This included awarding of the Peace Medallion, now celebrated in Canadian, American and Mexican YMCAs. Peace Week is held on the third week of November to recognize the achievements of individuals in local communities who, without any special resources, demonstrate in their lives and activities the values expressed in the World Alliance of YMCA s Statement on Peace (1981). Peace has many dimensions. It is not only a state of relationships among nations. We cannot expect to live in a world of peace if we are unable to live in peace with those close to us even those who differ from us. The responsibility for peace begins with each person, in relationship with family and friends, and extends to community life and national activities... Family Friend Program The Family Friend Program provides a parent with a volunteer mentor and monthly workshops that can link single-parent families to appropriate information, resources and personal development opportunities that aid in developing confidence, self-esteem and becoming more financially empowered which helps give children a better quality of life. There is more fun and joy through the recognition that a single parent family is, and can be, a healthy family. For more information, please contact Sandra Romo, Family Friend Coordinator at or familyfriend@ymcafredericton.org Connect to Community-Change Lives The Community Closet An initiative of the YMCA of Fredericton s Global & Community Development. The Y is dedicated to building healthy communities - and peace is fundamental to strong, happy and healthy communities. It has since become one of the most popular stores in downtown Fredericton. Cultures is a fair trade gift boutique. It seeks to make a difference in the lives of the artisans it buys from by ensuring they are paid fairly within the terms of their local economies and that labour conditions are safe and non-exploitative, adhering to International Labor Organization guidelines. The purchases by Cultures are also guided by the principle that the raw materials used to make the items sold are harvested in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner. The store has become a visible representation of YMCA values through its efforts at building better futures in Fredericton and around the world. It has helped community members understand how consumer choices can make a real and positive difference in people s lives. Cultures was also the driving force behind the creation of the YMCA of Fredericton s No Sweat purchasing guidelines. Cultures is located on Mazzuca s Lane off York Street.
