1 HEALTHY CHILDREN ARE PREPARED TO LEARN PK-6 th Liberty Hill Elementary, Burden Elementary, & Intermediate School School Year HEALTH EDUCATION ALL CAMPUSES K-6: LHES: BURDEN: School Nurse, Health class teacher (LHES only), PE teacher, and classroom teachers collaborate to cover the TEKS for PK -6. Yearly programs for all of the children teach Health Education to all grade levels such as Local Fireman clown show, Ventriloquist with Character Education program, Drama group that highlights health and nutrition. Counselor and Health class teacher instruct all of the Six Pillars of Character, Citizenship, Fairness, Trustworthiness, Caring, Responsibility, and Respect. Awards are given throughout the year by classroom teachers to students who demonstrate these traits and they are recognized in school assembly. Teachers use the Bienstar Health Program Curriculum exercises to emphasize daily nutrition and promote physical health and healthy habits. Counselor and Health class teacher teach all of the Six Pillars of Health Character, Citizenship, Fairness, Trustworthiness, Caring, Responsibility, and Respect. Awards are given throughout the year by classroom teachers to students who demonstrate these traits, and they are recognized in school assembly.

2 INTERMEDIATE: Character Traits are recognized by school principal and home room teachers weekly at morning assemblies on every Monday. Fifth grade uses the Health & Wellness Curriculum to cover the TEKS. 6 th Grade uses the Healthy & Wise Curriculum and will also include Worth the Wait Curriculum this year. HEALTHY AND SAFE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT ALL CAMPUSES K-6: LHES: Parents and visitors must check in at the office with valid ID to promote safe atmosphere. Maintenance Personnel are on duty before, during and after school to provide a clean, safe, physical environment for students as well as being on call to clean up spills or other things. Extra care is taken during flu and cold season to sanitize desks and other common surfaces. PE Staff, Nurse and many other faculty/staff members are certified in CPR. There is an AED in the building should it become necessary and all staff are trained in its use. All teachers are aware of Fire Safety standards in the building and comply with rules in posting pictures and storing teachers supplies. Fire drills are executed monthly, as well as disaster, tornado drills, and lockdown on a regular basis. All Staff are trained in knowledge of blood-borne pathogens. Red Ribbon Week is held each year at every campus to promote saying no to drugs. All students watch a bus evacuation video and practice evacuating a bus. Playground is gated all the way around and monitored regularly for safe equipment and practices.

COUNSELING AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ALL CAMPUSES K-6: BURDEN: Counselor provides crisis counseling, such as when young students miss their parents or have home difficulties, or larger issues as they may arise. Counselor deals with behavioral issues, hopefully before a child gets into trouble, offering behavioral alternatives to poor behavior. Counselor works with other staff/faculty members in RTI meetings to create and /or implement behavior plans. Counselor instructs and has a reward program for positive character respect, responsibility, caring, etc. Counselor meets with teachers and/or parents for as needed counseling. Parenting classes are offered 1-2 times per year. School groups are arranged by counselor and available for students, such as divorce and friendship. School Counselor uses the Second Step Curriculum in the classroom which is a bullying prevention program. INTERMEDIATE: Counselor holds small group sessions over topics such as divorce, grief, and organizational skills. 4 PARENT AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT ALL CAMPUSES K-6: Parenting Classes given by Counselor. Family Night involves Parents in activities with children and teachers. Nurse contacts parents regularly for absences and any other health needs they might have. Many volunteers are enlisted to help with day-to-day activities and a luncheon is given in their honor in the spring. Many events that involve the parents throughout the year are planned, such as the Kindergarten Rodeo, Field Day, Jingle Bell Run, Turkey Trot, Family Night at Texas Star Hockey games, Skating 101, that bring parents, community, staff and students together. Parent Teacher Conferences happen on scheduled and as-needed basis. Nurse arranges donations with organizations such as the Masons to provide necessities like toothbrushes to teach hygiene to the students. Forms for community opportunities (such as sports, camps, boys and girl scouts, etc.) are distributed through and encouraged by the schools. STAFF WELLNESS PROMOTION ALL CAMPUSES K-6 All Staff are offered flu immunizations each year for free. Various classes after school are offered for staff to participate should they wish to, such as Boot Camp or other exercise classes. A yearly Biggest Loser contest is held each hear to help the staff be healthy. A walking/jogging trail was developed at the Intermediate School to encourage students, parents, faculty, staff and community to encourage good health through walking or jogging. Nurse counsels with staff as needed about health issues.

5 HEALTH SERVICES ALL CAMPUSES K-6 BURDEN Each campus has a full time nurse. School Nurses educate individuals in health and hygiene as they visit her individually, and in the classrooms on subjects such as personal hygiene, germs, etc. School Nurses do yearly vision and hearing checks, as well as height and weight measurements on all students. Nurses also take BP checks, scoliosis, acanthosis nigrican checks on all students. Immunizations are required and checked regularly. School Nurses do referrals for families in need such as eyeglasses, for those who cannot afford them, etc. School Nurses assist with school immunization clinics. PE teachers measure, evaluate and provide feedback and parents regarding student fitness levels using the Fitnessgram. INTERMEDIATE Intermediate PE teachers measure, evaluate and provide feedback to students and parents regarding student fitness levels using the Fitnessgram and a pre & post test using the President s Challenge to measurement improvement during the school year. Selected students are chosen to be involved in a mentoring program with volunteer high school students. PHYSICAL EDUCATION ALL CAMPUSES K-6 PE teachers provide 45 minutes of PE EVERY day to all students. Weather permitting, students have recess EVERY day.

6 LHES Yearly PE events are held at all campuses such as Field Day, Jingle Bell Run, Turkey Trot, Hoops for Heart, Diabetes Walk, Panther Club (run at H.S. football home games), Panther Shuffle dance at H.S. basketball games. All K-6 students run a marathon every year through the course of the year. A Music and Movement class is taught every day to all PK NUTRITION SERVICES ALL CAMPUSES K-6 LHES A balanced meal is provided daily at breakfast and lunch; many healthy choices are offered, following Federal and State Guidelines. Menus are sent home monthly containing nutritional information, as well as a website where this information can be accessed. Cafeteria follows the Square Meals Program through the Department of Agriculture Food and Safety Division. Children bring a healthy snack from home to enjoy every day at snack time. A culinary contest is held annually.
