2 MRCK16: Asset-rich Lexington and Central Ky. a world class business climate By Robbie Clark Excerpt from The Lane Report Lexington and the surrounding Bluegrass region continue to reap national accolades regarding the area s business climate and quality of life. Site Selection magazine named Lexington No. 8 on its list of top U.S. cities with the best business climate and Fourth Economy, a national economic development consulting firm, ranked Lexington the No. 1 midsize community to attract modern investment and managed economic growth. Forbes put Lexington as No. 7 on its list of best mid-sized cities for jobs in Behind these rankings is an impressive list of projects bringing investments, new businesses and expansions to the region. According to Commerce Lexington Inc., the chamber of commerce for Lexington and surrounding communities, 2015 saw 26 locations and expansion announcements in the Bluegrass with total investment of over $130 million estimated to create over 900 jobs. Halfway through 2016, there were 12 project announcements with a total investment of over $90 million estimated to create nearly 450 jobs. When recruiting new businesses, Commerce Lexington, which takes a regionalism approach to economic development, has an arsenal of attractive incentives its representatives can showcase to promote the region s strategic advantages over other areas of the country: its educated workforce, great logistics location, streamlined process for development, state and local financial incentives, and what Commerce Lexington President Bob Quick calls the community s welcome sign for doing business. Full story available at 20Newsletter&utm_medium= &utm_campaign= 2017 Legends of the Industry Nomination Form I nominate the following individual(s) to the Kentucky Ready Mixed Concrete Association Legends of the Industry Name: Company: Name: Company: Remarks: Please briefly state your reasons for the nomination(s): (continued from page 1) at the ICF built Drury Inn East in Louisville Kentucky; which, by the way has a beautiful concrete parking lot. The Drury audience included representatives from U of L, Kentucky State Fairgrounds, Jefferson County and Oldham County public schools. "This was a great opportunity to take the message to the people and have time to interact, answer questions and build relationships within the concrete construction industry," Hansen said. There were good comments from the 50 plus that attended, including several contractors. Resonating in particular: Jon spoke of New Car Sales lots where tar and tack gets into the floorboards of new cars; but not with concrete. Laser screed speed of production was a big highlight in Louisville. The up to date specifying of macro synthetic fibers was a point of special interest to all three crowds NRMCA s Guide to Overlays of Asphalt parking lots were provided to attendees. Since the Hansen programs took place there have been follow up contacts on several promising parking lot projects Nominator Name: Nominator phone & Submit Nominations by Nov 4th, 2016 by 5pm to KRMCA 1 HMB Circle Frankfort, KY Phone: (502) Fax: (502) shagg@krmca.org The Legends of the Industry Award will be submitted for approval at the Fall Board Meeting and will be presented at the KRMCA Winter Meeting.

Josh is a 2011 graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in Civil Engineering. Join us in welcoming him to the Association as you take a minute to read his letter. To register, please fill out the information below and form to Susan Hagg shagg@krmca.org or by fax to NAME: COMPANY: Lunch to be provided by ECS Committee Hello KRMCA Members! I want to take a minute to introduce myself to you as well as thank many of you for the very warm welcome I ve already received. Those of you whom I ve met have been very helpful and encouraging as I learn the ropes here at the KRMCA. A bit about me: I grew up in the tiny town of Hawesville, just a bit east of Owensboro. I ve been married to my wife, Sarah, for 5 years and we ve got two daughters, Caroline (2 1/2 years), and Kate (1 year) plus another little girl, Charlotte who will be arriving in March. I ve got a border collie, Walter, who is my only male ally in a home full of ladies. I have hobbies ranging from guitar to camping to board games, and just about everything in between. Professionally, my path to get to the KRMCA is a bit unconventional. I graduated in 2011 from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Civil Engineering with a focus in Construction. I worked for Messer Construction in Lexington straight out of college as a Project Engineer until I moved to Leitchfield, KY to work at a Christian Camp and Retreat Facility - Loucon - in After a few years at Loucon I started my own business doing Marketing Consultation & Design Services (videography, graphic design, web design, photography) specializing in small business. I ran this business right up until I was hired by the KRMCA in October. I m very excited to join the KRMCA in a position that seems like an almost uncanny fit based on my background and interest in concrete. I ve got a lot to learn, so I hope you can offer some grace and patience as I get my footing. I look forward to meeting all of you in person over the next few months and finding out how best I can serve the members of the Association. If you need anything, be sure to get in touch with me and I ll do my best to help! Josh Huddy Best, Josh Huddy josh@krmca.org

5 ADVANCE READY MIX PUMP- ING 32 STORIES UP Pouring mass concrete for large hotels on Second Street in Louisville is nothing new for Advance Ready Mix. Advance, who is now producing concrete for the massive new Omni Hotel in Louisville, also poured the Downtown concrete frame Marriott just across the street. And oh by the way, Second Street in the foreground is a concrete street promoted to the City of Louisville by the KRM- CA. Constructed over 15 years ago Second Street still looks like new. The Omni project is a $300 million dollar 32 story project that will yet include a 820 space concrete parking garage. The Courier Journal reports that since ground broke in January 16,531 cubic yards of concrete have been placed, enough for a sidewalk 62 miles long. Omni project managers report that a new floor is being added every eight days. Advance Ready Mix is providing a 3, hour mix for the floors and a 7, day mix for the columns. We are told by Atria officials in the Nucleus building, another concrete frame structure a few blocks away from the Omni, near I- 65, that the concrete frame building is quieter and vibrates much less than a steel frame structure Atrial was previously in. The hotel is set to open in early This is another great example of how the World s friendliest building material creates jobs and excitement for many years to come. KRMCA members may also be interested to know that the OMNI Hotel will be the location for the 2019 Winter Convention. We look forward to following this project and being some of the first guests after completion. Above: Prus workers place another lane of the new concrete Roundabout near Newport. Below: A Hilltop Ready Mixed Truck fills the pump truck for the Roundabout operation Ringing in the Roundabout On October 19 (inset) Bud Ruffing rings the world s largest bell to celebrate the States s largest concrete roundabout. Actually, the 66,000 pound bell is a 2 minute walk from the Roundabout, which is a major WELCOME into the Newport on the levee area. The roundabout being built by Prus and Hilltop Ready Mix with Cemex/Kosmos Cement is a rocket boost to the local economic ac vity in Newport. Bud, Tim Knapke Senior Project Manager for Prus Construc on Company, GSP Engineers, Northern Kentucky University staff, Kelly Mayo of Cemex and other industry folks convened at the Southbank Partners office where the World Peace Bell resides to visit the nearby KY 9 Connector/ roundabout. Jack Moreland with Southbank Partners said that they are thrilled with the economic development that this project has already s mulated. Southbank intends to really dress up the inner ring of the larger roundabout to make it a signature entrance to the Newport Waterfront area. We started working on making this a concrete roundabout project way back in March of We had Steve Waalkes of the Michigan Concrete Associa on come down and speak to GSP Engineers and the District 6 KYTC Staff on building roundabout geometrics generally and concrete specifically. The join ng pa ern on a concrete roundabout has to be done correctly. (see join ng layout) Clearly Ready Mix Concrete is ringing in a great project and a great looking, long las ng connec- on with Newport on the Levee to I-275.
