The JATCs are the heart and soul of trade workforce development. This session explores tips and techniques for associations and how our participation is essential on committees and trusts. An actual JATC coordinator will answer questions about best practices on all things apprenticeship. What all execs should know about the role of the Association on Trust Funds The Association and the Exec have an important role on the trust funds with an impact on bargaining. This panel session presents the importance and impacts of the Exec s role on trust funds and describes the obligations of the association. Moderator: Ed Kommers Panelists: Jeff Gaecke and Richard Sawhill A New Spin on UA Recruiting Ideas on how our associations can best support the UA growth initiative efforts at the local level The UA is emphasizing the recruitment of workers beyond apprenticeship. This goes beyond the old fashioned organizing and focuses on marketing to people and non-union firms. This session presents practices on how the association can best participate in this effort and meet the needs of our contractors. Moderator: Ed Kommers Presenters: Tim Brink and David Davia Avoiding Tech Blunders Sketchy practices in technology for the association and how to avoid them Case studies on what works and what doesn t as discovered in recent MCAA ELI technology reviews. 3 2018 AEC Best Practices Conference The Millennial Stampede New approaches to engage the next generation of our member contractor employees with the association This session is designed to encourage brainstorming of ideas. Our contractor members are going through a generation change that will significantly impact the association. Participate in this session to explore how this transition impacts the association s structure, culture, and programs. Format will be idea lightning rounds with chosen table captains. Facilitator: Robin Cowper Bargaining Boot Camp The as-yet-untold and not so secret keys to success Many resources exist to help with basic bargainingwhat are they and how can they best be used? Moderator: Bob Looman Keep Out of Jail Good governance is critical to an association s success. How does your association rank on the multitude of statutory requirements? Steve Lamb hosts a quiz game show! Stayin Alive: Revenue Alternatives An association s alternatives to declining revenues - A case study Many of our associations have seen hours and industry fund revenues decline. This module explores the case study of one non-traditional management model that developed over time to manage multiple construction associations comprised of both industry-fund and non-industry fund groups. In addition to lessons in leveraging the many economies of scale, there are examples of revenue generation and demonstrating value that can be gleaned from experience with dues-funded associations that translate directly to industry-fund associations. Education Session (1:15 p.m. 2:30 p.m.) The Myths and Facts of Strikes Lead by Ed Kommers While an uncommon experience, strikes and work stoppages can be extremely disruptive to morale and industry success. There are many emotions and myths that come into play and it can be difficult for an association exec to sort out the facts and applicable laws and regulations. This facilitated workshop will use some recent actual relevant case studies to promote discussion about potential actions and strategies for the association executive.
