any value to us; we would participate only to help out the district. The subject was tabled until we hear more. Lion Maryanne sent out two vouchers for twins who needed glasses, but LensCrafters was able to provide the glasses using their own funds, so they returned the vouchers for reuse. KL Carol is evaluating a new applicant for hearing aids. We voted not to sell chocolate Easter bunnies, but we will donate $50 to the Lions Eye Institute instead. If any of our members want any, we can order them from another club. The committee formed to evaluate our Klingaman Award program (Lions Paul, Tom Diane and Fran) will meet at 5:30 PM, just before our next meeting, on Jan 7. Lion Jerry reported that the seal campaign has brought in $975 so far. This is ahead of last year s total and donations are still coming in. Anyone who s planning on making a contribution should do it promptly if they want a 2014 tax deduction. Lion Joann reports: The ATLC Christmas presents for 4 young women (in their early twenties) have been bought, wrapped and delivered to Vanderheyden. All girls will receive pj s and slippers, assortment of bath gel and body lotion, and then each will receive a present from their wish list, such as: backpack, headphones, CD and Play Station game. I also got them a $50 gift card to Price Chopper. Our deepest thanks go to Lion Joann for the excellent job she has been doing with this program for the past several years. Dr Sai Gandham is with the Lions Eye Institute. We were approached by one of his MD students on behalf of his ophthalmology class at Albany Medical College. They will be holding a vision screening clinic at the Capital City Rescue Mission in Albany, and they would like us to provide eyeglasses for those in need possibly as many as 50 people. Because of the difficulty of getting these folks to LensCrafters, who usually provides our glasses, they decided that reading glasses would probably suffice, and they have found a relatively inex- NSee Albany - Troy on page 6

6 N Albany - Troy from page 5 pensive source. We voted to donate $244 to purchase 244 pairs of reading glasses in assorted strengths. Remaining glasses will be used at future clinics. A service coordinator from the Center for Disability Services asked whether we could help with the funding for a Braille PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) board for a blind and autistic student. We asked NABA whether such a device was available through them, and they have picked up the ball. One of their technology instructors is now working with CDS to establish just what would be the best equipment for this situation. Once they know what they need and the cost has ben determined, we may get involved again. ALBANY & TROY Lions Club King Lion Carol Quantock P.O. Lion Karen Rager inducted Amy Hoffer into the Glens Falls Lions Club with Lion Scott Rager as her sponsor. After the official business was completed, King Lion Kassey had activities planned that got the members into the Christmas spirit, which involved pantyhose, balloons, and a gift exchange! On a more serious note, the Club donated $500 to Wait House (for homeless youth in Warren and Washington counties). Individual Club Members also donated to this worthy cause, making it a joyous season for those living at Lions Jim Clark, Scott Rager, and Al model pantyhoseballoon-headgear. Stylish! Wait House. page 6 Sandie Clark, a member of the Club s Hearing Committee visited the seventh graders at Oliver Winch Middle School to talk about how Helen Keller s life would be different today because of technology, medical advances and services available to help her. She demonstrated several assistive devices and each student had an opportunity to see what it was like to be deaf and blind. As part of the English Language Arts program at the school, 204 students read four books about Helen Keller and the end highlight of the semester was to attend Ms. Clark s presentation. 9 Hearing Conservation Society Sound Byte! by Lion Sandie Clark The Lions Hearing Conservation Society frequently talks about the dangers of LOUD noises to your hearing. Well it is just in! One of the Saratoga Lions tested the decibel reading from his snow blower. Its readings were between decibel! Not wearing ear protection while snow blowing will DEFINITELY harm HIS hearing. 85 decibels is the maximum safe level. Get your ear protection out!!! The next Lions Hearing Conservation Society meeting is Monday, January 7:00 p.m. at the Resource Center for Independent Living Center, 347 W. Main Street, Amsterdam. 16 page 16 SIGHT SOCIETY OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK, INC. LIONS EYE BANK AT ALBANY 6 Executive Park Drive Albany, NY Tel. (518) Fax: (518) LIONS CLUB MATCHING GRANT APPLICATION At its inception and throughout its early history, the existence and initial success of our Sight Society of NENY at Albany, Inc., very much depended upon the financial and active support of Lions clubs in the service area of Districts O, Y2 and W. Although our basic mission, with the continued support of our clubs, remains the same, the services of our Lions Eye Bank have expanded to include our present state-of-the-art facility and programs maintained by an Executive Director and staff of nine. Today, our not-for-profit organization finds itself in a position with the financial resources to help clubs promote our joint mission of sight conservation by providing matching funds to implement specific projects with that object in mind. The kinds of projects or programs we wish to help support should not duplicate those already available from other sources. Programs that encompass broader, sustainable activities are most desirable; areas like Diabetes and Sight, Senior Sight Conservation, Sight Conservation Education in Schools, Nurse-Teacher Informational Programs, Health Fairs with Sight Conservation Components among others which come immediately to mind. Projects not eligible for consideration include services available through traditional Lions programs for individuals like (a). club programs which provide eye exams and eyeglasses through arrangements made with optometrists and/or optical companies (LensCrafters etc.)., (b). medical treatments / surgery referable for assistance from a Lions Eye Institute / Lions Foundation at Albany, NY. Our matching grant program for each year will focus on a particular theme or area. For our first year in 2013, we are looking to support club projects with an emphasis on Senior Sight Conservation. 1. Who is eligible to apply? Lions clubs, Lioness clubs, and Leo clubs in Districts W, Y2 and O. 2. Amount of Grant Variable grant requests for any amount up to $500 will be considered. 3. Recipient clubs must agree to match, from other financial resources, the full amount of the grant as approved by the Grant Committee. Note that value of club members donated time does not qualify as matching resources. 4. Grant applications may be submitted at any time and shall consist of a clear statement of the nature and purpose of the project along with any other details deemed appropriate by the applicant. A proposed budget of how grant monies will be spent consistent with our Lions Code of Ethics must also be provided as part of the application process. 5. It is expected that clubs will complete approved projects within one year of receiving the grant. Upon completion, submission of a comprehensive written report reviewing the outcome of the project is required from successful grant applicants. This will include a financial statement citing expenditures, payments to venders etc. incurred during the program. Arrangements to return to the Society, any unspent funds should be made by the club. 6. Clubs receiving awards through the grant program are urged to publicize their projects through club, district, state and international media. -Page 1-
