4 16. OPEN HOUSE: Monday, September 10, 7:00 p.m. This year Unity s Open House will begin with a presentation, Faith, Culture, and High School: Spiritual Growth at Unity! by Principal Jerry DeGroot and Director of Spiritual Life and Leadership Dan Landstra. This presentation will allow parents an up-close look at the world of a high school student at Unity, to better understand the most pressing issues they confront, to discover how these issues play a role in their personal and spiritual growth, and how Unity intentionally engages each student to encourage spiritual growth in all areas of life. Resources for engaging their students will also be provided for parents. After the presentation, parents will meet with their student s teachers in the following three classes: 1 st, 4 th, and 8 th periods. All Careerline Technical Center student parents will meet with the Dean of Students Scott Soodsma during 8 th period in the counseling center, Rm This is a special evening for parents! We ask all our parents to attend this important evening to learn more about Unity and how together we help our young people grow and develop. We hope to see you on Monday, September 10, at 7:00 p.m. 17. SCHOOL CLOTHING/DRESS CODE: The Unity dress code identifies wear that we have determined is appropriate and not appropriate for student schoolwork. Schoolwork includes getting in and out of desks, working at lab tables, walking upstairs, standing, sitting, etc. Schoolwork is to be carried out without having clothing (lack of clothing or writing on clothing) be distracting, inappropriate, or restricting. Unity reserves the right to change its dress code as cultural styles change to ensure appropriate clothing for school. The administration s decision as to what is appropriate or not appropriate for school and school work is final. Clothing, jewelry, and personal grooming must not be distracting, disruptive, restricting, suggestive, offensive, or denigrating. Shirts and tops for girls may be sleeveless if straps are 3 inches in width from neckline to the sleeve edge. Off the shoulder shirts and open back shirts are not allowed. Sheer tops may be worn if they have a shirt with a three-inch strap underneath. Boys must wear shirts with sleeves. Skirts and dresses must extend to mid-thigh and you must wear leggings or spandex underneath. (School is not the place for short dresses and skirts without leggings or spandex. Going in and out of desks, walking up stairs to the 2 nd floor, and other school activities make dresses and skirts without leggings or spandex inappropriate.) No bare midriffs while standing or walking. No cleavage while standing, walking, or sitting. No underwear showing. No offensive or suggestive words, pictures, etc. on clothing - shirts, coats, pants, etc. No advertisement of tobacco, alcohol, drugs, or music groups on clothing. No ripped or torn clothing in trunk area that reveals skin or undergarments or underwear. No hats worn in school 4

5 18. TEXTBOOK POLICY & PROCEDURES: Students will receive their textbooks during the first week of class. Books will be collected at the end of the semester or at year end. Each student will be provided a book that is numbered and will need to put their name in the book assigned to them. Students are responsible for the care and upkeep of their book and must return the book that was originally given to them. Parents, we ask for your assistance in helping your student provide the necessary care for their textbook. Fines: Lost/Unusable Book: Students/Parents will be charged the replacement value of the book. Severely Damaged Book: Students/Parents will be charged 50% of the replacement value of the book. *Books will be assessed at the end of the semester or school year. All fines must be received prior to a student taking their finals or able to receive their senior packet. 19. UNITY STUDENT ACTIVITIES: The following is an initial listing of the co-curricular activities available to Unity students. Additional activities may be added throughout the year. Musical Tryouts will be held the third week of school. Cast members should have both dramatic and musical ability. Committee members for props, makeup, etc. are needed. Ashton Foreman is the director. Play Tryouts will be held in December. Students are needed for the cast, as well as for the many committees props, makeup, stage, etc. Dan Sanders is the director of the play. Student Council Unity s Student Council is active in building community and promoting school spirit. The senior/junior/sophomore officers were selected in the spring. In September, freshmen will be given opportunity to apply for Student Council membership, and selections will then be made. Mark TeSlaa and Chris Achterhof are Student Council advisors. Class Officers Class officers lead their class and plan activities. Senior/junior/sophomore class officers were selected in the spring. Freshmen will be given opportunity to apply for class officer positions and will be selected during the fall. Service Projects Throughout the school year, Unity s students take on numerous service projects. Service projects have included patterning for a special child; providing Thanksgiving and Christmas gifts, food, and programs for the people at Adams Park Apartments, a low-income elderly housing program in Grand Rapids; providing after-school tutoring and play activities in the Grand Rapids Public Schools; and helping at the school s resale store, Revive. Scott Soodsma, Dean of Students, coordinates all service opportunities. Science Olympiad This is held in late winter with interscholastic competition at Grand Valley State University in March. Interested students design and build projects that apply scientific concepts in a variety of ways. Brian Mast, the Science Olympiad coach, is assisted by Unity s science teachers. Math Competition Interested students use math to develop solutions to realistic problems. Math competitions with other schools occur during the year, sponsored by Unity math teachers. Art Club The Art Club meets after school, usually one day a week, in the Art Room. It is sponsored by Unity s Art teacher, Julie Thrower. All students are welcome to come and experiment with a variety of art materials. Musical Groups The bands, choirs, and orchestra provide many opportunities throughout the year for students to join Pep Band and to form ensemble groups. Brian Knot (band), Sara Jager (orchestra), and Ashton Foreman (choir) share these opportunities with students during the year. Groups form throughout the year in response to student interest and people available to sponsor the groups. Information for these activities is always provided in the Student Bulletin, which is made available to view on the TVs in the common areas and posted on Unity s website. 5

6 20. ATTENTION: STUDENTS INTERESTED IN THE FALL MUSICAL: The musical for fall 2018 is the historic and high energy family show Newsies. This powerful show takes place during the labor strikes of It will be performed November 29, 30 and December 1 at Hudsonville High School Fine Arts Auditorium. Auditions for Newsies are open to any Unity student. Auditions will be September 4-6 and include singing, reading, and dancing auditions. All audition materials will be available in the choir room on the first day of school. Sign-up sheets for audition times will also be in the choir room, ready to sign the first day/week of school. There will be three separate auditions. Tuesday is singing auditions, Tuesday evening is dance auditions, Wednesday is reading auditions, and Thursday is callbacks. Please reserve these days on your schedule to avoid conflicts. Anyone auditioning must sign-up for all three auditions. Rehearsal days and times will be available after auditions but will mostly be on Monday through Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. Please note, we can accommodate most sport schedules if your student would like to participate in a fall sport and musical. This show is a beautiful and fun production requiring people on and off stage. We are looking for cast members, crew, construction, painters, make-up artists, props people, as well as adult volunteers. The pit will be made up of as many Unity students as possible, with some professionals from Grand Valley State University. We are especially looking for adults who are willing to help with set construction, costumes, and supervising painters. There will also be opportunities to be involved with food, props, and in other ways as well. These are fun committees and you do not need a student in the cast to be involved. If you would like to be involved in any way, please contact the school as soon as possible. Your support is truly appreciated. Freshmen, this is a great way for you to get involved immediately and get to know kids in different classes. If you have any questions about the production or the auditions, or are interested in being involved, please contact Mrs. Foreman. 21.
